Title: Billionaire Mail owner buys i
Post by: Fambo Number Mive on November 29, 2019, 02:14:13 PM
Quote
The owner of the Daily Mail, DMGT, has bought the i newspaper and website for £49.6m from JPI Media.

DMGT chairman Lord Rothermere said the paper was "a highly respected publication with a loyal and engaged readership".

"We are committed to. preserving its distinctive, high-quality and politically independent editorial style."

The Competition and Markets Authority will have to approve the deal...

If the DMGT deal is approved, the UK's national newspapers will be owned by just six companies.

DMGT already owns the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and Metro.

Reach, formerly known as Trinity Mirror, owns the Daily Mirror, Sunday People, Daily Express, Daily Star and associated Sunday titles.

News UK, which is part of Rupert Murdoch's media empire, News Corp, owns the Times, Sunday Times and Sun.

The Telegraph Media Group, owned by billionaire brothers Sir Fredrick and Sir David Barclay, owns the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.

The Guardian Media Group owns the Guardian and Observer.

And the Financial Times is owned by Japanese media firm Nikkei, after being sold by UK publishing group Pearson in 2015.

Glad Corbyn is raising the issue of media ownership. At least eight of our newspapers are owned by billonaires, yet most people are unaware of this and don't consider why they attack the leader of a party which wants to make society more equal.

I went from The Mirror to the i as it was summat like 20p when it was launched but it's triple that now and will probably go up, so basically we're all fucked

Well this seems an interesting topic, I wonder what it's about and maybe this time it's-

Glad Corbyn is raising the issue

Oh, I see. You baited me in with an innocuous title, but it turns out to be another Corbyn thread. Let's all sit down for 'a little bit of politics'.

Okay, I know it's a politically heated moment in time, and we are supposed to take a side. It's just that, for me, personally, I have no faith in politicians of any stripe. I think they're a bunch of dirty recidivist sleazebags. And I know I'm right.

I don't see how a thread on newspapers and newspaper ownership can avoid politics. This isn't a Corbyn thread but I thought a comment on Corbyn and newspaper.ownership was reasonable.

Perhaps it's time to subscribe to Novara, who have just recently made a video about media ownership. What that BBC article fails to mention in its figures is that 60% of newspapers are owned by two companies and 83% are owned by three:

Yeah it's reasonable, it's fair enough.

I hope Corbyn does win the election, so that I don't have to keep hearing about him every day. My mum's boyfriend is a Labour man, and he likes to pontificate about how we should all vote for Corbyn. I come onto this website for a bit escapism and... everyone's talking about Corbyn.

If Corbyn does win the election you'll probably hear more about him!

If he loses he'll probably step down and the newspapers will have to find something else to focus on.

Don't get me wrong, I would like to see Boris deposed. He's an embarrassment to the UK.

I just don't think I want Corbyn to replace him. I'm gonna vote for the Green party instead. Screw you, Corbynites!

The best way to depose Johnson is to vote Labour.

Labour have a lot to answer for. The Blair years scunnered me on Labour.

I'd prefer to vote Green. And people will say, 'That's a wasted vote.' But I don't believe there's any such thing as a wasted vote. If you have made your opinion known, then your vote was a success.

I was not a fan of New Labour, but Corbyn, McDonnell and Abbott were opposed to Iraq, opposed to PFI and opposed to Labour being like the Tories. Labour now is completly different from New Labour. If it wasn't, I wouldn't be a Labour member and supporter.

Sadly, I can't find the article where Blair very helpfully stated that Labour is no longer the party he led. You'll have to take my word for it if you can't find it yourself.

And what do you think will happen when Corbyn gets into power? Do you think he'll stand up to Trump? I doubt it. He'll probably let daddy Donny take him by the hand and dance him down the pathway.

No, I just think your views have been totally distorted by the diet of bullshit you've been consuming. Your sarcastic 'worship at the altar of Jeremy Corbyn' says an awful lot.

I was referring back to that time when Bush took Blair by the hand and walked him along like a little boy.

See my comment above about Blair. If you haven't noticed that the party has significantly changed under Corbyn, I don't know what more we can do to get your attention.

It is bloody important to people for whom Johnson getting elected would be an utter catastrophe. Which is anyone who isn't comfortably off.

Rest assured, Corbyn won't be holding hands with Trump. He'd get the boot. Too many activists have given their spare time for free to Labour for this election and hundreds of thousands of members have given as much money as they can afford (political funding being another massive difference between Corbyn and Blair).

I tend to buy it on a Saturday and occasionally in the week. Partly because of the excellent puzzle section but generally it's very good so bit gutted that it now presents a moral dilemma.

Interestingly there's a Q and A in it today about this which, to paraphrase says our new evil overlords won't be doing anything to change the paper, they bought it because it's successful as it is and please keep buying us because we won't turn into the Daily Mail.

I work for the company from whom the the i was bought, our office in Sheffield didn't have much to do with the paper but we occasionally covered things when people from the London office were unavailable. Reach were originally interested in the i but they pulled out. The email we received to tell us the news mentioned that nothing would change staff-wise and it would be business as usual - for now.

We were hanging on by a thread before the sale so now we're just quietly waiting for the rest of our titles to be sold off, dissolved, consolidated or combinations of these.

There are several of our local titles which may be of some value to other companies but a lot of them are piddly little community things that not many people would miss. In the past few years many of the reporters were made redundant, local offices closed and centralised hubs were created instead - this had the effect of cheapening the titles which all ended up as identically templated and full of content ripped from social media and generic filler to pad things out.

Why on earth would you bring up something so random and irrelevant?

Honestly, if, when faced with Boris Johnson on the one hand and Jeremy Corbyn one the other, you go cross-eyed and think “these parties and their respective policies are IDENTICAL” then what are you expecting anyone here to say in response?  Do you want to learn more about the differences between the Tories and Labour or do you want to maintain the same “Aah but do you see: Tony Blair” position indefinitely?

It's not irrelevant, it's a fact of their recent history. Surely you can see how it might make a person cynical towards them.

Damn, my favourite crossword. Hopefully will still be able to download it free online.

As you probably know, the i cryptic crosswords aren't originals - they're reprinted crosswords from The Independent four years ago. It would be nice if the new owner could fund some new puzzles, especially as I guess they may be exhausted before long, the i and Independent now being under separate ownership.

The Independent still has a free online puzzle section, including 7 new cryptic crosswords a week from many of the same setters https://puzzles.independent.co.uk .

It's quite annoying how I've put i instead of i, isn't it?  I didn't think it would be.

Over fifteen years ago is not recent history, especially not in modern politics. If you have to explain a reference you were making as a pithy rejoinder you should never have made it in the first shitting place. Fuck off, cunt.
