I STILL FUCKING LOVE CATS

I have a soft one and as much as my cat hates it, he then sleeps on it rather than in it on his return from the vet. Don't know why, but he finds it a great comfort.

What they need to make is a cat carrier that looks like a cardboard box. The cat would have no problem getting in one of those.

Either that, or a cat box with a computer keyboard inside.

Kankurette

I am dreading having to take Gary to the vet because I live on my own and getting him into his carrier is a two-person job.

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

I have heard that the best way is to put the cat in backwards, so they can't push the box away.

If there are bananas in it, he'll just go on top of them.

I was taking a cardboard box out to the recycling bin the other day, and next-door-but-one's cat turned up to watch. I put the box down on the ground - straight in.

Also if they haven't seen the carrier yet they're a lot less likely to start flailing about when they get near it, so backwards is the way.

Re: "soft" carriers, if your cat is the nervous type remember it's a lot easier to wash piss off a plastic surface than out of some tough fabric. Usually have to chuck mine in the washing machine after each trip to the vet. And the carrier takes a good scrubbing to clean as well!!!

Can anyone recommend oral hygiene stuff for cats which doesn't involve brushing their teeth? Like something they lick up and spread around their gob themselves. Cleo's breath stinks like a rotten arsehole but I fear for my own safety trying to force my way into her mush, sounds like it would be harrowing and savage for all concerned. The internet is as usual a total bewildering ordeal trying to find the right stuff.

Plaque-off, it's basically kelp based breath freshener that goes on their food

My old kitty Frida once had a kip laying on top of a partially constructed Airfix model of a Triumph Herald. You find yourself thinking, "That can't possibly be comfortable."

I can't find my original posts about Sean and Rog, my neighbours' cats who have the run of the stairwell and garden, but it seems I have succeeded in befriending them. After chatting with their owners I now know their real names (and that they are indeed both boys and I hadn't been misgendering them), and while they aren't really called "Sean" and "Rog" and they're not really Bond cats I do now have a License To Treat. Been told they're trying to get them socialised with the residents and gave me some treats to encourage them. Also learned they're not actually kittens, just juvenile cats who are closer to a year old but so smol they don't look it, so giving them the odd Dreamie now and then won't cause them to abandon their owners for us.

Tried giving them a couple of Dreamies today. "Rog" was all "Dreamies? Oh how original *sigh* oh go on then" while "Sean" behaved as if I had a nice big bag of crack cocaine and tried to lick every last atom of Dreamie off my hand. Then he tried to climb into my bag. Then he tried to pounce on the spot where Rog's Dreamie had been seconds before he ate it, and then mewled pathetically at Rog before giving him a little smack and a tiny wimp fight ensued. I'm not sure what Sean was trying to achieve there, I think he was just angry that Rog didn't immeidately regurgitate the Dreamie and give it to him. Rog seems to be amusingly full of disdain for his stupid brother, is it common for a pair of cats to include a smart one and a dumb one?

...so, I've got some part-time cats now! Going to be very sparing with the treats, don't want them expecting something every time they see me, unless it's attention. We're already at a stage where they'll both give me a little boop and let me stroke them, treats or no. Got to admit it's wonderful having some cute animals to greet me when I go out and come home, in lieu of a dog at least. Not seen any mice since the cats arrived either, which is a huge plus.

Blue Jam

Does anyone know why Dreamies do a cheese flavour? I thought cats weren't supposed to eat cheese (or dairy in general). Where did they acquire this taste for mouse food?

In my experience mammals just love fat and rich foods. I've given my cat butter, squirty cream, oat milk, loads of shit.

My previous cat once got his head stuck in a tin of empty baked beans because he loved the juice. Cats are strange.

Perhaps it's like one of those anti-anxiety doggo beds:

The idea is that doggos can nestle in them and feel surrounded and safe. Dunno if cats have a similar nesting instinct.

Kankurette

I've got a cat bed a bit like that - it was originally Dougie's as his old bed was pretty scummy. Sometimes Gary sleeps on it but other times he's happy on a plastic bag.

Whenever I do any baking or cooking with cream in, Gary always looks very interested. I've never given it to him, he must like the smell or something.

One of my part-time cats gave my hand a little headbutt today! The other one got well jel, did a pathetic little meow and dived under my hand to try and steal a bit of attention away. They like me awwww

Having seen many a cat attempt to fit in a cardboard box that can only accommodate a considerably smaller cat and succeed - I think it's safe to say they do.

I'm not spoiling her, a bed next to the tower distracts from the keyboard.

Haven't looked at this thread in a while, but what a beaut! I don't think I've ever actually met a Sphynx. Does she feel like a chamois leather?

All my colleagues' cats have inevitably treated everyone to a close-up paws-free goatse during a Teams call at some point, so can understand the need to lure her away from the keyboard.

That's accurate, feels like hot sweaty chamois, smells like french fries with a hint of mushroom.

fuckin spoilering this one

Spoiler alert
Oscar died about an hour ago.  He had his tea, came to sit on my lap, had a fit and he was gone.  Heart attack or a stroke.  We were with him when he left.  He wasn't scared and he wasn't in any pain.  He was our best friend.

We nearly lost him two years ago, he had to go on special renal food and potassium supplements, he stabilised and then got better, though he stopped going in the garden, he probably felt vulnerable, though he'd come and sit on a warm paving stone sometimes.  I'm relieved that we never had to see him go down again, I hated seeing him robbed of his vitality.  He was 16, and he got two more years than anyone expected.

Bloody hell sorry Gregory. Happened to me two years ago and the trauma of seeing it still hasn't left me.

Very long life though and he looks like he was pretty pampered so can't say better than that.

Kankurette

RIP Oscar. At least he died peacefully, although I accept that's a small consolation. And that's a pretty good innings for a mog with health problems. (Also, what a hunk!)

Crenners

Very sorry to hear this, Greg. What a beautiful little fella. Sending hugs to you mate. Terrible thing to go through. X

Alberon

Thoughts are with you. It's always traumatic when they go, but you can take consolation in his age and quick passing. To be honest you can't hope for more than that.
