As with all these AI thingies, I wonder how much of it is mechanical turk, ie the script is written by a human but read by an AI voice.

In any case, put me on the side of 'AI is an interesting tool but FFS can we at least get people to start checking with the estates of dead people before we bring them back to life'

AI art can go and fucking fuck itself, in its arse, cunt and face. it is death. happy to be a luddite on this matter.

Call me a luddite too cos that's nail on head for me.

I'd argue a spunking cock graffitied on a wall has more creativity to it than the soulless hackery of regurgitated AI content. But in fairness I do paint a mean spunking cock.

Bit of a thread tangent but off the back of the Midjourney lawsuit, I heard about Glaze. It's software designed to combat AI theft by digitally cloaking the image in a way that the human eye doesn't even perceive it, but it bamboozles AI. Gave me a bit of a cheer, even if only to find out there is a potential way for artists to protect themselves: https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/what-is-glaze.html

from the bit I watched it def all sounds like chat gpt, lists injected with tropes. But it could be prompted by stuff like "do a stand up bit in the style of George Carlin about buying a gun in Japan versus buying a gun in America" and "... how God is an asshole" then stitched together.

I'm pretty certain that the script is entirely written by a human, or at least heavily prompted. Not only does it seem 'too good' to be the work of machine, but the central joke and premise of the Dudesy Podcast is that's 'completely run' by an 'AI'. It's a successful publicity stunt.

Carlin strikes me as a particular terrible "brand" to try this on since all the characteristic things about his performance related to his tone, rhythm and intonation. this is doesnt particularly sound like George to me, even stumbling 00s era George.

its completely uncanny because the sound of the voice is him but the way its speaking is not, so it ends up sounding even less like him than a pre-AI digitalised voice would.

i would if you could get it to mimick his rhythm and flow if you trained it on hours and hours of bootlegs. could you train an AI do speed up and slow down seemingly arbitrarily like George Carlin did, or pause at abrupt points in the bits to raise tense? it seems like a big ask. like asking an AI Stewart Lee to repeat a line the perfect number of times to feel like a Stewart Lee bit

in games there's a huge gap between "make me procedural DOOM style levels that that i can play and feel logical as i'm playing them" and "make me specifically a map from DOOM that would make aficonados think John Romero made it" - i think there's gonna be a similar thing in AI.

"i'm glad i'm dead" as a title for an AI George Carlin special would be an OK joke in the Simpsons or Futurama

like trump being president. decent not hilarious.

I've quite possibly got this wrong, but none of the 'material' is AI generated here, is it?  It's some twat writing a ropey hour of comedy and then using his vocal impression of Carlin to train an AI thing to ultimately deliver it.  The AI isn't generating the content, just the delivery.

So why give a fuck, then?  I was never convinced that Les Dennis was actually Mavis off Coronation Street.

Agreed. Soulless.
AI porn, on the other hand...

Looking into it the dudesy podcast is presented as fully AI but there's a certain amount of playing along with kayfabe by its dreadfully unfunny fans.

That said all of the images are clearly dall-e crap and I cant see how the routines arent also written with AI assistance. It still will have taken a fair bit of work to edit it all together, run the lipsync ai on bits, etc. Its not like a robot just dropped an hour-long set with the press of a button.

Its just padding out for the most part. And that's the problem. It understands the broad structure of a joke but not the asides and flair that make a good performance. Much like the ugly pictures, they seem a bit weird at a glance and then give themselves away in the details.

Why? ChatGPT effortlessly handles requests such as "write x in the style of y".

You hedged yourself and said "at least heavily prompted". Well, if I came up with a list of 12 such prompts, and then fed the results into the AI Carlin impersonator, then uploaded it, then wouldn't you be able to say that the performance was "written by AI" regardless?

I agree that it's good. As good at writing George Carlin jokes as George Carlin was. I find it funny that the responses here are so emotional: either it's offensive, it's threatening, or it's a scam. So far no one has congratulated the technology for its amazing achievement: the jokes are structurally sound, well-paced and are faithful to the style of the stipulated comedian. If you were a new standup you might take scripts like the above and use them as a way of training your delivery - unburdening yourself of the observational side of things. Is it not a technology to be grateful for?

theyre shit, it's not funny in slightest, it is shit. interesting, but still shit.

What's the old joke about being able to play stairway to heaven when your 16, page couldn't play it till he was 20?

Not for people who are losing their jobs to it.

what would be the point of that. there's as much point in congratulating the technology as there is attempting to derive artistic meaning from it

They won't be grateful for it, but there are as many people benefiting from it who should be.

It deserves a pat on the back and credit for its achievements, just as a human would.

This is the way I feel.

To AI Carlin himself- it's like an impression. I guess if you're related to him or his biggest fanTM you might be offended, maybe it'd be polite to give the family the first notice but what can you do?

But do we need Carlin alive- I think it's more an issue. From a tech standpoint it seems like a good impression but socially/artistically are the current comedians just that bad?

Have to say, that much as when you ask chatgpt to write in the style of Dostoevsky and it writes a paragraph in the style of a pretty generic airport novel, these jokes don't really seem much like Carlin, they just resemble generic American stand up comedy
