Dirty Boy

Quote from: Agent Dunham on September 18, 2024, 03:36:56 PMWe should start counting how many Venture Bros there have actually been up to this point.

See I thought Dunham meant something else:

Spoiler alert
Six.

Hank and Dean.

Rusty and JayJay.

Hank, Dean and Dermot.

Rusty and The Monarch.
[close]

JayJay's existence is interesting given what we find out later:

Spoiler alert
Namely, that Rusty is also a clone. Rusty claims he grew the first clones from "toenail clippings,
I think" which would seem to preclude the idea that the cloning process would result in every Rusty clone also having an absorbed twin. Did Jonas clone Rusty in pairs? After current Rusty absorbed current JayJay, did he decide to just take more precautions around Rusty's safety? Or did current Rusty just avoid death till adulthood?

Or at some point, did Jonas have two separate sons, Thaddeus and Jonas Junior, and the last time they died and current Rusty absorbed current JayJay, he just destroyed any pictures showing two boys?

Actually, I meant:

Spoiler alert
Count all the Hank and Deans we've seen die

Current Hank & Dean

Let's count J.J. and Rusty (we have no reason not to at this point):
Quote from: J.J."We're the Venture Brothers."

That's the count so far and we have many more to add in the future (let's not get ahead of ourselves).
[close]

That makes 27, so far.

Quote from: Agent Dunham on September 18, 2024, 03:29:30 PMThat's harsh. Amazing montage opening culminating in the recapture of Rusty, set to the Rozalla remix (made a couple of decades after the original song), and then straight into the amusingly misleading "new" opening credits. "But we're the Venture Brothers". The staff (forgotten sidekicks). Orpheus' angst and Brock, and later, Rusty playing him. And then off to The Monarch in prison, etc, etc. And that's just the first 5-6 minutes.

Maybe it'll make more sense on a rewatch after seeing a few more episodes (lots of seeds being sown).

It all made sense to me, it just felt very busy. I did love that opening Rozalla montage, that was fantastic. It's not like I'm saying that there's nothing good in an episode if I criticise an aspect of it. But you listing just how much they crammed into the first 6 minutes doesn't exactly convince me it's not overstuffed! Like, the forgotten 'ethnic sidekicks' thing is a funny idea but it's thrown in then discarded, it doesn't need to be there. (And the boxer guy talking over everyone the whole way through doesn't help matters either.) That time could have gone towards the Orpheus in Hell thread which I would have liked more of because it was interesting and felt a bit rushed.
I guess it's just personal taste, but I much prefer an episode like Assassinanny where there's loads of stuff going on (two present day plot threads and flashbacks, returning regulars, new characters), but they all tie into each other and reflect each other. Like intercutting between Dean trying to kill his father and Brock preparing to kill his father figure. I find that more satisfying than the more hectic feel of a Face Of Death.

This doesn't gives us information about Rusty, as he only mentions the toenail clippings in reference to the clones of Hank & Dean.

They're canon. Lots of seeds being sown, as mentioned before. I guess they didn't want to waste anymore episodes just getting the season rolling again.

Spoiler alert
True, but a huge theme of the show is that Rusty isn't much of a super scientist in his own right and coasts or sells off his father's inventions. That's why I'm wondering about how he was cloned and the process involved and how he managed to have an absorbed twin. Honestly - and especially given the reveal that he gestated Hank and Dean in an artificial womb at the end of the movie - I'm leaning more and more towards Jonas growing clones in pairs and current Rusty absorbed current JayJay during the process.

That's your own theory headcanon.

I didn't say they weren't canon! And yeah, they're sowing loads of seeds all at once, hitting the ground running, just like they did at the beginning of the first season, which is why it feels similar.

Agent Dunham

I'm sorry if it seems I don't get it, as the pace and detail never lets up from now on. We're up to speed until a little lull in season 5 (they even go on holiday).

Lily Simpson hunts down and reviews the trans episodes and narratives from film and television, and they recently gifted us their take on the VB's trans episode and its transgender character (Hunter Gathers), which we have all just viewed (S02E03 Assassinanny 911). Some notes on the definitely cisgender Dr (ex-)Girlfriend from a trans perspective, too.

Spoiler warning for newbs (glimpses of future episodes).

Oh ta I'll watch that later.

Not loving the casual transphobia of 02 and 03, very mid 2000s attitude

I just got through all of S1 since I realised it was easy to watch on 4od, so I fitted it into my evening schedule of watching 1980s pervert cartoons from Japan. It's something I've always known about but I don't think I've ever seen, never mind watched, an episode of before.

Really helpful to have the production stuff in this thread because the editing and sound on the early episodes was sometimes atrocious and it's interesting that was because of problems with the storyboard software and knowing what you need to send off to Korea to get the right work back. The feeling that you're watching a coloured animatic seems to diminish as it goes on. If I'd just dipped into it myself I might have given up but this thread had me persevere.

As for the writing it's interesting how it goes from general parody/reference stuff into a wider thing about the character backgrounds which opens it up a lot beyond "ahh you know what this" nods. Not to say that it didn't have good jokes and lines. Anyway, looking forward to watching S2.

also I liked the Disneyworld episode I thought it was funny. And I still hear Patrick Warburton as Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which tickles me. Great voice though

September 25th - 04 Escape to the House of Mummies Part II + 05 Twenty Years To Midnight + 06 Victor. Echo. November.

I'm away from home for a few days.

Dirty Boy

"Slower than haunted house spiked walls, but not quite as slow as evil scientist spiked walls"

Mummies is more an intentional return to S1 type capering and is no worse for it (even though it doesn't advance the plot any).

Have to say i've never liked 'The Master' or his Family Guy-tier dialogue. I really like Orpheus though even if he's kind of a one joke character at this point (say something mundane and/or camp in THAT VOOOOICE!)

Twenty Years To Midnight

I'm not going to say it.

Love this episode. It's one i'd show to someone who's never seen any VB, but wants to get the general idea. Everything in this works for me. It has one of the best deleted scenes as well

Spoiler alert
12 INCH CHEWBACCA!!

First appearance of Action Johnny who i know is modeled on a older, seriously fucked up Jonny Quest, but he doesn't half remind me of Jim Thirlwell. JJ looks more like Terry Gilliam.

Need to watch the other one again, but
Spoiler alert
It's strange they never returned to Kim apart from one reference in a much later episode about her going "all churchy" or something like that. Seems like the way fans pestered Jackson and Doc about her career as a supervillain made them dump the character altogether

H. Jon Benjamin doing his voice before everyone knew him as Bob Belcher though.

"nice shot William Burroughs, you hold a gun like a guy who plays Riven": that's quite a line.

Stinky Lomax

I enjoyed all of these, though Mummies Pt II a little less so - I'm not super into Billy and Pete, the Egyptian guys were just the basic 'ha ha rubbish supervillain' thing that I got from The Monarch before he developed a bit, and agreed on The Master (apart from his dialogue not being particularly sharp, perhaps I missed something but I didn't find it very clear why Orpheus had gone to him and why it didn't work and all that, felt very wishy-washy). Still lots to like overall though (I also was going to quote the Riven line!), and the other two were crackerjack.

I think The Master is meant to be using Zen-like technique to answer queries, so the mundanity and lack of seriousness of his dialogue (which is in complete contrast to Orpheus' approach to any dialogue given him to speak) is to challenge Orpheus. As the notes on the episode explain, Orpheus wants a spell to make himself tiny (for his science vs necromancy face-off with Dr Venture), so, instead, the Master belittles him. Omnipotent whimsy. HJB plays Satan very similarly in Lucy, Daughter Of The Devil (which may be why he got the Master part).

But I'm in the H. Jon Benjamin can do no wrong camp, through being a fan of Home Movies (Coach McGuirk, Jason Penopolis), Archer[1] (Sterling Archer), Lucy, Daughter Of The Devil (Satan) and Jon Benjamin Has A Van (which also introduced me to Nathan Fielder).

[1]J.G. Thirlwell also did music for this series in later seasons.

idunnosomename

I always forget Jon did Jason on Home Movies as well, just like I often forget he's also Jimmy Pesto Jr.

Yeah, I read that in the notes, but I didn't find it clear while watching the episode.

Agent Dunham

Presumably the Master already knows what Orpheus wants without having to ask or be told.

Mister Six

Only just found this thread. Wish I'd got to it before you got to series 2, as I've been meaning to rewatch from that point on, but I've been committed to too many things now.

Anyway!

Quote from: Agent Dunham on September 25, 2024, 12:55:13 PMEscape to the House of Mummies Part II

My first Venture Bros episode! Quite misleading in terms of what the series is actually like, but I was won over the moment Rusty said that the inbred Egyptian pharaoh "seems to be very angry with his foot".

Quote from: idunnosomename on September 28, 2024, 01:12:29 PMI always forget Jon did Jason on Home Movies as well, just like I often forget he's also Jimmy Pesto Jr.

At least he does a different voice (almost) for Jimmy Pesto Jr.

Sacrilege! Actually, i probably wasn't mad on Billy to begin with, but he became one of my favourite characters in the whole show. He's got some great stuff coming up and i love the double act with White.

Billy and White's friendship is so adorable and it only gets cuter as the series progresses

Those three shaky tellings of the story of Billy and Phantom Limb (in S02E06 Victor. Echo. November.) are a portent to the episode Billy literally comes into his own.

Which reminds me...

That S3 episode 'The Invisible Hand Of Fate' is genuinely moving and brilliant and again is one of my favourite episodes of this incredible show

Yeah, I'm hoping they grow on me the same way other characters have. Honestly I think at least half of it is Billy's voice.

Also, thanks to them noting the Bozo The Clown in the panic room, I now understand that Oozo The Clown in Day Of The Tentacle is a direct reference to something!
