Names in songs in the afternoon?

Probably quite a niche observation because I imagine the listener crossover is very small between Do!!You!!! Radio and 6music, but whenever I go out with my dad on a Saturday he is listening to Huey Morgan's show in the car, and I've noticed quite a few examples of Huey playing tracks that have been played recently or get played regularly on Do You. Either he or his producer must be a listener. Not really a quibble because they're usually excellent tunes, and I don't know if nicking selections is even much of a faux pas in the radio DJing community. Anyway more people should listen to DoYou

the hum

Why are they running an ad infinitum fake Fluff Freeman Beatles documentary after midnight?

No idea - but when Radio 6 first started they used to re-run old Radio 1 documentaries (from the days when Radio 1 did documentaries) in the small hours which I used to listen to at work on catch-up. Memorably there was the Alexis Korner one about the Rolling Stones that was about 20 hours long and only went up to 1973 or something. Amazing.

I'd like to hear the Mike Smith narrated one, called From Punk to Present - which was the first time I really properly heard the Sex Pistols etc.

don't want to sound like a cunt or anything but I had Craig Charles on the other day doing his Time Machine or whatever it is he does when he's on during the week.

The three clues were Neneh Cherry winning at the Brits, radio stations playing 'Imagine' for John Lennon's birthday, and the reissue of 'There She Goes' hitting the charts.

Now, not to impugn Craig, as I'm sure it isn't his choice, but I think you could run those three things 100 different times and the choice of 6music would always be the Fucking La's.

Sebastian Cobb

I don't listen so maybe just don't understand the format but what does Cherry and Lennon have to do with the La's?

It's a 'guess the year' game, I think? In this case it was probably 1990 - Lennon's 50th birthday was in 1990 (and there was a radio and MTV campaign to play Imagine on his birthday), Neneh Cherry won her first 2 BRIT awards in 1990 and the Steve Lillywhite remix of There She Goes that finally made it a hit single was released in 1990.

Similar to Stereolab/French Disko: The only Neneh song they ever seem* to play is Buffalo Stance

*well, seemed. I admittedly have listened to the station maybe twice in the last two years

Sebastian Cobb

Would take Buffalo Stance over There She Goes and most Lennon solo output any day.

Whenever I hear Lennon's Jealous Guy it always makes my head spin a bit because I was raised on the Ferry version and always associate it with him.

Oh 100% agree

but the choice between that and There She Goes feels like it will always tip in the La's favour.

6Music did well with nominations for the Arias, so hopefully the station is safe for another year.
-UK Station or Network of the Year
-Best Music Breakfast Show - Lauren Laverne
-Best Music Entertainment Show - Craig Charles' weekday show (this won in 2023)
-Best Specialist Music Show - Jamz Supernova on 6

Craig's producer Helen Weatherhead is about to become Assistant Commissioner for the whole station, and she seems really very good so it sounds like another positive development.

**sound of Keaveny kicking a bin**

Did we ever find out why Keavney got binned? I always assumed it was because he was fairly active politically on twitter calling out the tories a number of times, we cant be having that at The BBC!

It seemed like he didn't change any aspect of his show for years and years. Also I think his detached style made more sense as a breakfast show, when nobody really wants to be at/going to work; it became a huge negative when he was on in the afternoon, I'd always dread it on work days, because he'd pop up just around the "the day is starting to drag now" portion of the shift and his can't-be-arsed shtick just made it worse.

The Roofdog

I quite liked him but as a 50 year old bloke who loved Dadrock and Dad jokes he was always going to be first for the chop for anyone looking to shake the station up a bit.

Das Reboot

I liked him in the mornings but never really listened to his afternoon show until lockdown and he just didn't seem right in that slot. But then again, neither did Lamacq.

He has said he was offered another slot (like they've done with Riley & Gid) - probably graveyard/weekend/or both - but decided to walk.

This I think. There's only so long you can get away with ironic dreariness before it becomes real dreariness.

Didn't he have a really bitter, pass-agg playlist on the last show that made it look more like he was pushed?

Deb Grant in for Lauren Laverne for the next couple of weeks.

Norton Canes

As long as she still does House Music!

Not sure he was quite the renegade hard-leftist as you might have thought, I remember him once having Matt Forde on as a guest and they both had absolute diamond-cutters for the Blair era and bemoaning how there's no "kind, sensible centrist" parties anymore, and how we're all "politically homeless" since the evil Jam Man began leading Labour.

Anyway politics aside I thought he was a dreary boring cunt who'd long since given up putting any effort whatsoever into his show so I was absolutely delighted when I found out he was getting sacked.

Oh yes, totally agree. Miles better than Craig Charles though.

We roughhouse the station quite a bit on here but it's usually out of frustration more than anything else.  However these three nominations are officially sound in my book.  The breakfast show has long been the nut 6 Music could not crack but despite prior misgivings about Laverne's suitability for the timeslot I've been enjoying what I have heard.

Radio Lollipop's Chris Hawkins is on holiday at the moment and some nervous guy is 'sitting in' to use the parlance.  There was a terrific texter yesterday - what were you doing in 2006.  Answers included 'I'd just got a job with the local council' and 'I'd just moved into a flat'.  Mega.

I don't remember Keaveny being political on social media until he left 6Music, then the floodgates seemed to open. I  may have misremembered though.

I liked Keaveny a lot until he interviewed Eric Idle and clearly had never heard of the Rutles and even mispronounced it. Idle was kind to him but...

Maybe he was talking about the Roots suddenly.

(unless he called them the Rut-Lees, then I'd look a fool)

Boy did he stick it to the man after he left!

(By ensuring another four years of Tory government after openly slagging off the only real opportunity for genuine change this country has had in the last half century).

But I digress.

Boring cunt doing a boring show and I'm glad he now broadcasts to about 30 people from his shed every week.
