Is Zoom new? It's been Hangouts and Slack[nb]Not a euphemism for the state of things after Netflix and chill. [/nb] for years, but people have suddenly got all vocal about Zoom which is - wait for it - identical to Hangouts and Slack.

I've been using Zoom for about 18 months now as my TEFL company uses it, it seems pretty simple to set up and use in general.

I may pop in during the evening part of this, once everyone's drunk and will be unable to remember what was said the next day.

This could all end terribly badly

I do hope so.

You might get to see my wife throw a kettle at me. "who the fuck are you talking to! Why are you having fun!"

Could block my camera and mute everything, and just observe like at a zoo or Victorian asylum.

A fine addition to the lockdown tug library.

Had anyone heard of Zoom before Covid? I hadn't but now it's all anyone goes on about. I'd be up for this except on full lockdown and only have 3 cans of Punk IPA for the next 3 weeks.

I don't think I trust it. Clicked on a link elsewhere for a Zoom meetup, thinking it would be a web-based thing, and it immediately wanted me to download and install their software with no option to find out more about it first. Also I did a Google and found loads of people going on about how it monitors everything you do on your computer. Also I'm a curmudgeonly shut-in who finds group socialising immensely stressful, so I'll be giving this a miss.

Ive got a six digit icq number

Do you have to pay a subscription for it?

My housemate had a Zoom party at the weekend, and I got the impression one of them had a licence and the rest just hopped on for free.

BlodwynPig

The free version of Zoom allows only 40 minutes of air time

I do that in CaB radio chat, can't imagine what video feed would be like.

Nope. Just assuming it's something like Skype

DrGreggles

It is, but there's a 40 minute limit on the free version.

I'm looking at potential alternatives and found this: https://store.bluejeans.com/

anyone still have MS Chat installed

olliebean

Can't Skype do it? According to their website, they can and it's free, you don't need to install anything, and you don't even need to sign up for an account.

kittens

i hosted a zoom "meeting" last night that went on for over 2 hours and didn't have to pay a dime.

That's what I was thinking. Is it just that Zoom is the new cool thing so everyone's migrating over to it? (god I sound old)

pancreas

Skype is not always that stable and Zoom dynamically flicks between people who are talking. Maybe Skype can do that? Plus raising your hand and shit.

El Unicornio, mang

Ok. My mates want to do a zoom chat later so I guess I better get on board, although I kind of hate being on webcam

That's also my feeling.

One thing I know about Zoom is apparently it automatically kills the sessions if meetings overrun by a decent amount, which is something I approve of.

I got a Teams account yesterday it seems fucking shit, can't even see who is in a room.

Hangouts does this and it's free.

Do I need to shave for this?
