The Rehearsal - Nathan Fielder's new HBO series

There's not much to go on so far, but this is how the AV Club reported the story:

"Life has not been the same since losing the joy of watching new Nathan For You episodes. And sure, Fielder's worked on some big projects since then: he was part of the Emmy-nominated team of directors behind Sacha Baron Cohen's Who is America? and he worked as executive producer on the delightful How To With John Wilson. But we've been waiting anxiously for Fielder to have his own show again. Thankfully, HBO heard our pleas and they are giving it to us.

Variety reported that HBO has given a series order to The Rehearsal, a show where Fielder "gives people the opportunity to rehearse for their own lives." That's extremely vague, but it sounds like it'd be similar enough to Nathan For You, without the emphasis on "helping" out L.A.-based businesses. We also don't know when it'll begin filming yet, but we're hoping it'll air within the next year.

The show is part of Fielder's deal with HBO, that he acquired in August 2019, two years after the end of Nathan For You. Variety teased The Rehearsal back in 2019 while announcing the deal's news, saying there was an "untitled comedy pilot in which Fielder will star as well as write and direct."And while we wait for Fielder's new show, fans who haven't watched How To With John Wilson definitely need to do so. The comedic docuseries follows documentarian John Wilson, as he encounters characters just as bizarrely amusing as the ones we met on Nathan For You (including a guy who made a foreskin circumcision reversal device). However, How To With John Wilson has a far more wholesome take. Plus, you get to see candid footage of Kyle McLachlan struggling with his MetroCard—a great bonus for us Twin Peaks fans who need a reminder that even our favorite TV stars encounter the awkwardness of being failed by the MTA."

Anything new from Nathan Fielder is good news. Thanks for sharing.

The Mollusk

Yeah hella keen for this. It's been a while since I've watched NFY and my fiancée has never seen it so I think it's time to crack back into it.

I wonder what happened with this project? I was looking forward to seeing a Nathan Fielder collaboration with the Safdie brothers.

It's still in the works as far as I can see, but was probably just delayed by the pandemic.

As the article reminds us, anyone interested in this must absolutely watch How To With John Wilson if they haven't already. It's one of the best shows ever made, I reckon.

Agreed. Amazing show.

Is there any way to watch this without dodgy download?

Really like the look of The Rehearsal, I'm guessing it'll be a different platform for Nathan Fielder to give people unhelpful advice which is never not going to be funny.

Ferris

Very excited about this, without really knowing what it is.

I'd also like to know this. It's always mad to see which shows get picked up over here and which don't.

It's not currently streaming in the UK, but you might be able to watch on HBO Max with a VPN.

The first season was put up on dailymotion just four days ago! Season 2 episodes 1-3 are also on there (from five years ago???)

Ron Superior

Ah cool, thanks! Didn't even think to look there

Captain Z

Those Dailymotion videos look badly cropped to me, and the season 2 links are not the actual show (I guess somebody has edited the title of a much older upload in order to clickbait people). On further inspection, only 1 real episode of the show is there (the one you linked to).

I found all of HTWJW on Soulseek, if that helps.

Also worth watching John's pre-television Vimeo vids, which are much the same format:

Well that's a shame. I've torrented the lot from the Bay, to make sure I actually watch it this time.

The Mollusk

I just started watching HTWJW off the back of this thread (which will piss my friend off who's been badgering me to watch it for years) and it's fucking excellent. I wasn't sure at first and I still think Wilson's awkward voice feels forced and sucks me out of the moment sometimes, but it is nevertheless remarkably edited with some oddly profound and fascinating footage which literally never lets up. This is woven into narratives that themselves don't feel contrived despite the fact they go through ridiculous amounts of post production and rewrites and planning like Nathan For You and Nirvanna The Band, two shows which always succeed brilliantly with their wealth of source material. Kind of annoyed now that I didn't cop this sooner but after binging Joe Pera season 3 last night it's suiting my needs perfectly.

Ferris

I should be watching HTWJW shouldn't I? Shit. I'll add it to the list.

Got to echo this - and an especially wonderful show amongst all the grimness, given that it's about finding wonder and profundity (and humour) in every day life.

To get back onto the topic of Nathan, I thought the teaser he appeared in for HTWJW was one of the funniest things I've seen this year. I wondered if he might disappear behind the camera after NFY ended, so it's great to see that's not the case. Especially when we're talking about a man willing to do this for my entertainment...

Edit: 'At a certain point, I was like, John, this is HBO, what are we doing here?'

Fuck me, he's so funny.

up_the_hampipe

Can't believe I've never seen that. It's hilarious. Thanks!

Interview ahead of the new show. Including an interesting bit about how Nathan For You was partially influenced by everyone's favourite mentalist, Derren Brown.

Not been this excited about a new series in ages.

Ferris

I've watched a few interviews with Nathan, and he's made reference to NFY as being like a magic show several times.

A magic trick mostly relies on preparation and doing things that are so unlikely and unexpected that people choose to believe the "trick" rather than figure out the actual esoteric explanation. One of the reasons NFY works is the ludicrous over-engineering of scenarios. Some episodes have that up front and centre ("The Hero", "The Anecdote", "The Richards Tip"), and some just weave them into the narrative (secretly marrying an uber driver in mandarin, or hiring people from craigslist to do improbable jobs).

I'm really excited to see this, he's a superb writer and performer.

The Mollusk

He also practiced magic as a kid didn't he?

Quote"Door city over here!"

Laughed out loud at this.

Ferris

I chuckled at his observation that the journalist might be sad because by opening their notebook, interview subjects can no longer read the word "NEWS" on the front.

up_the_hampipe

That interview was surprisingly honest, unless it's all another one of his damn schemes to promote the show! I did like that they openly discussed some of the questionable ethics around some moments in Nathan For You.

Noodle Lizard

I knew that Nathan Fielder and Derren Brown knew/respected each other's work (I think Derren listed Nathan For You as his favourite TV show somewhere), but I didn't really consider how similar their work actually is (The Hero especially). Derren's most recent "self-help" type special on Netflix is basically an episode of Nathan For You, it's just not (intentionally) funny.

Great interview, anyway, he really is one of the best we've got at the moment. The article also makes it sound like he's far more involved with the creative side of HTWJW than I thought. Can't wait for this new one, no signs of him having peaked yet.
