There goes another great BBC institution. Damn sad. I feared when I heard he'd retired (which he'd previously said he would never do as Letter from America was his life & something to live for) that he must have been diagnosed with something serious. Apparently he was.

I hope to Jehovah that Patrick Moore survives a few more years as I'll be bloody depressed otherwise!! Alastair Cooke was 95 so I guess Patrick may have a few years left yet, with all that seaside air an' all.

It was in these early days that Eric developed hearing problems, which would eventually make him almost totally deaf.
