Richard Herring getting twitchy in lockdown: 2020

I can watch Burr talking to Herring, oddly. But get Burr in the same room as Rogan and it is fucking dreadful.

I like Burr's stand-up, even when he is being all Libertarian, and he is good on chat shows. But he definitely lacks that sense of subtle irony that seems to dog some American comedians. He seems to genuinely think Herring is interested in him playing Fitzy.

I thought the Burr one was pretty good.  Dunno if they both meditated or something before they hit record, but they were chilled enough to almost have chemistry even.  I expected it to be 90% Herring Hugh Granting it up as he spends five minutes trying to frame a basic question. He did do plenty of that, don't get me wrong, but it didn't seem to bother his guest much.  Bill Burr is definitely a different person since becoming a father and spending more time with his classically liberal wife than the Tough Crowd types with whom he used to kill time.

EDIT:  Was a nice, warm, damp feeling finding out that Burr is a Sanders guy, by the way.

But Bill (and Stanhope sometimes) is the only one who ever pulls Joe up on his bullshit. On his recent appearance on JRE he ripped the piss out of Rogan for thinking face masks were "for bitches" and told him he could never take up rollerblading because his knuckles would drag on the ground. He's one of the only comedians who doesn't suck up to him for fear of his clout in the LA scene. (The second half of the podcast is just two middle aged men talking about cars, I'll give you that.)

I think Bill has been on his best behaviour since getting called out last year for a few awkward podcast appearances. I enjoyed Redbar's coverage:

Halfway through the Burr interview and I'm rather enjoying it. It's refreshing to hear a new voice on the podcast - RHLSTP can often be a bit of an echo chamber.

Interesting to note that Herring, the script editor for season three of Little Britain, makes a couple of mental gymnastics to excuse the blacking up in that series.

I watched part of Burr's recent Joe Rogan appearance but after 45 minutes I saw there was still over two hours to go and couldn't face it.

EDIT: Herring must've been itching to tell his one and only fight story when the subject of street brawls was brought up.

Marc Maron is particularly bad for this. He almost always takes obvious bits of subtle irony at face value, it's as if he can't appreciate a joke unless its blatantly signposted. And this isn't just when he's interviewing British people, he doesn't seem to get wry absurdity at all.

Anyway, I don't know much about Burr, but I thought he came across as an amusing and affable guy during that chat. I enjoyed the bit where, in response to Herring's standard sex robot question, he basically described the premise of Humans, the show that inspired Herring's question in the first place (Burr obviously hasn't seen Humans, he just extrapolated the inevitable outcome of sexy lifelike androids living among us).

I liked the Burr interview. I think video chat suits both of them. Burr of course made fun of Herring a few times ("I don't remember playing the Royal Albert Hall") but that's just what he does. I doubt Burr's toned down anything, frankly. It's just a different setting.

It could have been edited down into a very decent interview, but they rambled far too long about cars and animal death and the like.

That's nice, I didn't know that. Sanders seemed to generally have a lot of success in breaking through to people in the Burr/Rogan region of the political spectrum - the kind of people who are generally contemptuous of liberalism, vaguely sympathetic towards libertarian ideals and somewhat susceptible to "common sense" reactionary lines of thought, while also being much more capable of engaging in good faith with socialist and anti-imperialist arguments than, say, those in the ever-shrinking professional class Democratic base who have simply internalised all of the core assumptions and psychological safeguards of neoliberalism. Engaging the former group electorally could have helped a lot in forming the progressive coalition needed to defeat Trump and decisively re-orientate the course of American politics in the decades to come, but I guess now we'll just have to rely on the DNC's hand-picked segregationist war hawk tough-on-crime rapist to do the job instead.

Incidentally, if Richard Herring was American he would 100% be a Warren guy.

Or possibly even Buttigieg.  The way he responded to Burr's Sanders talk with 'what we need is someone younger' was super blue-ticky.  Their age and irrelevant, unachieved traits are obviously far more important than policies.

sutin

Good to see he's blocked Glinner. There's not enough people in the comedy world standing up to him, and to be honest I never thought Herring would. Fair play.

Puce Moment

Mate, this week Herring stood up to fucking Emma Kennedy by interviewing Robert Webb. He gives no shits.

I don't know anything about those two besides their comedy work. I need more details.

They're both bad people so you'd think they'd get on

Kiri Pritchard-McLean comes over brilliantly in the latest one. I don't know if I bothered with her last appearance because that podcast sounds shit, and I've only otherwise heard her hosting bad Radio 4 comedy.

I'm not sure why he's streaming these but only putting them on YouTube months later, but this one particularly now feels ancient. There's no mention of the article she wrote recently about terrible men in UK comedy, and Rich goes on a pre-emptively self-defensive monologue towards the end without specifically addressing his part in Little Britain. He also talks explicitly about Graham Linehan being a cunt on Twitter, which is another story that's developed significantly since the recording.

I only know her from her offensively bad Newsjack monologues, so I'm shocked to hear that she is capable of being funny. One particular scathing put-down of well-respected political provocateur, Steve Brookstein, sticks in my memory.  "I bet he's a laugh at parties". Brutal stuff. But it was about time Brookstein was knocked off his pedestal.

I will listen, but if this turns out to be a sick prank, watch your back.

AKNF is great, don't know what you're talking about.  Kiri does just seem to leak material from every pore, between AKNF, standup and writing for Tarot she's got a lot of great stuff.

I can see why her better stuff would be constrained by Radio 4 though.

Rachel Fairburn is also great is a deadpan 'sick of your shit mate' kind of way.

ASFTSN

All Killa No Filla is good, but I don't really care about true crime any more at this point. Could listen to those two talking shite for ages though, they're both hilarious. Wish I had caught one of the Covid Arms shows.

paruses

Saw KPM at the Mach Festival last year and she was fantastic. Was hoping to see Rachel Fairburn this year but, well, that flu stopped it. Haven't listened to AKNF  for ages because of tiring of True Crime but that's almost incidental to the two of them talking so should get back into it as it became more about the things they were up to and their lives.

That's the end of this post.

I've not listened to AKNF because I don't want to listen to a comedy podcast about real life people being murdered. Add that to her sketch group being hilariously named after someone who murdered people, plus Newsjack, I was surprised to find her thoughtful, considered and likeable.

I didn't say she was funny, though, Joe. You've got no claim against me for that.

When Bernie was "endorsed" by Joe Rogan (who basically said he would consider voting for him) it was made into a big scandal. You're absolutely right in what you say, but there was no way the establishment was ever going to let it happen so it's a moot point.

Uh anyway back on topic. All Killa No Filla is great stuff, but I much prefer Rachel.

sutin

The 3 parter of All Killa No Filla on Fred and Rose West was really good. I should listen to more.

Pink Gregory

Well there's a 6 parter on Peter Sutcliffe if you want!

Fuck me the Fred and Rose one is hard going.

paruses

I found their Moors Murders one really tough and I can listen to most things with almost sociopathic detachment if I choose (and it's not about a dog or something)

The trend of putting stuff on Youtube several months after it was streamed elsewhere is also shared by Iain Lee and I can only assume that it's to fool people into thinking there is more "new" product than is really the case, or Twitch has some clause of exclusivity for a certain length of time.

MojoJojo

I'm not a big twitch fan or know a huge amount about it but it's pretty common for twitch gamers. Youtube is good as advertising to draw people to a twitch stream (and provide a small income), and the twitch stream is much better at getting money out of people.

Although twitch gamers are often streaming for 8 hours a day and the youtube videos tend to be highlights, and I'm not sure it really works for these scheduled interviews.

Puce Moment

Interesting interview with Acaster on the latest RHLSTP. This often happens with multiple interviews - they can get off boring subjects and just chat.

Really lovely and effervescent advert from Walliams after a few minutes which I have to admit got a big laugh from me.
