Famous Mortimer

Quote from: Glebe on June 06, 2022, 11:40:58 PMSo they time travel to the present day? Was the reboot series set in the '90s?
There was an episode where they did something with drones, so probably not.

Quote from: madhair60 on June 06, 2022, 06:34:28 PMit's like that Ctrl Alt Del comic meme, "Loss", every time it gets posted, going oh yeah... miscarriage. very casual

Aye sure "Cassandra's Miscarriage" is a joke on here as well and I'd love it if someone more eloquent and forceful than me was able to shame that shit out of existence the same way the wanking thread was obliterated a year or two ago. This place is immeasurably better without it but there's room for betterment yet.

And here, I don't give a fuck if anyone thinks I'm precious or sensitive for not wanting to read the word miscarriage being used by some goblin that thinks it's funny. If you want to get a rush from saying something that unpleasant in front of people, get onstage and see how well it goes.

That and they were watching Twilight at a cinema in the first episode.

And also while they were still watching MTV, it was mostly reality show garbage rather than music videos.

This news has totally surprised me and I am delighted. I hope to make this my first post-covid cinema trip, ideally slightly stoned.

Yeah, watched the trailer again and it only mentioned streaming. Damn. I have fond memories of watching the first film at the fleapit Odeon back home.

Consignia

It's a movie in the same sense those extended South Park specials are movies. Just really made for their streaming services but longer than a usual TV episode. I imagine this be longer than the South Park things, but yeah never intended to be cinema movies.

Looking forward to this, though.

idunnosomename

There is the difference that this references the title of their theatrical movie and South Park didn't. Implies it is a direct sequel

The Wikipedia article says

QuoteInitially set after the events of Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, we see Beavis and Butt-Head celebrated as local heroes in their town

But I don't know where they're getting that from since it's not in the given citation.

Remember also that there is also another Beavis and Butt-Head film, Beavis and Butt-Head do England, in which the sniggering duo go to Buckingham Palace and meet the queen. So the "Beavis and Butt-Head do [Location]" format is well established by now.

I can find no evidence that Beavis and Butt-Head do England exists, but I was assured that it was real by Damien Arghand in year seven, and he swore on his mum's life that it was real and he had it on video so I assume this is some sort of oversight on Google's part. (Unfortunately Damien's cousin who lived in Ireland had the video at the time of enquiry)

MrMrs

Anyone know where i can watch the series with music video clips in tact?

RHX

Quote from: MrMrs on June 09, 2022, 12:28:26 AMAnyone know where i can watch the series with music video clips in tact?

Nowhere legally just yet, but Paramount+ are adding the entire collection the same day the movie is released, music videos and all! https://www.avclub.com/beavis-and-butt-head-music-videos-paramount-plus-1849019558

MrMrs

How can they do that? Surely copyright will fuck em

QDRPHNC

Fuck, I'm more excited about that than the new film, I think.

On the subject of it being set in the present day: It's kind of odd how the internet barely seems to have influenced them. I remember one of the telly bits in the 2011 series was a show about a bloke who was obsessed with pornography - you'd expect Beavis and Butthead to be just like him these (those) days, but there they were, glued to the telly, taking the piss as if the previous 20 years hadn't happened.

They're just too poor to own a computer and too dumb to work any publicly available ones without Stewart's help.

Just a heads up that this is available now.

The Mollusk

Nice, thanks for the heads up!

You do mean illegally available, right?

Malcy

Got it earlier. Was looking forward to it last night but no sign so Saturday now!

Rewatching some of the 2011 episodes in advance of this and forgot how great they are. I remember laughing so much the first time I saw this bit, the incongruity of them liking this absolutely terrible song and Butt-head's singing:

The Mollusk

Ahh, this was just alright, I thought. A few good laughs but there's a lot that Judge gets wrong which lets it down. B&B's personalities are off at times, and even for characters who are extremely one note this felt like it was dialled up too much in places, or they otherwise occasionally act uncharacteristically in order to keep the plot moving. In fact it's because of how successfully one note it's always been that as soon as flaws start to appear you see them immediately.

Thoughts on the plot here, some spoilers
The plot itself is far less fun and interesting than I expected, as well. I was hoping for some daft multiverse capers - the trailers really lead us to think that's what's in store - but instead once the space mission is over (the first 25 mins) for the last hour of the film it's mostly just top government officials trying to track them down and wrongly thinking they're brilliant masterminds while they haphazardly goof off. So, just like the other film, except with a bit of time travelling and - wait for it - some modern twists with smart phones and gender politics!

The secondary characters of "Do America" like the FBI agents, the old couple they keep bumping into and the classics like Tom Anderson, Principal McVicker and Mr. Van Driessen are all, crucially, very funny at times. None of the secondary characters in this film are funny at all, and the classic characters barely get a look in, let alone any lines of dialogue. There are one or two attempts at running jokes but they're thin on the ground and completely forgettable. This means that any scenes not featuring B&B become quite arduous, especially later in the film when it's trying to be action packed and failing.

Almost all the good humour throughout comes from Beavis, as Judge still manages to deliver those quirky asides from the character so well. All the muttered "oh yeah, well I'll be damned" bits or disarmingly astute throwaway lines are there and it's great fun as ever to hear them. Buuut then there's some deeper exploration of the character which, again, feels more like clunky plot-moving and is a little too uncharacteristic to be enjoyable.

Ultimately it was disappointing and it's the first B&B thing I've ever seen where I know I'll never be arsed about revisiting it again.

Yeah I agree with most of this. I did think it was sorta nice that Beavis

Spoiler alert
fell in love (in his primitive way)

because there have always been indicators that he is the more sensitive and emotional one, and that Butt-Head is the corrupting influence, the real sociopath.

Another thing I really didn't like was the art style and animation - it's all dead and computery and ugly, like Archer. I've always felt that golden age B&B was weirdly beautiful, something placid and textured about the way it looks.

And the whole thing felt very uncinematic, not big-screen stuff at all, unlike the first film.

Still, it was never boring and I got a few good chuckles.

madhair60

I thought this was great fun. Big belly laughs throughout.

I wonder why Judge didn't direct this one?

The animators made a definite effort to make it look loose and natural like the classic era, jittery edges and hand drawn little details to faces and stuff, but it's still glaringly obvious it was done on a computer so all of that stuff looks even more false and nasty. I think bizarrely if they'd polished that stuff up more and made it look super clean it probably would have looked better.

This is my one big hangup about the film, which I otherwise mostly enjoyed. I thought the 2011 revival did a pretty seamless job of updating the look of the show for the digital era while preserving the basic look and rhythm of the original. The style of this new one feels very jarring in comparison and honestly I'm slightly surprised that Judge signed off on it. The movements and expressions of the characters have that sort of smooth but halting digital puppet quality that yeah, is reminiscent of Archer and several other contemporary cartoons but just doesn't fit with Beavis and Butthead for me. "Placid and textured" is a good way of describing the original and I think that quality is really missing here. Also I didn't feel like any of the new characters or background extras particularly looked like Mike Judge designs. If the mooted King of the Hill revival ends up happening I really hope it doesn't look like this.

Other than that big asterisk though, I found it pretty fun and charming. Definitely more of a scattershot TV-movie affair than Do America was and it loses steam towards the end, but it did get some big laughs out of me and I actually found some of the character stuff with Beavis pretty sweet. It was interesting that they chose to literally transport the characters from the 90s to the 2020s whereas the last revival just went with an unspoken floating timeline approach. I'm guessing that the upcoming new episodes are going to just revert to the status quo again rather than committing to the time-jump idea and featuring aged-up versions of the supporting characters, but who knows.

Nice to see Daria again.

I loved it. I watched Do America again straight after and I think I genuinely prefer this new one.

I watched this recently. Way more fun than it had any right to be.
Loved the bit where they were looking through the telescope.
I'm gonna watch the do america one. Can't remember if I saw that at the time or not.
