The edge between trans- and posthumanism seems a very fuzzy one. That same Bostrom piece shows how posthumans have access to all of the "modes of being" of transhumans, and how transhumans have access to some but not all of those of posthumans

So they're not mutually exclusive, and the article even has an entire section headed The core transhumanist value: exploring the posthuman realm.

Quote from: Blue Jam on November 19, 2023, 08:22:24 PMWould it be fair to say Bez from Happy Mondays is more of a posthumanist than a transhumanist?

Would certainly fit more with his misunderstanding of The Culture.

🤔

touchingcloth

You know you talk from chip, man, you sound like a transhuman.

Mr_Simnock

loving touching trying to push his transhumanism ideas, hope it goes well into the next musk hating thread too

phantom_power

I mean Musk is on record about agreeing with longtermism so I don't think you can argue it isn't a defining part of him, what with SpaceX and his frequent interviews where he says "fuck earth" and also his love and misunderstanding of The Culture books. Longtermism is sort of an extension or corollary to trans or posthumanism

I can argue it's not a defining part of him. He's just the same as every other billionaire who has to pretend to be anything other than a money-obsessed psychopath.

I think it colours a lot of what he does. His obsession with colonising Mars. His frequent comments that the biggest threat to humanity being the falling birth rate. Lots of other things beside point to him having far more interest in future humans than he does in current ones. I think it is fairly common in Silicon Valley and I agree it is partly to distract or explain his need for money and power but I do think there is part of it that is genuine. He does see himself as a saviour of humanity. He just doesn't want anyone else to do it, even if they could do it better

Like @Famous Mortimer says, it's hard to pick apart where the genuine beliefs stop and where the grift begins. How much of Bill Gates's promotion of malaria medicine is to distract from the fact that Microsoft were absolute cunts through a lot of the 90s, for example?

Jack Shaftoe

I have a friend who very worked with Musk, even if just for a few days, went out for a drink with him and everything. His exact words were 'I have never met anyone who seemed as much like an actual psychopath as Musk. He scared the shit out of me. I don't believe a word he says about people living on Mars or brain implants, he just wants to find a way to live forever and he doesn't give a shit how many other people would have to die to make that happen.'

phantom_power

He was obsessed with SF when he was a kid and still seems to be now so I do believe that his wanting to colonise Mars and brain implants is genuine, but as you say I don't think he gives a fuck who suffers in the pursuit of those causes and longtermism gives him a convenient altruistic let-off. His sociopathy and egotism stops him from wondering whether he is the right person to be developing this stuff as well

Alberon

I can't help noticing he's still not ridden a Dragon capsule to space yet. Let other people take the risks.

Branson, for all his faults, was up in his pretend space plane as soon as he could.

Blumf

Still looking forwards to the dearMoon B-ark project to launch a bunch of cunts around Luna.

Awaiting Starship getting crew rated, so going to be a while yet.

Was the thermonuclear suit they filed the split second court opened today so massive it went all the way past infinity and back to zero?

.

Remember when william shatner went up to space via starship cock? In a post interview he said Branson wanted him to fly on his ship but shatner would have to pay for it himself, lol.

He's also on record promising self-driving cars "next year" literally every single year since 2011.

I suspect he just says things without any real thought into it beyond "will it benefit it me in this exact moment to say [XYZ]? Ok then that's what I'll say".

QuoteIn a profanity-laced outburst, Elon Musk has slammed advertisers that have left X, warning they will kill the social media platform.

At an event in New York, he accused companies that have joined an ad boycott of the site formerly known as Twitter of trying to blackmail him.

"Go [expletive] yourself," the billionaire said in an interview.

Some firms have paused advertising on X amid concerns over antisemitism, including a post from Mr Musk himself.

The Tesla and SpaceX boss apologised on Wednesday for that post, saying it might be the "dumbest" thing he has ever shared online.

But it was his response to a question about an advertising boycott by companies including Disney, Apple and Comcast that caused a stir at the gathering of leaders from the worlds of business, politics and culture.

"I don't want them to advertise," Mr Musk said at the New York Times' DealBook Summit.

"If someone is going to blackmail me with advertising or money go [expletive] yourself.

Go. [Expletive]. Yourself. Is that clear? Hey Bob, if you're in the audience, that's how I feel."

He was apparently referring to Disney CEO Bob Iger, who spoke at the summit earlier in the day.

"Yeah, well I never wanted your smelly advertising revenue anyway". Jeez, what a total fucking manbaby.

EDIT: Sweary NSFW clip in which he comes across like Kendall Roy minus the business acumen and maturity:

Sonny_Jim

Quite incredible how he's tanked his public image in what, oooh I want to say a year?  Basically ever since he bought Twitter.  I reckon he needs to lay off the ketamine a bit.

Alberon

It shines a light on the way he thinks of advertisers - they should just pay him money and shut up. How can it not occur to him that companies do become associated with where they advertise? They're not only thinking of what he's done up to now, but what he's capable of going forward.

Anyway, I'm sure they'll come running back now after that outburst.

I hate social media as much as the next person, but if it wasn't for social media, there's a chance I'd be going into my 40's still thinking Graham Linehan was a great comedy writer and Elon Musk was a genius. A chilling thought.

touchingcloth

Hold on, I thought advertising generated no revenue and all of the real money was in charging Stephen King a fiver for Twitter Blue?

jobotic

He's the richest man in the universe. Why doesn't he advertise on X?

Silly man.

katzenjammer

Does anyone know what 'the actual truth' tweet means?  Could you explain it in English please?  It's word salad to me

QuoteAnother X user, @breakingbaht, replied to this post: "Okay. Jewish communities have been pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them. I'm deeply disinterested in giving the tiniest shit now about western Jewish populations coming to the disturbing realization that those hordes of minorities that support flooding their country don't exactly like them too much. You want truth said to your face, there it is."

I saw his little bit in a higher resolution video. Between the dog-barking head movements and the nystagmus, why do I get the feeling his "micro-dosing" is not quite so micro lately?
