Quote from: Jittlebags on November 29, 2021, 10:39:00 AMApprantly Murray Walker came up with the slogan "Opal Fruits, Made to Make your Mouth Water". As well as "Trill makes budgies bounce with health". So fuck knows what he was on back in the 60s.

Seems the Trill fact is correct but not the Opal Fruits, according to someone who worked for him who wrote to The Times.

QuoteYou are correct to say that, in spite of the popular myth, my former colleague Murray Walker did not write "A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play" (Sport, last week). I know that for a fact because I did, together with another colleague, Francis Harmar-Brown. But, contrary to your report, Walker did not write "Opal Fruits: Made to make your mouth water" either. Again, that was me and Harmar. Indeed, I was awarded £5 for coming up with the name Opal Fruits. Credit where it's due.

The Daily Mirror always describes her as 'Bajan singer' Every. Fucking. Time.  I always forget what it means (someone from Barbados) and always end up looking it up.  Hopefully the process of writing this post might cement it in my brain so I'll not have to look it up next time.

I always remember this because my favourite hot sauce - which I didn't add to the hot sauce thread, cos fuck you all - is Bajan hot sauce. I know nothing about Rihanna, though, other than that she is Bajan. And spells her name wrong. And isn't actually called Rhiannon.

Is this just to check if folk are paying attention?

There was also the Yorkshire-born singer Rhianna who had a few minor hits in the early-mid 2000s, notably "Oh, Baby".

Lily Allen was offered a gig in 2010 in which she would have been paid in bitcoin. She turned it down. It would be worth something like £12 billion today if she'd taken it.

If I'd kept the £250 worth of bitcoins I had in 2011, they'd be worth about £2 million today. We all have our crosses to bear.

In 2027, Jeremy Renner launched the official Jeremy Renner app where you could connect with Jeremy Renner and take part on the exciting Jeremy Renner giveaways with cool Jeremy Renner prizes.

Jeremy Renner shut the app down in 2019 after trolls impersonating Jeremy Renner flooded the app with comments about how much Jeremy Renner enjoyed using internet pornography.

The word "arc", in the context of a story arc, is not in the dictionary - at least not in any of the online dictionaries I checked. Some of them have "story arc" as a separate entry, but don't include that meaning under "arc" on its own. The only one with anything was the OED, which has it not in the main entry, but underneath in "Draft additions December 2002."

That's because the entry for ARC n. hasn't been revised for the 3rd edition yet. When it is, the addition will be integrated into the body of the entry.

The two best online dictionaries (aside from paywalled sites like OED) are Merriam-Webster and Lexico (part of Oxford Dictionaries) and both have this sense under arc.

Oh, while we're on the subject, the other amazing thing I found out is that I can access the OED's paywalled site for free using my library card number.

Mine worked too, and I've not used it in years.

Blinder Data

There are just 25 blimps in existence.

Twenty. Five.

So if you've ever seen a blimp, there are only 24 others out there.

AMAZING!

I joined the National Library Of Scotland (Scottish equivalent of British Library) about 10 years ago but have never been, but they give you a free log-in which gives you OED as well as stuff like Oxford Reference, JSTOR, and Times and Scotsman newspaper archives. Mildly useful anyway. Ask your librarian.

I can get into the library's Ancestry account from home, as well, since shortly into the first lockdown. They started allowing remote access when all the libraries closed, and haven't disabled it yet.

That's not a blimp, it is a "Blimp-styled aeronautical entertainment balloon device".
