Late to the party, but I've only just discovered Fred Armisen's Ian Rubbish character, an original punk whose attitude to Thatcher makes the rest of his band a bit uncomfortable. The singing style is more Strummer (as Armisen said on Adam Buxton's podcast) but the character is very Lydon.

The attention to detail and specific accents in that are really good (particularly from a bunch of Americans)

Good news everyone, turns out there *is* a future in England's Dreaming after all...

Always felt Lydon just wanted to be the polar opposite of what the modern consensus was, but then there was that altercation with Kele from Bloc Party (backed up by other witnesses) where he apparently hurled racist abuse at him so now I'm not so sure.

Lydon is far more self-aware, genuinely intelligent and insightful than Morrissey though, which makes this all the more disappointing for me.

But the signs have been there for a while and some lyrics on the latest PIL record are climate-denialist, transphobic and ploughing that "young people are all depressed now, boo hoo just get on with it" furrow.

I'll still listen to the first three PIL records though. Even if he is a cunt.

I thought it was his entourage who were supposed to have said the racist things. He doesn't seem especially anti-black himself, I'll give him that.

This was his response to that incident

https://www.loudandquiet.com/interview/john-lydon/

Quote"He was trying to sell a record off my back," John says. "People get used to this world of The Sun, The Daily Mirror and the Murdoch empire nonsense and they fall into it without even realising it. They knew they couldn't pursue any such nonsense because it was ungrounded, pointless and trivial, and they kind of humiliated themselves. They did it without fully understanding my own family and my own background and my own social status. They must have presumed I was some kind of whatever and that was that." John stops and pauses before sadly and sombrely stating: "They hurt a lot of my family, very much. My Jamaican grandkids were horrified at reading that, it upset them deeply. I mean it's my family, we're multi-racial, same as my friends, always has been, always will be. You can bandy the racism slant around so easily these days and you don't have to justify it, and I'd like to see a payback on that. If you put up a false accusation you should also put up the price that comes with it. But I hold no animosity, life's too short, I'm not in this world to perpetuate enemies."

That seems very heartfelt. Perhaps I'm wrong on that assumption then, although there are testimonies that say otherwise.

I thought other people saw the fight and broke it up, but it was only Bloc Party man who alleged racism from the entourage (not Lydon himself). Could be wrong about that, but the articles I can find don't mention anything else.

Watching the LBC interview now, it's frustrating because his observations are probably valid, but the conclusions he draws or the causes he attributes to them are just wrong. What has the EU got to do with the commercialisation of city centers? He lives in LA, a city which has branded streets and where all the "local communities" have been pushed outside of the county lines, partly via policies he likely voted for as a property developer. It's such basic-minded thinking, whereas he was once rather insightful and (correctly) skeptical of the sorts of people he's parroting now.

I also don't know how long you can claim "working class" for when you shack up with an heiress at age 20 and move to Malibu. It's debatable, but it doesn't cut it for me when you're using that card to justify supporting Brexit or blaming everything on the immigrants.

Auntie Beryl

My only interaction with Lydon was when his entourage were present, and it was unpleasant.

That said, he was leading the chorus that night.

Kankurette

It's easy to go on about how great Brexit is when you don't live with the consequences.

Or you could separate the art from the artist and just listen to the music.

New soundboard just surfaced...

exactly, I couldn't give a fuck what bollocks he says, does or is gonna say or might still do, he has left his legacy on some records and film that any naysayer here or elsewhere could even come close to.

yeah but it's funny when you're a young geezer being a twat

but when you're a middle aged twat it's just pure cringe

PaulTMA

I always wondered when his 'entourage' were accused of racism over the Kele incident if it perhaps meant anyone in particular, perhaps someone who had a bit of a name for himself in terms of not being very nice

Why would anyone want to be an antichrist ffs?

It beggars belief.

He doesn't say he wants to be one, he just is one.

Now he does want to destroy passers by but that's a different matter altogether.

It's fucking amazing how many people I encounter online in various fandoms that find this an alien concept.

I get this. And as I'm writing this I'm watching "the filth and the fury"

His anti immigration diatribe makes it for me, harder to stomach.

He's utterly brilliant in this docu
His contributions are phenomenal. I'm almost in awe of him. Hanging off his words
Still think he gives Matlock a hard time tho ha

Anyone else notice on the Grundy interview
Glen is the most cheekiest

Jones,  the blue nun kicks in and he just thinks fuckit
Lydon is of course hilarious
"Rude word, next question"

But Glen Matlock owns this. He acts completely in control.

JesusAndYourBush

My favourite line in the Grundy interview is "They're as drunk as I am."

Nobody in there is saying they don't like Lush, though, so it's the opposite of what you're saying. You seem confused

dontpaintyourteeth

There's a difference between "separate the art from the artist" and "it's not worth ever questioning anything an artist says, does, or thinks"
