Free Subtitle Generator

You guys are smart and notoriously parsimonious, so riddle me this: I have a bunch of foreign language videos that I want to automatically generate subtitles for (for free obvs). Ideally it would also translate them into English too but I can do that myself if needs be.

Anyone done this successfully? I've tried Youtube but it's seemingly random if it works or not, so any other suggestions?

I've had a lot of success using whisper to caption English-language videos. If memory serves it can do other languages and possibly translate them to boot. It looks like there are online places you can do it, but if you're handy with Python you can download and run it on your own machine.

SubtitleEdit has integration with Whisper which might be easier than using it directly, plus it does auto-translate too. https://github.com/SubtitleEdit/subtitleedit
