Egyptian Feast

I have a soft spot for Inspiral Carpets and that song, so I'm with you. I think they were way too harsh, but it did lead to that exchange about what was playing when they lost their virginity.

It was the funniest episode in a while. Sarah and Taylor on great form.

DrGreggles

I thought the Carpets were OK, and did a few nice-sounding singles, but TIHIF isn't one of them.

I've met Clint Boon though - great name; lovely guy.
Always liked this too:

Is the full episode out for the Pop-Crazed Paupers yet?

I felt that way a little at first.  I think especially after Primal Scream and Taylor lamenting their abandonment of their earlier, more psychedelic sound, I thought that the opening organ riff of This Is How It Feels might be a bit more like it, but I can't really say I had any major problem with what they had to say about it.  I quite like the song, never loved it (I was very much a mulleted metalhead at the time it came out), but never hated it either.

Final part dropped (as the yootdem say) today, so the whole big whopper will be tomorrow.

SteveDave

I still like that Brits 1990 Megamix thing that Jonathan King was in charge of.

They didn't seem to talk about their broader career though, other than that they were shit. Other bands get a "this is rubbish but some of their other stuff is alright" but The Carpets seemed to get a blanket "everything they did was shit" from everyone. As I said, I wasn't expecting much else as they are the sort of band that music journalists love to hate.

shiftwork2

So odd watching the cheery audience swaying along incongruously to TIHIF.

It looks like the video playlist went up earlier in the week.

phantom_power

It took me a long time to properly listen to the lyrics and see what a bleak song it is. I think in my youth I just saw it as an anthem for disaffected people in a Smiths style

Haven't watched it yet but one of Taylor's video collages is up there as "Assorted British TV Detritus, 1990"

SteveDave

Two "Paris 1919" references from Taylor Parkes in this episode.

Taylor's contributions are so dense with references that I even wondered if he deliberately used the phrase 'hard knocks' during the Beats International bit as a nod to Lindy Layton's later band Hardknox, but I've settled on putting that down to me Doing A Neurodivergent.

LordMorgan

Did anyone else think Taylor maybe was over thinking Primal Scream , no doubting Bobby is a tit, and I can definitely do without their stones pastiches. I think moving on up sits uncomfortably on screamadelica. How much of the bands mucky paws are on that album is definitely debatable
But surely records as good as vanishing point and xtrmntr, you have to take at face value

DrGreggles

The only Primal Scream album I can bare is Screamadelica, which probably contains the least amount of Primal Scream.
Vanishing Point and XTRMNTR do nothing for me.

The Inspirals have featured previously, in a 1991 episode, and if memory serves Simon and Sarah gave them an easier ride, or at least were more considered.

Overall a well-chosen episode in terms of artists/songs to discuss.

I really liked both at the time, but I have to confess its been a long time since I've listened to them.  Looking back to Vanishing Point, the band made a big deal in interviews about the influences that went into that album like the film and free jazz etc, which in hindsight made them look like students trying too hard to be fashionable. 'Stars' hasn't aged well.

Oh yeah and naming a track after a Nazi dive-bomber plane doesn't look clever in hindsight either, particularly after putting a Confederate flag on the previous album.

Wow! Will be looking forward to that. Only discovered that song a month ago (and discovered that John Cale did anything at all after VU) and it's in my top 10 already, magnificent.

I actually love Stuka, is it that controversial a song title?
It's the best song on the album for me, that baseline

Stars was released when I was 15 and I loved its lyrics. It got me actually thinking about things. Which In hindsight is cringey. But I was more preoccupied with getting girls to notice me at school

Exterminator and vanishing point definitely stand up , give them a wee re listen

badaids

XTRMNTR is good in general but there is one track that is hilarious and embarrassing.  It's been many years since I listened to it, but it's one where Gillespie attempting to quasi rap out in his weedy voice something about people being 'dumb fucks'.  My mates and I hate listened to that tune many times, there was something inadvertently hilarious about it.

edit:  The song is Pills.

It's two references to the album of the same name rather than that song.

Got as far as Taylor saying the single was 'a desecration of the Beatles' and did a bit of sick, so had to bail. Shame, I thought the 'disturbing public information film' line they started out on had a lot of promise.

Quote from: Norton Canes on June 24, 2022, 04:18:48 PMNo, the Inspirals!

Oh right! Sorry. Bit weird of him to say that, though, as This Is How It Feels sounds nothing like the Beatles. Whereas that Candy Flip record, well...

phantom_power

Inspiral Carpets are much more influenced by The Doors than The Beatles

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Yep, and countless '60s garage bands. That Farfisa sound is l'essence de Nuggets.

Vitamin C

Loved Taylor on the Candy Flip singer: "He's like a small boy in a historical drama whose one line is: 'soldiers came! they took my father!'"

One of their early songs was a cover of 96 Tears

Chicory

That was a breath of fresh air.  A hitherto untouched year and a well chosen episode.  Just when I'm getting really tired of a Notts slang talking ex porn mag bloke who doesn't care or know much about music beyond old hip hop records somehow hosting a podcast about Top Of The Pops, Sarah and Taylor rescue it.
