got some spam with blank subject lines from people like '::Boots_Dept' and '::Screwfix_DPT' - who on Earth is going to think these are in any way convincing?

They are designed to weed out intelligent/aware readers so only the most easily tricked can be targeted the most. I think the two you quoted look legit enough though, send me the links please.
