Chris Morris: Transphobe?

You'd certainly hope not but, listening again to Blue Jam, there are quite a few sketches about people switching genitals. I can't think what other subtext there would be to them. Is it just a bit of silliness or, as internet types are fond of saying, is it 'problematic'?

princeps

Perception of many social justice issues was entirely different then, so criticizing it in contemporary context is wrong in my opinion.

Trans awareness has come along in leaps and bounds over the last couple of years, which is great, but it does make for some odd disconnects when stuff like this crops up in recent memory. I'd say it wasn't something people gave consideration to at all, largely because trans folk didn't have a voice back then.

I wouldn't imagine he's a Transphobe, it's probably more the absurdity of the situation appealing to his sense of humour. You could make an argument that that's problematic in itself, but I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.

I genuinely fancy him when he's dressed up as Sukie Bapswent so if he is I'm sure that fact would really piss him off.

If so, watch the film The King of Comedy.

It's fill your boots time (with cum)

I completely disagree. Perceptions of social justice issues only change because intelligent individuals and groups force the change. My beliefs are many and varied, but as an intelligent[nb]i hope[/nb] and questioning human being i take responsibility for them. If in 100 years' time[nb]provided human are still around then, dubious[/nb] my views are shown to be unenlightened, accepting of the status quo and unsympathetic towards venerable causes then more fool me.

Watching this ridiculous "Month of Zen" Daily show stream a bit i've spotted a few transphobic jokes in there too, as well. Thoughtful, intelligent, compassionate comedy should be at the vanguard of challenging these issues, not only raising the flag when the wind is already blowing.

On the other hand, off the top of my head i can only remember the "Little girl balls" sketch which i found funny (and still would, i think) because of the absurd specificity of a 45 year-old man and a little girl, or whatever it was. I can't remember any other trans-related jokes off the top of my head.

There are a couple in the second episode - a man with the genitals of a baby and a woman with those of a duck. Also one in another episode, about a man getting a cock and balls attached to a canary. "Quite a few" might be an exaggeration.

A duck?

Definitely Transphobic.

Yeah, surely the humour from the run of genital switch sketches in Blue Jam is more about the incongruity and specificity. There's also the added twist that in a couple of the sketches, the speaker is deciding on the behalf of another person/animal what they'd be most comfortable with.

Spiral King

Standing by what I said at the time of the Blue Jam Series 2 repeats:

Absolutely not transphobic, in my opinion. Just Morris making fun of otherkins 15 years ahead of the creation of Tumblr. Good stuff.

I think a lot of Morris' comedy ideas are based upon "these ridiculous extreme things could possibly happen", and even if Morris didn't know otherkin existed (apparently they were making their presence known as early as 1990), I think he predicted them by taking gender dysphoria to a ridiculous conclusion. Call me "truscum" or whatever, but I'm not convinced someone can identify as a toaster or whatever and feel it undermines people who are really struggling in society as trans.

Dannyhood91

I honestly never saw any transphobia in those sketches. Far too surreal to be taken seriously.

I don't think he's some hate spewing monster (I was being clickbaity with the thread title) but I wondered if he was indulging in some easy target/thoughtless punching down type stuff with those sketches. As I said, I couldn't imagine what other subtext there might be to them. I don't know what these Otherkin are - do I want to know?

Otherkin is used in the modern parlance to describe someone who identifies as something they actually aren't. Wolfkin being someone who identifies as wolf and that sort of malarkey. There's been a load of people coming out the wood work who identify as otherkin as of recently. While I don't doubt some people are otherkin (i'm sick of typing that), weather that's a mental condition or not I'm not the one to say.

The fact there are sooooo many coming out as otherkin though leads me to believe a load or just doing it for attention.

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

So if they want to live in the sea, are they merkin?

Obvious things I've just realised: "mer" in "mermaid" refers to the sea.

You obviously identify as the otherkin preference of a 'dyslexic'.

Can't say I approve but each to their own and best of luck to ya

Bhazor

Bah, that's nothing. Look at all the jokes he made about pedophilia, death, rape, incest and drugs.

Fucking racist-pedophilic-raping-transphobic-necrophiliatic-islamophobic-antiamerican-homophobic-miosogynist. He deserves death.

Hollow

Probably a bit late to bring it up really...anyway in those sketches if I remember correctly, it was the parents who were subjecting their offspring to operations they couldn't possibly have given consent for...ie it's an absurdity.

PC panic over, Chris Morris in not 'transist'...and even if he is, no-one in the whole world cares, apart from his apparent admirers.

gerostock

By implying that parents shouldnt give their six year old daughters futanari surgery Chris Morris is perpetuating our rape culture. I call for a boycott of all Chris Morris films and TV shows oh wait.

Is this one of those things where we pretend a totally calm discussion where nobody even slagged Morris off is some kind of mass-hysteria?

Cheesewogg

Isn't "transphobe" a person who fears driving? I'm sure I've heard this of non driver/car owning celebs like Charlie Brooker and Derren Brown.
Literally homophobia isn't accurate either, is it?

fartedonmyballs

No. As a bonafide, card carrying occasional transvestite( can't really speak for proper trans people though) about town I can, like many others here, say that I realise morris's absurd references to genital swapping and gender based grammatical mish-mashes are nothing more than an extension of morris's hilarious and sometimes genius penchant for twisting otherwise mundane routine concepts or norms into completely unrecognisable and unexpected outcomes for comic effect. The humour is never based around the idea that a person would want to change sex being bad, but just presenting you with something that is completely ridiculous or unexpected. In that time, there wasn't the awareness of trans people and the descrimination that there is now, and yet I can't think of single sketch which intentionally sets out to make a transgender trait a punchline. In fact, I think that was probably below his level of humour anyway, and if any humour was derived from them, it wasn't malicious but but based in grammer or convention mashing. In fact, in the same way he would say "cheese wog" or set out to bemuse darkus howell, I know the humour there was purely because he could get away with saying something so ridiculous.

fartedonmyballs

If anything, he clearly has some issue with doctors. But trans people, no.

Well, his dad is/was one, so that's probably where the fascination came from.

Both his parents are/were GPs, so I believe, not just his father.

Well then, 'Mr Gong Facts', it's my turn now.

I Googled 'Chris Morris parents' and it lead me to Chris Morris's Wikipedia page.

On there, it clearly states:

Quote from: Chris Morris's Wikipedia PageMorris was born in Colchester, Essex,[4] to father Paul Michael Morris, a GP,[5] and mother Rosemary Parrington[6]

In this post of mine, you can't read the footnotes for [4], [5] and [6] though[nb]Although I do hope you tried, like I did when I was previewing the post.[/nb], but I bet you want to read number 6, and are now probably looking at this before reading the rest of my post.

Well, more fool you, because I have read footnote [6] and it refers to the 'Disgusting Bliss' book.

Then, because the Wikipedia footnote doesn't actually say which fucking sentence is being referred to, I have read the entire book to identify the reference.

Fortunately, it occurs on the first page of chapter 2[nb]I didn't really read the whole book again, I just skipped for a few pages and got lucky; factual information about someone's life is usually in chapter 2 of a book and this was no exception.[/nb].

Quote from: Disgusting BlissChris Morris was born on 15 June 1962 in the village of Buckden, Cambridgeshire, to parents who were both doctors.

Well, that settles that then.  You are right, Mr Sheep.

OR DOES IT[nb]Duhn-duhn-DUHN![/nb]?

Let's read on for one more sentence.

Quote from: Disgusting BlissHis father, Michael Morris, was the local GP, and his mother, Rosemary Parrington, had taken on what were then expected duties of a doctor's spouse as a full-time, unpaid administrative assistance in the surgery.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am a fair and reasonable man, and I am doing this for no other reason other than to entertain myself until my washing finishes[nb]I then have some ironing to do.[/nb].

I am merely arguing that, perhaps, Chris Morris's mum was actually a secretary in Chris Morris's dad's surgery and she may not actually have been a doctor.

Thus, you are wrong :)

Kelvin

How the hell has it taken me this long to learn that Morris was born in my home town?

And next to mine (Brampton).

Also, when glancing at the thread for a moment I thought it was implied that both Morris' parents were transsexuals. Now that would have been interesting.

I think you're a massive sexist.  I for one think that his Mum was definitely a GP or a top specialist or something and his Dad probably a cleaner or something.  If he was a doctor he was doctor of gender media studies or some shit.
