I just finished this, what a horrible book!

Horrible meaning bad or horrible meaning unpleasant

Unpleasant. Reminded me of the film Bad Boy Bubby.

Good book, as is The Dead School. He's got a real sense for the dark brutal currents of small town Irish life, I think.

His latest one in kind of psuedo blank verse about Irish immigrants in London threatened to be right up my street for a while but I thought it was kind of bad in the end. I don't know, really, it was alright but I thought some lazy writing and clunky phrasing was concealed by the odd form and it didn't have anywhere near the horrible intensity of Butcher Boy. I feel like Pat McCabe used to DJ in a pub near my house in Dublin but this could be a totally false memory, a lie someone told me, or whatever.

hmm yes this is rather grim isn't it

The film has one of the great screen nonces in Milo O'Shea's priest with a bonnet fetish.
