The Mollusk

Lmao if Willan was a bloke this would have barely even been considered let alone discussed and researched

FWIW, I'm constantly amazed that Dara O'Briain is only five years older than me. And once you've done a family tree, looking up genealogy records is more of a reflex than a conscious act. :)

One of the main uses of the internet while watching tv in our house is looking up the ages of various people. I would hazard a guess that it's about 60:40 female to male celebs, and I'd say the main reason we are moved to look them up is to see if they're older or younger than us (a man and a woman in our 50s), often with the result that we will feel happier about how old we look.

DrGreggles

Geri Halliwell used to be a few years older than me.
Now we're the same age.
Soon she'll be younger.

SHE MUST BE STOPPED!

Quote from: Brian Dunklefun on April 02, 2024, 06:25:30 PMSophie Willan Wikipedia has her down as 37 born in 1987. How laughable.

All I'm saying is this is a sexist comment and regardless of how well-meaning the replies afterwards were they still fall under that same ugly umbrella.

I'm not disagreeing with you, fwiw, whether you want to call it sexist, or just plain rude/unnecessary.

Love the phrase 'ugly umbrella' and will endeavour to use it to refer to the metaphorical object under which less pulchritudinous individuals were born

Anyway - I enjoyed the first episode. The only one I knew from before was Steve Pemberton (I've usually heard of at least three, I guess, but it never usually matters).

It's funny that Steve and John are both such obvious students of the show (checking around for clues, etc) and quite (over?) competitive.

They're rerunning the Baddiel series on E4 at the moment, and the contrast between him and Pemberton (if you want to bracket them together in the cast as 'The Older Men') is stark.

frajer

Enjoyed it too, particularly Pemberton - in a Rodney Bewes tuxedo T-shirt, no less!

Nothing gut-bustingly funny I thought but then I find the newer decent series takes an episode or two to bed in before they start to soar. Promising stuff and lovely to have it to look forward to each week.

It really can't be said enough what an incredibly thick cunt Baddiel is. How the guy that didn't know you could lick a lolly rather than smell it to find out its flavour, has managed to position himself as a public 'intellectual' is mind boggling.

Baddiel remains the worst contestant they've ever had (outside of the one off new year specials) and his chickpea task the worst task anyone has ever done.

The Mollusk

Pemberton's sexy drawing at the end of the final task should have won.

Sorry if its sexist, I was genuinely shocked when I googled her that that was her age.

For balance and to be an equal opportunist arsehole I just googled other contests ages and I am slightly surprised Steve Pemberton is 56 I would have put him at above 60.

neveragain

Pemberton fans may like to know the run of this series will take us up to the start of the new series of Inside No. 9 (it being scheduled to begin in May, and Taskmaster ending the last week of same.)

No worries man, just felt unpleasant, picking apart a woman's age as if she's being deceptive or something. There's a few reasons why it doesn't come across well when it's a middle (ish) aged woman being singled out on a public forum. But anyway, that's probably enough chat about it. Peace be with you.

Fingers crossed for a crossover.

Do a lot of extremely 'intellectual' people present as 'it seems a miracle that they are physically capable of dressing themselves' - it used to be a trope...

Thinking of Paul Sinha who had similar problems, but was never less than hugely funny on TM.

When Luke Littler came to prominence it was all about his playing ability and not mocking his looks compared to his age at all iirc.

For Willan she just has the hair of an older woman which skews first impressions.

Minami Minegishi

Baddiel was very briefly brought up on the recent Off Menu pod with Katy Wix. I might be over-interpreting/doing a confirmation bias but it didn't sound warm.

Tiggles

Pemberton is such a clever clogs, in the best way possible. Peak Taskmaster.

The crawlybumlick thing in the prize task got shut down pretty quickly though, reminiscent of Herring's arguments getting edited down and eventually denied as the series went on. Be interesting to see how Pemberton continues.

I'm sure there was some Pemberton Twitter/inside Number 9 tie-in that people flagged up when they were filming either the location or the studio stuff, can't remember any details of it though.

edit - ah it was a crossword he'd set in a newspaper, I'll not post anything here as it'll likely appear in a future episode.

Tiggles

It's quite funny, and I generally like the Taskmaster games that feel like a parlour game, but this feels like something they should have saved for next year's TM Christmas crackers.

Really wish they'd stop playing little bits of the tasks three times over. It's not fucking TikTok.

You can just bring in things that you, and everyone else in the world, have seen on the internet now then?

Very much enjoyed Sophie's "Flying Tudor Queen", and presumably John's back injury.

Not a 5-pointer though.

Is Pemberton too smart to win? Where will he come a cropper, do we reckon? Being marked down for smugness might be the others' only hope

I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it.
