George Oscar Bluth II

Although tonight's was hosted by Tony Blackburn so is still on the schedule. Hurrah.

QuoteTony Blackburn looks at the weekly pop chart from 1977 and introduces
Spoiler alert
Hudson Ford, Elvis Costello, Joe Dolan, David Essex, Steve Gibbons Band, Elkie Brooks, the Dooleys, Nazareth, Yvonne Elliman, the Jacksons, Mink de Ville, Candi Staton

and a Legs & Co dance sequence.

Ooh - the spokesman said 'postpone' the showings - that's a bit more promising, isn't it?

Maybe there's a glimmer of a hope they'll show them when it's all calmed down a bit.

Edit:
Looking at it again I think they're talking about the show in general being postponed, rather than just the Savile episodes. Curses!

Who thought that yellow toy microphone was a good idea? A slimline one like 'old matey' from Spandau Ballet is required here, surely.
Tony appears to say "That's dreadful isn't it" at the end of this one. He can't REALLY have said that, can he? (Though to be fair, it WAS dreadful)

Those dancing girls really are awful, I hate them and their 'sexy' dancing.
Are they always Legs and Co or are there different ones each week.
The interpretation of paperback writer was surely the lowest point, just mincing about with a paperback book (do you see) in each outstretched arm. And the one with the dog that had to get down.
At least Kate Bush could sing as well as do awful dancing.

Dead kate moss

Pan's People til the mid 70s, then Ruby Flipper for a couple of years, then Legs & Co for ages. All choreographed by the legendary literalist Flick Colby. Hot Gossip over on Kenny Everett blew them all out of the water. But they all did super-work.

daf

Oddly, the Paperback writer routine (done by Pan's People, incidentally) is one of my favourites.

Pan's People (1968 - 1976)
The Classic line-up :

Louise Clarke
Flick Colby
Babs Lord
Ruth Pearson
Andrea "Andi" Rutherford
Patricia "Dee Dee" Wilde

The last line up in 1976 consisted of :
Mary Corpe
Cherry Gillespie
Sue Menhenick
Lee Ward
Ruth Pearson (the only remaining original member)

Ruby Flipper line-up (March-October 1976) :
Lulu Cartwright
Cherry Gillespie
Phillip Haigh (sometimes credited as Phillip Steggles)
Patti Hammond
Sue Menhenick
Floyd Pearce
Gavin Trace

Legs & Co line up (Oct 1976 - Oct 1981) :
Lulu Cartwright
Gill Clarke
Patti Hammond
Rosie Hetherington
Sue Menhenick
Pauline Peters

My favourite Ruby Flipper routine was this mashup of 'Tubular Bells' and Donna Summer's 'Love to Love You Baby' in the Blue Peter Garden -
The Champs Boys Orchestra (08 July 1976) :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjClsqCfF7I

This is what we'd be getting today if it hadn't been wiped[nb]and 'the sky at night' wasn't on, of course[/nb]

The good news is it's the final show to be missing from the archives!

Totally live i think, although only one of the microphones seems to have been switched on. The Top of the Pops Orchestra make a good fist of it.

Less 'Post-Elvis' more 'pre-Shakin Stevens'.
Not tempted by his slightly unsavoury offer to 'Check under his hood' either.

One of the mysteries of these repeats is the regular appearances by this lot - doing just enough to get on with each new single (none of which I can remember a single note of). Will tonights episode be cancelled?

daf

It's been 'postponed' I think - a Kid Jensen one (probably from the following week - 27 October 1977) is going to be shown tonight apparently.

Incredibly annoying - it's my favourite programme, and it seems absolutely CURSED!

I KNOW HE HAS NEVER DONE ANYTHING WRONG AND NEVER WILL [nb]Covering myself legally[/nb], but if Jools Holland ever got arrested, would we never see any of Later again?
This is getting stupid now

All I'm saying about Jools Holland is that I saw the inside of his bedroom when I was a small child.

(I suppose I should add that it wouldn't be his bedroom until 20 years later and I've never met the fella).

SLADE – My Baby Left Me – That's All Right
[close]
(Medley)
Did Elvis'  death inspire this bit of 50's homage, or was the 50's in the air genrally around this time? (Showaddywaddy, Steve Gibbons, Hank the Knife)
Noddy seems to be missing his Top Hat and a small portion of side-whiskers, but that's nothing compared to what Dave Hill is missing - I had suspected a receding hairline under those glam fringes, but not THIS much (unless it's a clever double bluff and he's sporting a bald wig!)
(27)
Spoiler alert
MARY MASON – Angel Of The Morning – Any Way That You Want Me (Medley)

However startling Dave Hill may look, at least he doesn't have THIS haircut - Ooff - what a shocker!
(NEW)
Spoiler alert
DARTS – Daddy Cool/The Girl Can't Help It
[close]
Bah! Not the excellent Boney M song. This lot seem to be another 50's inspired group, which makes them look oddly like a quintessential Eighties Band (with their sharp suits and obligatory Saxophonist). 'Old Matey' The second lead singer reveals himself to be a bit of a nuisance with his audience bothering antics.
(7)
Spoiler alert
RAM JAM – Black Betty
[close]
(danced to by Legs & Co)
OH BOY! Thank Cliff that we weren't denied THIS spectacle!
Not since the Legendary Bebop Deluxe 'Maid in Heaven' routine has the licence fee been so well spent - Bravo Flick, Bravo!
(3)
Spoiler alert
ROD STEWART – You're In My Heart
[close]
(video)
No time for a retake on the intro - it's number three or four  . . . eh, who cares.
Nice to see Mr Creosote on the violin - I forgot how long this takes to get to the actual chorus . . . Less Rod, more Creosote please!
(47)
Spoiler alert
BONEY M – Belfast
[close]
Shame this doesn't have a better tune, as the lyrics elevate it into the realms of barmy genius.
Interesting concept of having a fake band on stage mime to fake band offstage, meanwhile a spinning Bobby does his best to distract us from the tune.
(15)
Spoiler alert
TOM ROBINSON BAND – 2-4-6-8 Motorway
[close]
A classic Kid Jensen 'Rhythm and Rock' record given it's first outing here.
Sounds like its all played and sung live (though, possibly the guitar soloist is hiding behind a curtain?)
(5)
Spoiler alert
ABBA – The Name Of The Game
[close]
(video)
In retrospect they really were the Beatles of the 70's (consisting of three Pauls and a Harrison) - every single a perfectly crafted pop gem. We'll miss them when they're gone.
(NEW)
Spoiler alert
SMOKEY ROBINSON – Theme From The Big Time
[close]
Oh, not Smokie AGAIN! No hang on, it's someone else. They're playing live . . . unfortunately.
Not even the Pops orchestra could produce such a limp and unconvincing performance as this.
'Old Matey' on the bongos seems to panic towards the end, shouting wildly - possibly to be rescued.
(1)
Spoiler alert
BACCARA – Yes Sir I Can Boogie
[close]
®
Same performance as before - impressive 'voogies'.
(8)
Spoiler alert
THE SEX PISTOLS – Holidays In The Sun
[close]
(and credits)
With only one proper performance on the Pops, it's all over for these chaps with the final (proper) single grudgingly slotted in at the end, still it's more than the Clash ever had (the silly-billies!)

Quite! The gals were really going for it (though seemed a bit puffed out by the end) and you sense they enjoy frugging to the heavy guitars more than when they're asked to flounce about to Demis Rossos or whatver. Not knocking Demis btw.

My favourite Boney M song. Just the most mental thing ever. Why not post the lyrics to it, this heartfelt, poignant... wise... song about the 'troubles'

So, just to clarify, when did Dave Travis (if we can drop the 'Sir' from Jimmy Savile, I think we should curtail the monikers of his cohorts too) stop presenting TOTP? Are there likely to be many more of his shows left?
