Trailer for the movie based on Weird Al's life written/produced by Weird Al.

I really like Daniel Radcliffe and reckon this could be good fun. Big fan of Weird Al for his music, and various appearances on Comedy Bang Bang tv/podcasts. Just seems like a thoroughly nice and positive guy really. Rainn Wilson is playing Dr Demento.

Just gonna be on "Roku Channel" so not some big release or owt.

DrGreggles

Yeah, Weird Al is great.
UHF is criminally underrated.

phantom_power

I like Weird Al as a personality without really being arsed about his musical comedy. I am glad he exists even if I don't listen to him

I think Radcliffe is a really good comic performer so it seems like a good fit and I am looking forward to this. He is great in Miracle Workers

The Bumlord

Fucking hell D-Rad is absolutely ripped in that shirt-off clip.

Yep, Guns Akimbo was a daft, fun romp too.

QDRPHNC

He's great, just watched UHF not that long ago after RLM did their Re:view. I saw Weird Al perform at some casino out in the middle of nowhere, great night.

No idea if Al yanks is ripped, but love the idea that Radcliffe henched up just because it would be funny to play a non shredded guy as ripped to bits

dead-ced-dead

Daniel Radcliffe is one of my favourite comedic performers right now, and his choice of films and television are so wacky and peculiar that his casting as Weird Al makes perfect sense.

Full trailer is out:

I already had a feeling this would be quite good, but it might actually be great. The Madonna bit especially made me laugh

Neomod

Is that an in joke with Scottie Aukerman playing yet another cop.

Oh I get it now, it's a parody of a Weird Al Biopic.
No Fat Al yet though...

You're missing the point which is that, shit or not, this is going to have people praising Radcliffe and therefore boil Graham Linehan's piss so hard he'll have piss-steam shooting out his ears.

Famous Mortimer

I enjoyed UHF, but his actual songs are almost all shit. You get the joke in the first ten seconds (or, just from the title), then it just carries on for another three minutes.

I liked his song about Santa going postal.

A friend of mine drew a similar conclusion. He said Al seems like a lovely man the idea of whom made him laugh but that he just didn't find his work all that funny.

Come on that a bit ungenerous.  Ebay is still a great listen and a masterclass example of how to tuck in observations into another thing.

This used to be my line, but I've too many exceptions to the rule that I can't really say it honestly anymore. I think the time I went for a walk with "I Think I'm a Clone Now" playing on repeat was when I accepted my basicity.

But yeah, I've always found Al's career path and longevity interesting subjects in their own right, so I'm really looking forward to this, even if it's a hyper-fictionalised joint.

Twilkes

I would pay money to see this in the cinema. It's like a hyper-Hollywood version of Wrong Way Down A One Way Street.

up_the_hampipe

There's a bit more to his songs than just one joke that's not worth hearing after a few seconds, but I did only really find them funny when I was a kid. That said, I do think Don't Download This Song (which was, at least for a time, only available by download) is genuinely good.

Weird Al sceptics might get more from his genre/band parody songs, where he writes his own tunes as affectionate, well-observed parodies of other artists.

Good examples (though YMMV):
Genius In France (Zappa parody)
Dare To Be Stupid (Devo parody)
Everything You Know Is Wrong (They Might Be Giants parody)

I suppose a criticism of his band parodies is that you might not get much from them if you don't have a decent knowledge of the source artists.

Also shout-out to the song and video White And Nerdy - parodying Ridin' Dirty.

The Culture Bunker

I do think his 'I Lost on Jeopardy' (parody of Greg Kihn Band's 'Jeopardy', which was a huge US hit but did next to nothing here) is really good. Better than the Kihn original, even.

Mark Mothersbaugh claimed to be genuinely impressed with Dare to be Stupid, saying something to the effect of it being more Devo than Devo.
First World Problems is a pretty good Pixies pastiche
I've mentioned on the forums before that I'm a sucker for his polka medleys ("Polkas on 45" was my introduction to the aforementioned Devo). I had a friend at school who was similarly inclined and we used to stink up house parties by hijacking the cd players with a compilation disk of them.

Ron Superior

I think it's best to think of him as a kind of goofy uncle who you grow to learn is actually cooler than you thought. Yeah, in the surface it's the parody songs, but some of them have more to them than others, then there's things like the ridiculous grossness and violence in UHF, the awesome music vid he directed for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, playing various weirdos for Tim & Eric, jamming with the Roots on an MF Doom cover, joining Reggie Watts and Kid Cudi as bandleader on CBB, being chosen by Godspeed You Black Emperor to play their ATP. And now getting Harry Potter to follow up playing a farting corpse with a boner and a horse fucker to play you in a fake biopic. At some point you just got to give it up for the guy.
