I hadn't really thought about him in years but this news really hit hard. The idea of him and Chester Brown and Seth hanging around Toronto, with Matt sponging off the others, was a big part of "indie" comics for me.

Though the news that he'd had chest pains for months but was (presumably) too cheap to go to a doctor sounds like the most in-character demise possible. Unless he'd died in a freak wanking accident I guess

Ah fuuuck. Loved this guy's earlier work - the Peep Show collection was a revelation to 17-year old me in 1992  and while I didn't care as much for the later Spent, The Poor Bastard was still pretty good. Too much about wanking and porn in the later stuff.

Loved The Poor Bastard. I haven't read any more of his work but will check it out.
