Josie Long is doing stand-up on Radio 4, starts in 10 minutes.  Sorry for the short notice, only just discovered it.  Should be good, I've liked her since the days of Whose Line is it Anyway.

Bigfella

Hold on, this is a different woman.  Who was I thinking of, the one with the glasses?

Bigfella

Thanks mate, that's right.  Lawrence.  She's better than the Josie that's on just now, to be honest.

I remember when Josie Long first appeared 15 or so years back and received a mixed reception on here to put it mildly (different times, and in many cases different posters) I thought they were talking about Josie Lawrence and was wondering where all the vitriol for someone who I remembered as a pretty uncontroversial WLIIA regular who'd been out the spotlight for a while was suddenly coming from.

Bigfella

I haven't really got anything against her, it's just a case of 'thanks but no thanks'.  Material about mums drinking gin and 'when I was pregnant society actually praised me for gaining weight'.  Stuff that's been done for years by the Apollo- panel show mob.  She seemed so pleased with her own jokes, though to be fair it was just after covid restrictions were lifted.  Could have been much worse, I'd rather listen to her than say, Gervais.

I still don't know which Josie was on Radio 4 tonight after reading the above, but I like both of them.

She's good. Clever, funny and pleasant.
Cooked and Bombed have a poor record regarding her though:

I'm one of the 'not for mes' I'm afraid. She ticks all the boxes but just has an unbearable smugness of being. Not just her - I have the exact reaction to her occasional cohorts Robin Ince and Brian Cox (the science one).

But then I seem to be terrible at reading the room - many people here seem to think, as an example, Tim Key is nasty and punches down, whereas I always see him as a Captain Mainwaring character - hugely pompous, but ultimately low staus.

I'm not sure either of those really sum up Tim Key. Captain Mainwaring's issue is class. He hates the fact the posher Wilson floats through life with such apparent ease. Tim Key doesn't seem like that. He's not obviously pompous or class-obsessed. I'm not really sold on his poetry but he's genuinely talented.
I've probably taken you too literally.

Are there any recordings of Josie Long prior to her university days, especially the BBC comedy award she won? I'm guessing it was all pre-Web2.0 and iPlayer...

Do they?

I like Josie Long's stuff, so thanks for letting me know this was on.

Poor man/woman's Holly Walsh.

I think she seems like a jolly nice person. I would like to hang out with her and talk about The Wedding Present and such like.
But I don't really find her funny.
I think that's the thing with alot of the modern comedians recently. I bet they're the kind of people you'd enjoy being around but you don't want to watch their standup/TV shows/whatever. Whereas in the past the opposite was often the case.

EDIT- I loved Josie Lawrence. She was one of my first crushes growing up when I would be allowed to stay up and watch Whose Line Is It Anyway. She was/is great.

I've enjoyed Josie every time I've been to see her.  She still has a mad energy and unique flights of fancy; I can sort of understand why her delivery is an acquired taste, but then I've enjoyed Robin Ince's standup so that's a death sentence for my opinions on CaB.

It's not 2005 any more, so you're probably alright.

Does anyone have the clip of Josie Long that went (semi) viral on twitter called something like "the worst stand up of all time"?

It's either about having Corbyn fever or Jedward, I remember seeing both bits online but can't recall which earnt the aforementioned award...

Not to be a hater (both bits are not funny over a 2 min clip but who cares)

It's just that this vid has been fizzing round my brain for a while yet can't find it anywhere online

Mr Trumpet

I saw Josie Long today and can report that she was quite amusing. Had a good line about why she was a socialist and not a communist, the latter involving too much reading. Plenty of sharp self-deprecation in between the earnest bits.

Here's the "Corbyn Fever" bit...

Absolutely brutal stuff.

Given how this forum has caused Josie so much anxiety (god knows why some of those old threads are still up. They're disgusting and I'm surprised the police never got involved), I think people would be wise to lay off the negativity.

The fuck is going on in this thread?
