Call for Twitter to ban racist words

MP Luciana Berger has called for Twitter to block racist words in tweets after experiencing a number of anti-Semetic tweets: "2,500 hate messages in the space of three days" she says, which is pretty shocking/

Should Twitter censor messages with racist words? And if so, why not censor sexist, homophobic, abelist and other words that are used by bigots?

Also, what happens if someone is tweeting and quoting a racist comment someone else made, for example someone on an antifascist march quoting fascists there?

Not sure how Twitter would censor racist words either - perhaps instead it needs to be more proactive when closing/penalising accounts using hate speech.

Only elitist sneering 'snobs' dislike racism, you know.  Nige said so...

if you censor words then other words just take their place, so yeah its not very nice to say those things, but it does seem a bit pointless banning particular words.

What kind of words could be used to replace them? I would suggest cricketing terminology, which isn't doing anything useful at the moment.

Yeah I've a feeling that'll be one of the ones we're struggling to replace.

What if I'm writing a tweet about Barnes Wallace's dog?
What if I'm writing a tweet about Patrick McReary's (GTA4) nickname?
What if I'm writing a tweet about a small bit of damage in a suit of armour?
What if I'm writing a tweet about late 60s German drum-heavy rock?
What if I'm writing a tweet where I have to abbreviate Water-Oil-Gas?

WHAT THEN?

Banning the words doesn't really change the attitudes of people who would use them. It's useful when somebody calls somebody else a kike, because you then know the nature of that person and can avoid them. By banning that, you end up with secret racists who now hate you even more for exercising control over them.

Can't individual clients handle this for any given user?

BPFHAY

I think people just want the victory of getting some people told off.

Fucking daft idea it'll just make people be more inventive with their racism, the words 'chucker' and 'spear' are not inherently racist are they? Wharrabout them eh?

Big Jack McBastard

Ok so anti-semitic terms were the things that caused this shitfit, yes?

What about calling someone a 'Jew cunt'? Again neither word has a racist intent on its tod.

Much like nature, rãçìšm wîll fïñd ä wâý, ÿòü fìlthÿ špïç.
