Title: Mega Drive Mini!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: madhair60 on April 01, 2019, 01:48:21 PM
It's a very small Mega Drive!!! And it has all Mega Drive games on it!!!!!!!

Now, these games have generally been fairly easy to come by on the re-release front, but HANG ON A SEC, it's got Castlevania: Bloodlines in its first re-release ever! And FUCK MY BACKCHOPS it's got Earthworm Jim!

ALSO Sonic, Comix Zone, yada yada.

Oh yippie, yet another re-release of the same old Megadrive games (and a couple of newbies).  40 titles;  far less than the number of roms that Sega could include, nay should include, for a whopping £100 or so.  This thread's title is completely unworthy of thirteen exclamation marks.

Also, unless Sega have managed to get EA involved and games such as Road Rash II and Jungle Strike are included, then this is an instant write off.  Also see Disney with Aladdin.  No Megadrive collection is complete without those classics.

Hm, wonder how it'll compare to the Atgames crap...

It's be night and day in terms of emulation and game selection, I should imagine.

Yawn.... wake me up when Saturn Mini is announced...

Damn straight.  I'm not sure that it'll ever happen, as the Saturn is notoriously difficult to emulate but that's preciously why I'd be all over a Saturn Mini, were Sega to ever release one.

Not having a go just curious : what's the motivation behind getting this over running roms on a computer? Are you just good people? The 16bit stuff seems to run real well on said

Indeed.  Even my toaster can run Megadrive games flawlessly.

I'm going to wager that it's mainly "can't be arsed to set things up" and wanting to plug something into the TV easily.

See, I get that but £100+ of "can't be arsed" is where the logic behind it fails me.  The consumer base I 100% completely understand this appealing to are the people who have no concept of what emulation is or how to do it themselves.  I can't fathom anyone with the technical knowhow wanting to waste their money on this, unless they're rich.  Still people do and it's not really my place to judge.  Each to their own, I guess.

I have the technical know-how, but a raspberry pi 3, plus sd card, plus two decent USB game controllers is going to be up around $100, plus the time to set it up, to get the roms, to make sure everything is running ok, ongoing maintenance, plus having a ugly bunch of wires around the TV... although to be fair, I wouldn't be arsed buying the Mini Megadrive either. Retro gaming is for suckas.

Fair points, I suppose.  Still, if someone did go the Raspberry Pi route, then they'd be able to emulate multiple systems and effectively have access to an infinite number of games.  There's going to be a lot more wires and a lot less games if someone buys a mini version of every console.

I have a PS Classic (which I modded to run any game including Megadrive ones), it was actually bought for me and I doubt I'd have bought one at full price otherwise so there's the "good present for nerds" factor. I'd probably  have bought one when the prices plummeted though - it's a neat little package.  Tech geekery and nostalgia, basically - there's no real utilitarian argument when an emulator on the PC or Mac will do the job without having to "hack" against the manufacturer's wishes, or a Pi3 etc.

I got my sister a Pi 3, a brilliant little case that looks just like a mini Mega Drive, and some USB replica MD joypads. Not only could I put all the games we used to play when we were little on there, I also got it to run Atari ST games. It's amazing and I wish I'd kept it. But it was a lot of work getting it all to run flawlessly and I still find myself quite tempted by an official version. Sega Saturn Mini however would be a day one purchase.

It's on point though because as I previously said, it's a notoriously difficult console to emulate.  I had a go last year on my PC and whilst I was able to get Sega Rally running, the sound was completely fucked (and as with most games, the sound of that game is half the experience).  I never owned a Saturn but there's loads of games from that console that I'd love to play (with the Holy Grail being Panzer Dragoon Saga).

I'm not trying to impress anybody by saying that I'd love to see a Saturn Mini (I'm not even sure how you think that would be an attempt to impress somebody - "I'm aware of the existence of a famous videogame console... um, yeah.  Go me!").  I'm being genuine because for the foreseeable future, it would be the only way to experience a whole bunch of games that I want to play, without using eBay to shell out a small fortune for an actual console and some very rare games.

Raspberry pi? How but

USB game pad // laptop with megadrive emulator // hdmi lead // telly

Surely that's the same amount of suff as this megadrive mini? Most people would only have to buy a lead? I'm not being a miserable cunt, just why people gotta buy a load of new crap? You're a five pound USB controller and a cable away from every 8 and sixteen bit console running flawlessly with most all of the games everyway and you gotta wait for Sega to hand out its thin gruel to you? Seems crazy to me

I bought second-hand SNES and Megadrive controllers on eBay very cheaply, and the short adapters that were needed to convert them to USB so they'd plug into my computer.

Then a great emulator called OpenEmu which covers most classic consoles/handhelds, and lets you access the various games for each system using nice cover-art menus.

Done.

Every now and then I open it up, plod around on Kirby's Anus Adventure, remember I don't like computer games, and close it down again.

Honestly, all of the fun you can get from computer games you can just get from watching a few minutes of a Let's Play on youtube.  There's no need to spend any money at all.

Sega have been a lot more generous than Nintendo with giving their classic games away for free in the Samsung app store. I already have Sonic, Sonic 2, Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage 2 etc on my smartphone. The official Sega versions. Simple to cast to the TV and the only difference is the lack of an actual Mega Drive joypad. That's not a problem with the Sonics, as A, B and C all do the same thing.

Having the spin dash in the first Sonic game is a very welcome addition.

Like Super Return of the Jedi for the SNES; a great game ruined by being far too difficult for its own good.

I do enjoy a nice console war <3

I am looking forward to the Mega Drive Mini for the hacking potential. A Saturn Mini would also be ace, especially for the unavailability of so many games on it. I know Panzer Dragoon is getting a remaster, but Saga would be nice to have. On a theoretical Saturn Mini I'd like to see Dynamite Deka, Astal, Fighter's Megamix etc. There's plenty of stuff and so much of it hasn't been seen since that brief flicker of life the Saturn had. Samesies for the Dreamcast, a little pocket DC full of those amazing arcade ports would be fantastic.

(Though, I'm yet to encounter a Saturn game that SSF couldn't run?)

I already have several emulators on my PC, but if one of those mini SNESs came up cheap on ebay, I'd be sorely tempted to get it just for the convenience and comfort of playing on the sofa.

I could have sworn there had already been a Megadrive Mini. One of those ones from a few years ago that was just a controller that plugged into the telly. Maybe it wasn't official or something.

Of course, it goes without saying that the Mega Drive was for fartbrains and the SNES was where it's at.

Hey madhair60 I hear Sega are releasing a little box that if you plug it into the telly you can watch the telly.

I hope it has channel 4 and maybe ITV also.

It's only 150 pounds, and I know I can watch telly on my telly but I can't be arsed with the hassle of dragging the telly down from the massive podium I've built in the garden and it's a nice tiny looking little box and when I do a wee poo comes out bloooo lah  blah blah blah waaàaaa ffffffft gribbbbbbbbb

Maybe you should try this, a rebuilt mega drive with modem chips that can scale up to HD with no loss of performance.

It accepts original carts and you can't put ROMs on it. Perfect!

It doesn't accept more modern controllers though so as well as the games you'll need an original (not included).

Mega Drive emulation is notorious for failing to reproduce the audio accurately, which has largely contributed to the AIDS-tier bang-wrong moronpinion that the Mega Drive has a bad "sound chip" or bad music.

It's also due to people failing to appreciate the myriad intricacies of FM synthesis. It requires a significant increase of programming talent to get pleasing results from an FM synth. But they can be amazingly expressive and intricate.

Comparatively, beep chips are much simpler to programme, and any cunt can string samples together in a tracker and get them to play in order. (I should know.)

It will take ROMs through an Everdrive flash cart and there will be custom firmware soon enough that allows loading ROMs through the in-built SD card slot.

There's also a 2.4GHz version of the 8bitdo controller that's compatible with it (and the original hardware).

Even in the actual hardware there's a good Mega Drive sound chip that sounds like your balls or clitoris are vital fuckitems, and one that sounds like you've been neutered (depending on the console model)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfNKJlJUXwQ

Enthusiasts sometimes get the old chip modded into the new console. My friend who made Sonic 3 Complete did this.

Mega Drive emulator

SNES EWJ is not a good version. Game feel is wrong and it is missing two levels

Alright then.

Which is better:  Disney’s Aladdin on the original SNES or Disney’s Aladdin on the Megadrive Emulator.

The Mega Drive was a bit bollocks. The Sonics are timeless achievements but there's not much beyond them worth spending time on, especially compared to the treasure trove that is the SNES library.

Now the Sega Saturn on the other hand, mmm.

I do find the "just use an emulator" responses a bit weird, because... I have used an emulator, for about a decade and a half. And now they've made a tiny Mega Drive with the proper pads that I can hack my favourites onto. And I can set it besides the SNES Mini, PS1 Mini, and it's just a convenient and aesthetically pleasing way to play classic games.

What do you think the Megadrive Mini is?  It's an emulator with preloaded roms.  The only difference is that it's an emulator in the shell of a miniature Megadrive, as opposed to the shell of a PC (that can also do a million other things).

I don't think the appeal of the mini consoles is mysterious even for people who know how to emulate. They're cute, they have nice pads, and you can plug em easy-style into yer telly rather than fucking around with computers and that. They are lifestyle.

The only problem with the Mega Drive Mini is that it is a Mega Drive which, well, is no Sega Saturn is it.

Instead of “nice pads” why not get some proper old ones from eBay?

People who buy these dedicated consoles basically have plenty of money to throw away, and lots of display/storage space for tat.  It’s fine to admit it.

Sega released the console as the Mega Drive in Japan in 1988, followed by North America as the Genesis in 1989. In 1990, the console was distributed as the Mega Drive by Virgin Mastertronic in Europe, Ozisoft in Australasia, and Tec Toy in Brazil. In South Korea, the systems were distributed by Samsung as the Super Gam*Boy and later the Super Aladdin Boy.[c]

You've made a common but understandable mistake there. The name wasn't a reference to the console's prodigious height, but to the fact it was Nintendo's 64th games system. The first 52 dating back to the company's origins as a playing card manufacturer.

I can't lie, the moment I saw one of those in Sega Pro magazine, I was begging my mum for one. The good news (for her) is that it never released outside of Japan.

The design has held up pretty well, but I've never been a fan of the power and reset buttons and the moulding around them. They remind me of something you'd get on one of those obscure mid-90's Bandai or Tomy consoles that had like 5 FMV anime schoolgirl games released on it before being discontinued.

If you do have actual Mega CD games, you can play them on Kega Fusion by putting them in your PC's CD drive, which I was amazed by. Works really well too.

The real beauty in that terradrive is what appears to be a Sega Branded IBM Model-M keyboard variation.
Sorry to be a cut-rate buzby on this one, but that keyboard has ALPS switches. It's not a buckling spring keyboard like the Model M.

Is it beautiful? Yes. And I speak from authority, as this is my main keyboard:

Because if they aren’t connected your system is only an 1 bit system rather than an 8 bits one.

There weren't many good games for the Sega Egge-a-Drive but the shoot-'em-up Shellfire is worth checking out, as is the puzzler Krax.  Sport fans may get something out of Poach K College Basketball.  Likewise, fans of war based boardgames may find some entertainment in the videogame conversion of the enduring strategy classic Whisk.

£52 on Amazon.

They look cool, but the presence of Eternal Champions and Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition but only supplying the 3-button pads in the box bothers me so much.

Yes, I know they're the only 2 games that need 6 buttons and the original 3-button pad is more iconic, but have you tried playing Street Fighter II using the start button to toggle between punches and kicks?

I've still got my megadrive and modded a switch to flip it to ntsc/60hz so for me, that £60 would be better put towards a flashcart.

I have OpenEmu emulator for my mac and an original megadrive controller from eBay, and I can download rom files for free of any megadrive games I want.  Amongst other systems OpenEmu also emulates Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Game Gear, Master System, NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Playstation 1 and Game Cube.

Out of interest why is the emulation route so anathema for some people?  Is it that you don't feel people should get this stuff for free, or do you like collecting the physical consoles themselves?

I find that I tend to stick to things more if I have a limited selection.

Don't know, love my Snes mini, I played through Earthbound, Mega Man X and Link to the Past on snes9x a few years previous, played FF6 on the Playstation port years before that, but I'm still eager to play them all again on it.

I suppose it's the curation and not having unlimited possibilities, unless you really strongly want to play a particular thing, in that case emulation is free so...

They are better as gifts than buying them for yourself.  Or if you're not an enthusiast and nostalgia is worth the cost of entry.  Hard to tell what the target market is.  Also it's about as plug and play as you can get.

A lot of people have probably got wii's they can do this in trivially too. Tbh I could probably buy most of the good games I wanted to play for the cost of a flashcart. And I used to play rarer things like snatcher on my modded original xbox, which I stupidly chuked out.

I already have the console and some games, so I would prefer to play it on the genuine article. I doubt I'd bother if I didn't though.

The collectable aspect is totally a factor with these things.

That said, these mini consoles aren't really for anyone other than casual gamers. The ones that aren't going to want to mess around with things too much. Just plug in, switch it on, and off you go, straight out of the box.

Those people won't want to download emulators to their PC or even phone/tablet. Let alone buying a raspberry pi to set up as an emulation console.

Also, licenses expire and get picked up by other companies, meaning some genuinely great games might get lost were it not for emulation.

Plus, not all mini consoles are created equal. The Playstation Mini was particularly substandard.

I remember the fuss over the Neo Geo X handheld that actually was just an emulator that you could download. SNK outsourced manufacture and development to another company for this and were so u happy with it (the emulation was crap and other issues) they sued said company and got the whole thing pulled. There have been other attempts by SNK that have been a little better, one that looks like a miniature cabinet with a tiny screen, and one that is a full arcade-style stick and buttons that plugs into the telly.

I have achieved better results than the official Neo Geo X by getting a chinese handheld (as discussed elsewhere) installing Final Burn Alpha (the arcade emulator that the Neo Geo handheld used) and a full set of roms to a micro SD card. Only thing I'm missing might be the clicky microswitched D-pad the Neo Geo machine had.

No, they're ace. You can hack them easily, pop all the games you want on there (with an attractive menu, boxart, etc) and then have a wee replica of the system with the original pads. Near as damnit to the original without the expense of, well, creaky old Mega Drives.

Yeah I suppose I still have all of my old consoles and in terms of games I'm interested in playing, outside of rarities that are a bit more expensive than I'd want to pay for a 10-15 year old disc, I have enough.

Most people aren't in that situation, and are more likely to be 'oh, a Mega Drive, I used to play on one of those.

I've never known older consoles to go 'bad' with the exception of the NES, thanks to its not-really-zero-insertion-force cartridge mechanism and bad power regulation issues. I've not had a problem with my atari, snes, megadrive or couple of n64's. Optical drives can go bad due to their moving parts but people make things that can replace them entirely with sd cards these days. I keep toying with the idea of buying a dreamcast and fitting it.

I've just upgraded a PS2 network adapter to take SATA drives, out of anxiety that, seventeen years on, the drive'll be on it's last legs soon even if it still reads discs right now. Your post made me think about getting an SD card to SATA adapter (there are some that support multiple cards which look good), but the speed on the hard drive is very good for PS2 games and until SD card prices drop substantially, I shouldn't think about it. The PS2 itself has survived very well, it's all the peripherals that stop working.

Modifying the console has improved it to no end. Games load faster, but I can also plug in my Dualshock 4 to play games, which is helpful when the Dualshock 2 face buttons need hammering down to register (this is the case on quite a few of my controllers, and there's a lot online about them being 'pressure sensitive' which was reduced in the PS3 onward, but I can't remember it ever being this bad - The Getaway is unplayable), and the proprietary controller port means they're going to die eventually. Loading games via the network means I don't even need the hard drive, but I prefer network installing them to it, which is amazingly convenient. Hack your stuff.

Generally speaking, I prefer emulation, but PS2 and up is just constant tweaking and plugin black magic, so it's handy to keep the real consoles there, and emulation is possible on those. Big fan of the mini consoles still, because of the possibility to hack and put Retroarch and any game  from nearly any system on them. The PS Classic is such a disappointment with its own library that you basically need RA to run anything at a decent framerate and make it look nice, and even then it can disappoint you. Yet it's the only mini I have because it's great playing everything else and I love the way it and the digital pads look. It's needless to tinker with that, for me, given the plethora of solutions available, but it's great to mess about with, and the hacks just keep getting better and easier.

If I'm remembering rightly from an Ashens video, only Japan's Mega Drive Mini got the six button pads, but you can probably buy a generic usb one and use it on the Mini easily enough at this point. I was thinking about this official Sega one. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Retro-Bit-Official-6-Button-Controller-Raspberry/dp/B07RZSFGQM) Price is a bit steep, though.

There are "official" pads compatible with the Mini, but even those terrible Blaze things that took old cartridges and ran them poorly, still came with a version of the 6-button pad as standard though. No excuse.
