Alpha Papa, In the Loop and other comedy filums on Netflix.

Just a heads up, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa and In the Loop have popped in on Netflix UK & Ireland in the last couple of days, also Airplane! and The Great Outdoors... dunno if any of 'em are new additions, possibly not. The Naked Gun has been available for a while.

Bloodbath at the House is still currently on there (thread here!).

Alpha Papa gets a bit of a bad rap but I think it's great fun - worth it for the last gag involving Michael, at the very least.

I was thinking only yesterday about when Alan's lying wounded on the pier and staring at the seagull overhead when Lynn tries to close his eyelids thinking he's died. Possibly the loudest I've ever laughed in a cinema.
"What are you doing? I was watching it fly off."

"They've shot me to bits, Lynn."

Worth it for "You've got your fog lights on. There's no fog."

Actually rewatched Alpha Papa a day or two ago and although it is a bit ropey plot-wise there are some good fun bits aren't there.

Alan clattering Simon with the fire extinguisher and saying "You step to me??"

The way he's singing "coconut" to himself while looking at porn in the shed.

Lots of silly little bits.

Edit: "That's my damn todger"

His gradually crestfalling face as he desperately flicks through the channels trying to find the news report on himself to make his 'cool' line to Angela work.

It's broad and daft but full of jokes, just like IAP2, and similarly divisive apparently.
A fair bit of it had to be rushed and written on the fly, which I think was also the case with IAP2.

The Lurker

I think Alpha Papa is the weakest of all Partridge material which is a shame but it does have its moments.

My particular favourite bit:
Police officer: [reading from transcript of radio conversation]  01:00 Partridge: I wish this was abroad because it would make a brilliant 'Banged Up Abroad'
Farrell: What's 'Banged Up Abroad'?
Partridge: You don't know 'Banged Up Abroad'?
Farrell: No
Partridge: Everyone knows 'Banged Up Abroad'
Farrell: I don't, what is 'Banged Up Abroad'
Partridge: You seriously don't know 'Banged Up Abroad'? You have to be shitting me
Farrell: I've never even heard of 'Banged Up Abroad'

Policewoman : Just get to the bit where they stop saying 'Banged Up Abroad'

*skips a few pages*

Police officer: Sidekick Simon: I once banged up a broad
Partridge: That's the best you've got, even with a gun to your head?

Policewoman: He's got a gun to his head?

Apparently Brendon Gleeson backed out of the "Pat" role because there was no actual script. It seems mad that something on this scale wasn't tightly planned and plotted.

Alpha Papa is by far my least favourite Partridge thing. I think it's very, very bad. I'm always surprised by the warm reception it gets on here.

Alan just doesn't act like Alan, talk like Alan or look like Alan in it. It's like they took a script for an unrelated film, changed the location to Norfolk and plopped a few characters from the Partridge universe in it.

Cuellar

I like the 'banged up abroad' business but I've always found the plot point it's in service of to be poor.

They already know Pat's got a gun, and I believe he's already threatened to shoot some hostages, so why is it urgent news that he's got a gun to Simon's head?

I would say it's the least consistent IAP+ stuff but loads of it makes me laugh: the Welsh one night stand woman, thought you were a pile of clothes, driving to the police station for 3 seconds. Haven't seen it for a few years now so looking forward to it.

Twonty Gostelow

When he's trying to elbow his way into a party conversation with his new manager who's talking about how brilliant The Godfather is. "Amazing acting..."
AP: I tell you what's even better than the acting - a lot of people are shocked when I say this - the camera angles.

I think it gets off to a great start and even the onset of the siege is well done with some genuine tension. Then it broadens into something sillier and over the top as the police get involved, and you either sit back and enjoy the daft gags or not.
