I read that account and I felt very sorry for that person. Obviously there is something else going on that should have been addressed prior to gender reassignment surgery. I hope they can get the help they need and try to live a normal life.

But there are people who are all fucked up from plastic surgery gone wrong. There are people who've suffered skin and blood infections because a tattooist didn't know what they were doing. We haven't banned those forms of (semi) permanent body modification. We don't say "you must be mentally ill if you want to do that to yourself, therefore we won't let you for your own good". Instead we trust that a legal adult, in possession of all the information about the risks and ramifications, can make that decision for themselves. And I'm pretty sure that trans people know, and specialists/therapists tell them, about the risks and ramifications of GRS.

Admittedly I had to point out FT was nearly 30 years ago, and had to explain beforehand who Linehan is (he'd never heard of The IT Crowd or Motherland either). Privately, it's understandable that he may have inflated how savage FT was towards the Church. But, and have to admit I honestly don't know, wonder if any (presumed) satirical intent came from Mathews or, having originated the character as "Father Trendy" on RTE's doomed Scrap Saturday,  Morgan himself, and Linehan's intolerant nature has actually always been present.

It's been mentioned a few times on here before, but the very Irish/Catholic parts of Father Ted mostly came from Mathews, while Linehan (who was more interested in UK/US pop culture) provided a lot of the wackier/pop-cultural stuff. Linehan got more confidence and a louder voice in the second and third series, hence the increased number of film and telly pastiches.

There's lots of suspicious details about that account - the account looked very much like one that'd been scrubbed and repurposed (and is now gone, as is The Times article covering it...). The lived experience of people I know vs. this one narrative is very different.

And it sucks that doubt should be applied to any detrans story, but considering they're being weaponised against transitioning at all, it's needed.

And I'm pretty sure that trans people know, and specialists/therapists tell them, about the risks and ramifications of GRS.

Oh yes. Two sign-offs by medical doctors, including at least one detailed psych assessment. Then, like other surgeries, you speak with the surgeon beforehand and they run you through what'll happen and the risks etc. All with substantial periods of time between each one. There's simply no way they weren't informed of what was going on, so claiming ignorance that they'd be castrated is bananas.

I don't want to speculate too much, I'm cis, I don't know. But there's bound to be at least one person who believes that transitioning will solve whatever is going on with them mentally and emotionally, and it doesn't, because that wasn't the problem, it was something else. I'm uncomfortable with calling bullshit on a story like that. I will happily call bullshit on the idea that we should prevent people from accessing GRS based on one anonymous Twitter account that was given prominence by the world's biggest TERF.

There have been so many points at which they should have had their 'are we the baddies?' moment but they just keep getting worse. I know there probably have been a few who just slink off but there never seems to be any fewer because the big players are the loudest and the worst of all of them and their numbers are artificially inflated with bots. I have no doubt they'll lose in the long run but the set backs along the way will cost lives.
