Transphobia was a type of stand in for homophobia for years when homophobia became wrong. Simpsons series 10 has a bit about a saving money guru economising by the dolly birds on his yacht being cheaper because they used to be men.

And everyone watching at the time (1999/2000) was probably like "yeah that's fine". I'm not sure when transphobia started to be politically incorrect for more general audiences but I'm thinking around 2005-2010 maybe? Some comedy shows took even longer.

His reasoning behind being homophobic is idiotic though.

The rationale for him stopping being homophobic is a bit depressing because it took his life being saved by a gay person. And it's just not a practical method of irradicating homophobia at scale. A bitter sweet denouement.

In that episode its not out if character at all. NASA are looking for the most regular tv-obsessed guy to use in their space programme. The space transport system is totally fictional but actually fairly plausible-looking.

Unless you mean the season twenty whatever where a rocket takes them to Kang and Kodos's planet in which case take thyself to the journey through shit thread.

IIRC there wasn't a ton of "getting in shape", just standard astronaut training stuff. Barney was the ultimate winner because they made him quit drinking.

Deep Space Homer is quite a bit like Homer's Phobia in that it's clearly written around a very simple publicity-grabbing pitch: "WHAT IF HOMER GOES INTO SPACE>???", and A Very Special Episode about homophobia.

The thing is the former earns it by writing a good story around it (Motivation of Homer being beaten by an inanimate carbon rod, opportunity coming along by sheer chance, Homer proves himself, then a bathetic and subversive conclusion of how he ends up overshadowed by a carbon rod again).

Homer's Phobia just has him being an obnoxious cunt to a gay man purely because he's gay, even more so when he thinks hes making his son act a bit camp, then grudgingly admitting gay people are okay because of a robot santa proving very convenient in resolving a heavily contrived situation with some reindeer. Congrats, prejudice against homosexuals is solved forever, here is your Emmy.

In a season with increasingly outlandish plots, Deep Space Homer really stands out for having the daftest premise, and not one but two cartoon physics visuals with Homer's face distorting into Popeye and Nixon. A definite shark-jumping moment after four years and almost 100 episodes.

Except it's fucking great and it doesn't matter.

Deep Space Homer is worth every single second of outlandish plot for Kent Brockman's insect overlords bit. One of the finest pieces of comedy ever.

IIRC there wasn't a ton of "getting in shape", just standard astronaut training stuff.

No there was DVD extras including 22 minutes of previously unseen footage of Homer training for the space mission. Calistenics, resistance training, weights and an extensive aerobics programme. Also included is a interview featurette where Homer confirms that he is not enjoying the training, does not feel it suits his character and that he cannot wait to get to space just so that he can come home again.

It's not the funniest moment, but the scene in The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show where the kids test group demands a realistic, down-to-earth show that's completely off the wall and swarming with magic robots basically invented the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So probably one for the Shit Simpsons thread come to think of it

Came across this on my ongoing Conan discovery odyssey. I wasn't sure about the self-congratulatory inside baseball at first but it turns out to be very warm, witty and collegial. A nice podcast-like chat by the writers of early The Simpsons.

This is why I always preferred The Simpsons to Family Guy. Family Guy always explains jokes in those cutaways, which are hardly ever funny. I think it's much funnier to not show these things.
