This is not that, but I feel Mythic Quest has this stuff covered, in a roundabout way. And it's great

I watched Galaxy Quest tonight for the first time in years and years thanks to its mention in this thread. What a genuinely great film. Hits all the right beats, perfectly paced, funny without being over-the-top so the dramatic elements land, and doesn't let its 'mainstreamness' be an issue.

It's even better than I'd remembered.

What's a more recent high concept comedy movie that works as well as Galaxy Quest? I'm struggling to think of any.

the rock monster scene looks really great for 1999. Although it was ILM. I mean it helps all the reference for the character is right there in the location footage because it's made out of the rocks.

I've not seen Barbie but that's like the highest-grossing comedy film ever now and that's pretty slick, is it funny though?

Quote from: McDead on September 10, 2024, 04:09:44 PMYeah, this thing has come about five years too late (to capitalise on superhero movies) and ten years too late (catching the last of Armando's waning enthusiasm and energy)

Certainly agree with the first part. I can't be fucked watching anything superheroes themed for probably ten years. Did enjoy The Boys, but haven't bothered with last series such is my collapse in interest. The idea that a critique on that media might pull me back in? Well, it'll need to be Sopranos level of rave reviews to tempt me.

Can you go into more detail re your inside info on Avenue 5? I enjoyed watching it but you could almost sense things weren't quite right behind the scenes.

Oh Gawd, this was ages ago, not sure I can remember the details to be honest. I think a lot of it was perfectionism shading into lots of last-minute changes that weren't necessarily helpful to the cast and crew, he said vaguely. Perhaps all that's being worked out in this show.

Although didn't AI say in that recent Richard Herring podcast that he's not that involved in this project other than the initial script? He did say he'd been into Marvel comics as a kid and written an episode of Spider-Man and Daredevil though, which surprised me. So at least he's not coming at this from 'cuh, comic book movies are for kids, yeah?' POV.

I mean, they are sort of for kids, but also some of them are great.

I really enjoyed the first episode. Cast were great all around, Jessica Hynes was delightful as always and given plenty of room to shine. Much better than the trailer made it out to be.

Had some great lines and a handful of genuine laughs, which is more than I can say for most comedies.
