How do you feel after watching Goodfellas?

RIP Ray Liotta.
Generally, I feel exhilarated after watching it. It is my favourite film. It is brilliant.
But I first think:
Why is he moaning? He's lived totally selfishly for his entire life and betrayed all his friends and escaped all punishment as a result. Now he gets an expensive house and still he moans simply because his life is duller than it was.
Is this a normal reaction?

Martin Van Buren Stan

Not sure about the thread question but it is a brilliant film. Arguably the most entertaining in history. Fuck anyone who says Casino is better. It fucking isn't.

Virgo76

Agreed. Some people apparently mix up the two.
This is mad. Goodfellas is miles better than Casino or The Irishman.

You pick out any random five minutes of it and be entertained.

I think the idea is that he's learned absolutely nothing.

It's the same as Dead Poet Society, in a way

A theme common in Scorcese films really.

Does he though? He says he's in reduced circumstances, which is true.

He does moan.
And his new house looks ok

Fantastic film, but at the end, I always think back to a memory of watching it with my not-quite-all-there-upstairs mother, who freaked out in the final shot, the one where Pesci is shooting his big ole gun right down the camera.

She thought there were men at the living room window, shooting it through.

So not quite the effect Scorsese MAY have intended, I'll grant you.

It was actually. Not your mum specifically.
Scorsese (Total Film 1997): "We decided to have Joe shooting directly at the camera as the Sid Vicious song started to play, mainly because I'd been reading about people watching my films with old, often infirm, parents. I thought that if would be fun to confuse some of these older people, and shot it in such a way that anyone with even a touch of dementia, or that elderly confusion, would suddenly panic and think Tommy DeVito was shooting at them. I remember Bobby's (De Niro) mum watching the preview at his Tribeca studio and soiling herself. It made Ray sick."

It is kind of. Weren't Hollywood films in about the mid-20th century banned from showing people shooting guns straight at the camera for the precise reason that it did freak people out?

(Not as good as Kalowski's post but I thought somebody should step in to stop things getting too silly.)

It's so good it can make you think you like gangster films when in actual fact you just like Goodfellas (and to a lesser extent Scarface).

A bit like how 'Amelie' is so good it can make you think you like womens films.

what the fuck does this mean

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

I've never watched Amelie because of the shitty little cheeky face she's doing on the cover. It puts me off.

Totally agree, goodfellas all the way, rewatched casino only last month, after also recently watching Goodfellas, and it's quite a bit short

I think Goodfellas is pretty much the perfect movie for me.
It's also interesting when I watch docus on Henry Hill, what a snivelling little runt he is, Liotta's superb portrayal seems very flattering after seeing and hearing the real Henry

It's an absolute masterpiece. It's deliriously entertaining, incredibly well made on every level and also insightful about certain human behaviour and its consequences. What more do you want?

I entirely agree.
Just wondering what conclusions people drew from the ending.

Just lack of fulfilment from leading a dishonest lifestyle.

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.

Is that the sort of thing you're after?

Dunno if this is weird or not but I don't really feel much after a Scorsese film other than generally entertained. I kind-of feel he's shown and told all he's needed to and there's often not that much to dwell on. His films can be quite affecting in the moment but they generally don't rattle around in my head much afterwards like some directors films can.

Why couldn't Liotta make it as a leading man after this? Bad agent?

Dyl Spinks

I usually felt exhausted, and my teenage self just wanted to watch it again. Great end credits, too.

Must break out the blu ray again soon. Been a few years.

jobotic

It's much better than Casino but I've seen it a million times and Casino maybe twice and not for years. Quite fancy watching it now.

Quite fancy watching Mean Streets too but my video won't play on anything I own.

My conclusions have changed as I've got older. As a teenager I guess I sympathised with him at the end because it had been such a good ride, but obviously as you get older you realise what violent cowardly self-pitying scumbags they all are. Weird that you don't really pick up on that when you're younger. Or at least I didn't.

Why couldn't Liotta make it as a leading man after this? Bad agents/advice?
