I LIKE that cover!

As do I. Musically, it's great, particularly the drumming towards the end, and I much prefer it to the original.

Actually it isn't.
I think you'll find you typed the above post on Opposite Day.

Spiteface

You know that Fast Show sketch where Billy Bleach sings "Billy Don't Be a Hero" and then says "One day someone will remix that and they'll ruin it"?

It's true of so many songs:

N-Trance:   Paradise City:

N-Trance had a big hit with "Set You Free", then disappeared, only to re emerge as a hite covers band.

Weird.

Awful cover sapped of what made the original so great.  It's "different", but still shit.  Sounds anaemic.

Plus 44 - I am One

For those of you who don't know, when Blink 182 split, Tom Delonge went and formed Angels and Airwaves who to their credit, sound different enough from Blink 182.  Plus 44 were formed by the other two guys and the only people who like them are bitter Blink 182 fans who think that Delonge has become a "fag" (the bitter fans' words, not mine).  Anyway, they've done ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOTHING with the song, and that guitarist is no Billy Corgan.

Pumpkins doing Once in a Lifetime?  Christ, don't make me Youtube it...

Stop it!  No, I won't!...

Sweet Lord.  Oh, and look, he even tried writing lyrics...

Jesus I hated that band.  Right up to Corgan's pissy little 'fighting the good fight against the Britneys' remark when they broke up.  You were 'a Britney', you preening little mutant, you just got to the head-shaving stage early.

Spiteface

I don't see that as a cover, really.  Corgan often went off on some weird rant at the end of or in the middle of songs.  That was just loosely based on the song by Talking Heads, and came at the end of most performances of "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" during that time.  I don't give a shit, the Talking Heads annoyed me anyway.

Stop right there.   That stupid quote got distorted as if to say Corgan was splitting up a band that meant the world to him because of some dumb fucking blonde, when that was far from the truth.

Lengthy quote from that Blog:

Spoiler alert
Quote
Many times I hid things to protect my band mates...for example, its been almost 4 years since I went on my friend tami's radio show and announced that the pumpkins were breaking up...that day, when she asked why we were breaking up, I said something silly like 'I'm tired of fighting britney blah blah'...and it went on to be widely quoted, as if I was breaking up my love, my band, because of some pop star...13 years of my life, and you know, let's pack it in cause their teeth are whiter...by saying that, I was seen as someone who was crying foul, taking his ball, and going home...which was sad cause it wans't true at all...The truth of the matter is is that james iha broke up the smashing pumpkins...not me, not jimmy, but james...did it help that d'arcy was fired for being a mean spirited drug addict, who refused to get help? No, that didn't help keep the band together, not at all...it made it very hard to go on, but we soldier! ed thru it even though our hearts were broken...But d'arcy didn't break up the band, we didn't let her...and jimmy didn't want to break up the band, not at that time...and I would have gone on forever...the smashing pumpkins were essentially my entire life...a dream I still believe in...many friends at that time suggested letting james leave, so jimmy and I could continue on under the name...but I was too loyal to the man I had started the whole thing with, and I protected him until the very end...right up until the last show on dec 2, 2000, when he thanked d'arcy on stage, but not the 2 men standing next to him...and I was loyal until he left the metro without even saying goodbye, or an 'its been great boys!', or a simple 'I love you' to us...no, james iha left the metro that night without saying goodbye to the 2 people he had won and lost and traveled the world with

and another thing, you talk about a bad cover the Pumpkins did, yet it wasn't this?

Yes, that was an MC5 sample and this song is a Status Quo song.  The "fun" starts at about 1:03

And Supertramp are not safe either:

I'm gonna stick up for Scooter here - their output has a certain dumb charm and I'd much rather listen to them than say, Coldplay, or other such worthy shite.  And I do particularly like 'Jumpin...'

(Don't forget also that John Peel played a fair amount of happy hardcore on his show)

That's a bit like choosing if you'd rather be deaf or blind.

However:

I will admit that's a fun song.  It's just the bad covers that bug me.

I remember that. I was listening to Chris Moyles ages ago (I don't know why, I never usually did) and he was running a competition to remix Clocks. This was the winner. It's actually pretty listenable and funny.

Once in a while someone established (but creatively bankrupt) will put out an entire album of covers. Duran Duran's 'Thank You' or even worse Ozzy's 'Undercover.'

David Bowie's 'Pin-ups' had it's moments though.

It's always the singer, not the song.

This just popped up on my LastFM player.  I don't listen to Bowie's 'God Only Knows' very often (for obvious reasons), but every time it comes on I find myself wondering if it's as bad as I remember it being.
I usually convince myself it can't be that bad, as it's Dayyy-vid after all.

...And then, by the time it gets to the chorus, the horrible, lifeless, crooning dirge makes me want to hack off my ears.

I think Bowie is a genius  But this is something else...  It's absolutely indefensible.

Yup.  While it's not essential listening by NUFAN standards, I don't hate it.  It has Cinder from Tilt singing Kirsty MacColl's part, so that's one in the plus column for me.

I hate The Pogues anyway.

Ms Trotsky is a huge fan.  I just don't get it.  I've really tried, but I really don't like them.

they did a brilliant version of true faith but unfortunately they've only got a badly bootlegged live version on youtube which doesnt do it judgement

honourable mentions go out to:

numb - for an industrial cover of push it by salt'n'pepper

midnight configuration - for their cover of no limits by 2unlimited

and the shroud - for their cover of alice by the sisters of mercy.

now... various covers that should never have been...

cruxshadows - merry xmas (war is over)
cruxshadows - here comes the rain again
liberty x - high and dry
any cover (apart from the swans) of love will tear us apart
the killers - shadowplay
laibach - the final countdown
sophie ellis bextor - duel (nobody covers propaganda and gets awway with it)
any cover version done by cradle of filth
16 volt - turning japanese
anything by paul anka
project pitchfork - in the year 2525
the dickies - eve of destruction
bush - in a lonely place

ive omitted most of the "dance / pop remix of" options, because im yet to hear one that doesnt make me want to trap them in a giant wicker vocal chord and plast merzbow at them until their eardrums burst!

The "I was swimming in the Carribbean" bit is delivered matter of fact, like "yeah, I've got a house there, probably"

Obviously, a point missingly over-polite rendition that might as well be called "Where Are My Keys?", but still the most palatable noise I've heard coming out of James Blunt, which isn't saying much. The real fucker is if you put "Where Is My Mind" into Google, that version comes up over the Pixies one for video links.
