Quote from: Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth on August 11, 2022, 10:20:09 AMThe "turn of the century" comment seems apt as Diesel seems to be stuck in that era. I saw a video of him geeking out on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy and thought he could be a really likeable screen presence, if he weren't so committed to playing a nu metal kid's idea of the coolest, toughest bloke in the world. I guess he knows which side his bread is buttered though.

Yeah, he doesn't seem a bad bloke, just trapped by his ego, and the early 2000s. Fair play, he's made it work as a career.

It's shit isn't it? A bunch of guys ignoring their girlfriends to play cringe songs on the piano, Tom cruise threatens a girl in a lift, one of them dies and they bomb some fourgein village, the end. Why?

Quote from: Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth on August 11, 2022, 10:20:09 AMI watched it a couple of weeks ago and was going to say much the same - but couldn't be bothered. I started out fully expecting to change channels after 20 minutes, but it held my attention for the duration. Pretty piss poor punch-ups for the most part.

Great observation about him being really nu metal

To be fair they don't bomb a foreign village. They just shoot down some MIGs that are going to attack someone or some shit. Apart from that you are right though. Cruise is such an obnoxious prick in it, which I know is deliberate, but he is such a prick I just want him to smash his brains out on the cockpit with Goose (who is more fun but still a dick). In fact all the male characters are arseholes, with Iceman, the nominal villain, the least of the bunch.

The dogfight scenes are incoherent and you only know what the fuck is going on because the characters keep shouting "MIG on your left" or "he's on my tail" that gives you a clue who is where.

I forgot that Tim Robbins and Michael Ironside were in it, and Adrian Pasdar has a couple of lines.

Danger Zone is still a banger though

Feel like you could randomise the plane shoots with the same music and dialogue and it works the same

Tried to watch Top Gun a few times, just get bored almost immediately and eject. Don't feel like I'm missing much.

I only watched it because everyone says the sequel is loads better and I wanted to see the original before I watched it. I probably needn't have bothered

He could probably play the chin rings bloke out of the Disturbeds if they really needed someone.

There's a film with the rest of the characters from the "Valiant Universe" in it (I was going to say "fan film", but Valiant made it themselves), which was on Youtube but looks like it's been deleted since then. Read about it here if you're really in the mood.

And people wonder why we don't get more kill-crazy warmongers posting on here

George White

International Guerrillas (1990)
Maybe the most indefensible film I've ever seen.
Even the concept of Salman Rushdie being an international supervillain who means to destroy the Islamic world via punjabi disco is slighted by a. the actor looking more like Jerry Lewis/Leslie Crowther, and b. that the heroes are Islamic terrorists who we are supposed to cheer.

FOllow me on letterboxd, guys and gals.

Armed Traffic Warden

Finch

The performances raise this one above a sadly average script. I really enjoyed Finch (Tom Hanks) and Jeffs relationship. I enjoyed the 'angle' it had on a dystopian future. Unfortunately, as I say, I think it lacks that extra level script wise. It's not bad but doesn't do the execution justice. A better tie between Jeff and Finch's (learning) journey would have made it a genuine classic in my book.
As it is, it's a film I'll hold in higher regard than I think it probably deserves. Even at that, it's still a good film. It's just frustrating as I feel it's a draft or two away from being a brilliant film.
7/10

Sebastian Cobb

Get Shorty - Dunno how I missed this one, pretty daft and sprawling and Travolta seems a strange choice for the leading role but was alright for a tired monday film

If they'd featured Faith (aka Zephyr) I'd have watched that no matter how good or bad it was, but the bastards ignored her so I shan't bother.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Valiant didn't exist for much longer, as they're down to publishing one comic a month right now: https://www.comicsbeat.com/valiant-cuts-back-to-one-title-a-month/

I'd love it if Dinesh S bought Valiant back from DMG for a penny and restored his glorious Valiant empire,  but there's probably something standing in the way,  and this is off-topic so I'd better stop chatting about it!

Regarding Top Gun, it's crazy how terrible Tom Cruise's 80s teen idol movies were. Top Gun, Cocktail, Days of Thunder, are all utterly awful, and The Color of Money's pointless too. I can only assume that the Church of Scientology helped him become a better actor. Although the fact that he's called Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder is endlessly amusing.

Brute Force 8/10

Bleak prison drama about a lad who gets into all sorts of strife and has to deal with a sadist in charge of the place. Oh no.

Burt Lancaster is the lead and it's top work from him as always, aggressive , captivating and at times so vulnerable. Hume Croyn is excellent as the lead heel also. It's a little dated, but easy to believe that it would have had serious shock value back in the day.

Atlantic City 7/10

Burt again! However much older playing a 2nd rate gangster who likes to embellish his past who then meets Susan Sarandon in a casino. Louis Malle an elite director in his element with Lancaster and Sarandon electric and who have excellent chemistry . All three names mentioned have done more worthwhile work, but nevertheless happy this was a hit as its a very easy watch. Perfect Sunday afternoon film.

Barefoot Contessa 6/10

Love me some Bogey and cool to see him in color , but don't understand the fuss about this at all. It's at least 30 minutes to long and I just was annoyed I decided to watch this instead of some of Bogart's earlier more interesting work.

Inspector Norse

Tilva Ros 2010 Serbian slice-of-life about teenage skater Toda, whose lives aimlessly in a dead-end town making Jackass-style videos with his best friend Stefan. Seeing his friends drift towards further studies or menial work, and trying to come to terms with his jealousy of Stefan and his girlfriend, he gets drawn more and more to the violence they act out in their videos.
I enjoyed this, it's a hazy and relatively plotless look at youth in a place struggling with its existence after the fall of the Iron Curtain and civil war, with incredibly naturalistic performances - the kids skate, they drink, they insult each other and fight and are casually offensive and puerile - in part because the cast are all playing themselves: the film's director Nikola Lezaic apparently made it after seeing Toda and Stefan's teenage prank videos and cast them and their skater friends and based the film around their lives.
It doesn't have an awful lot to say that we haven't heard before, but it's got great location work, a tense energy and a strong lead and in this case that's enough.

Perhaps they were expecting the coffers to be full after that Bloodshot movie. Shame, cos I rather liked it.

Never seen Days Of Thunder, but the rest of them are all fine 80s fare - not amazing by any stretch, but all solidly above average. He's always struck me as Hollywood's most dependable A-lister.

Patrick Bateman living in the plot of 1984 and pulling Matrix moves, what's not to love?

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

It is a fun bit of action schlock (or was however many years ago I last watched it). Not sure if that's me being dense or the film not actually making sense, but I never got the bit about him
Spoiler alert
swapping guns to frame his partner. And then it turns out the baddies were on to him anyway, so what was the point?
