Woohoo!

Phew! Gleylancer's pretty tricky!

Knock your speed up to 4 during the final phase of the last boss, counter-intuitive, but that extra speed comes in great for misdirecting his balls!

https://streamable.com/ypt4ty

Couple of tips I found on the shmups forum

Keep the stage 5 boss alive and eventually two extra lives turn up!

Also, during stage 6, after the first lot of these green laser gate things

Shoot this bit here after the last one and there's a hidden extend in there too.

bit memo heavy and a bit baggy. The bits where you have to be extra careful and not touch the walls, I can feel those bits taking years off my life, but it's a good game. I liked it, more than happy to see the fucking back of it though, I have to admit.
I played it the other day and lost about 7 lives on that final boss :D Came very close to doing a honks and just tipping everything out the window!

new Eden's game in the works? - https://twitter.com/xxgameroom/status/1452303938921779200

Also, he's put a load of his old games on his itch page - https://xxgameroom.itch.io/

Cotton Reboot steam page is up. Coming next month - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1656820/COTTON_REBOOT/

Will double dip, it's a fun game and I'll play it more on pc.
Very good beginner game (the arrange mode) if you're looking to dive in!

madhair60

Just got sent 100% and Panorama. They're going Cotton berserk at the moment, what with those and Reboot. (which is a bit good, even though the new graphics can be very garish)

Yeah, there's so much coming out, it's hard to keep track!
Rock n roll is like a brand new game, so I'll definitely try that one when it comes.

Chedney Honks

Got the Toaplan Garage Collection or whatever the fuck it's called. Various Tiger this and Tiger that games, JPN eShop. It's proper M2 quality as ever, runs great, feels great, plays well, but pretty old school shit. Probably the worst games I've played in an M2 port but that's still better than 99% of games.

Chedney Honks

Kyukyoku Tiger is pretty good fun, actually. It's a bit of an old school memoriser but feels a little more fluid than that. The enemy bullets are so fast and directed right at you, and you can get walled very quickly, that you kind have to know where they're going to come from next. At the same time, you also get into a bit of a rhythm when you've got some firepower behind you and steady, constant, macro movements can keep you one step ahead. Pretty satisfying power ups and some great bosses, albeit very tough.

Tiger Heli doesn't seem that great to me, pretty generic old-school arcade STG, but I'll play Kyukyoku Tiger here and there.

The Switch port of Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu is very good. Contains all the Black Label and Arrange modes and basically everything else they've ever released for the game. It's perhaps the third or fourth best Dodonpachi game (of four) but another excellent port and hopefully the cunts will do Ketsui, Mushihimesama Futari or Dodonpachi Daioujou soon. Sad in a way that they've ported three B+ tier games rather than the S+++ shit.

Crenners

Can't do the laser wheels in St 5 and can't be arsed memorising anything (in any context, not just computer games) so that's pretty much my limit on every mode, but this is great fun. The various arrange modes are all great and I've 2CC'd everything. The Black Label and Ketsuipachi modes are probably the best shmups on the Switch. Slowdown fuckdown.

Clump, I played a few runs of and really enjoyed Space Moth. Undoubtedly a great game, just not got the capacity these days to get stuck onto more than one thing at a time. I'm far from stuck into DFK either, just played a dozen runs maybe. Anyway, good recommendation, and two years ago I would have been happily grinding away.

That was probably the shoot em up I spent most time on at the aracade back in the day besides R-type and Gradius.

It does feel like a very nice mid point between very strong mechanics and having some more flash to it. Having the vast majority of the enemy firepower aimed at you I think reduces the memory aspect and whilst the upgrade path is long you can make good headway by just having level 3 vulcan with the bombs being powerful enough to get you survive until you get there.

Yes! It's fantastic. With that and Star Hunter, 1ccgames have basically won the year.

You will never beat my score. I am become moth.

Here are some cheesy strats for the last pattern of the stage 4 boss.

Cheers for the clip, I should probably use hyper much more than I do. I've got a DOJ rank management mental block. Set up my stick again with the Switch so I'll give it a bit more time here and there until I can clear it. Seems pretty easy outside those sections but very flashy and fun.

Challenge absolutely not accepted in Space Moth, great skills. I'll give it a go with the stick at some point soon. I've only played with the D-pad but it was still really good fun with that.

😎

I tried Twin Cobra when the M2 announcement came, and I enjoyed it well enough, but not enough to shell out how much they were asking when emulation is perfect already and it's not something I'd play all that much.
I think that was my high score if you want something to beat.

You should try Twin Cobra 2, I 1cc'ed that a few weeks ago, it's nicely chill, good fun. A lot more forgiving than the first game.

Around the same time I discovered a game call Exzisus as well, just firing up something random in mame and it's got bags of style! That was really good fun. It loops once you beat it.

I made a little trailer thing to show the bosses - https://streamable.com/u10ata

and then I played prehistoric isle 2, I think that one got a switch port? That's a lot of fun, and looks fantastic.
The backgrounds look lush, you just want to dive into the ocean.
The slowdown feels really great, especially during the rainforest section, it feels like the wind and rain is pushing you back.

It's good fun and not too hard, it's a fun adventure!

The final boss at the end turns into beakyfuzzblob from blackbird!

Nice one. I did pick up PI2 a couple of years ago when it got a Hamster port or similar, when I got every shmup on the eShop. Lots of personality, great vibe as you say. Tiger M2 ports are expensive for what you get really, no denying it, but I'll get everything they do because of the quality and care. On another note, would love Live Wire to continue their great run with the Cave ports, they've done a solid job albeit with the mid-tier titles. Almost certainly not happening but they seem the best bet for DOJ or Futari ports at this point. Hope their other stuff sold well enough.

Yes, we're getting nearer the crossroads. Were they just porting over the easy stuff for a quick buck, or are they gonna go the extra mile?
Yes, very good ports by all accounts, no performance issues, lag kept down low. You can't ask for more.

I do understand that M2 wanted to start at the beginning with the toaplan stuff, but, I mean, I thought the first release would be a more meaty compilation of the earlier games with a few decent arranges to justify the price.

"13 titles!" It boasts in the press release, what you're actually getting is 3 games and lots of shittier ports of the same two games which nobody asked for.

I mean, look at the Aleste release in comparison. Far better value.

M2's darius cozmic collection came out on pc recently and I haven't spent too much time on that yet, but it's very good - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1638330/Darius_Cozmic_Collection_Arcade/

It was you who got me into playing darius gaiden! I didn't see the appeal of the darius games until I tried that. Played it for a few score competitions so I've had my fill of the easy route but I'm looking forward to diving back in and exploring the rest of the game!

G-Darius HD is coming soon, already have it on ps4, but will buy it again for PC since I'll play it more on there - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1640160/GDarius_HD/

I think this is all contractual obligation, must have been in the contract when Taito hired M2 for the jobs that pc ports would be part of the deal, so I'm not expecting any more M2 goodness, but maybe it wasn't too much of a headache for them and they might consider bringing more games over.
The darius cozmic collection port is very good, ultra responsive and they got all the boring pc shit right.

Crenners

Completely agree about the Tiger release. I didn't actually get the DLC for this one because I don't want CPC464 ports or whatever the fuck. Darius Console stuff was way better because lots of unique games there, SNES and shit, plus arcade variants. Well worth it for me. I totally support Tiger as a labour of love and I've enjoyed it, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend for the price unless you're an M2 simp, and you'd already have it. I'm hoping these releases will get more exciting with the Truxton stuff et al. Feels like a long time til we'll have any shmup surprises from M2, though. Seems this is them for the foreseeable.

Yes, it's a shame that element has been removed. It was always fun getting a nice surprise what their next shottriggers game would be.

Ha! This is brilliant :D

Someone calling themselves "cavedwellers" has just released a fun rom hack of dfk and this text file was in the zip.

"!HAVE A GREAT DECEMBER AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!

TO PLAY:
/ RENAME "sdojak.zip" TO "dfkbl.zip"
/ PLAY IN EMULATOR

I HOPE YOU ENJOY!!

IF YOU DO NOT ENJOY, LOOK FORWARD TO 04/20/22 FOR A FUN BIRTHDAY PRESENT!

- CAVEDWELLERS"

I'm assuming that means the real dump will be released next year.

You can play as hello kitty and they changed the announcer to garfield.

Blitter delay 60%, slowdown feels close enough to me.
The character changes are a definite improvement!
The date in the text file "20/04" is significant because it'll be SDOJ's tenth birthday.

Just acknowledging the replies. I'm absolutely cunted by circumstances but will reply properly another time soon.

That's OK, I know you don't like PC gaming, so you're probably not interested in any of that.
Hope you're doing alright. Don't let the bastards grind you down!

The new Sieger mode for Schildmaid is out.

https://hitp-studio.itch.io/schildmaid-mx

Quote- Play a single, longer, intense stage that tests your mastery of the game's mechanics with situations you would typically only encounter in the later loops of Chimera Mode.
      - A full playthrough will take around 10 minutes.
      - There are separate leaderboards for Sieger Mode.
      - The mode is unlocked by beating Jaeger Mode once (works retroactively as well).

It's bastard hard!
Really good fun though! managed to clear it today, but it took some doing!

It was definitely something the game was missing, a short, balls out, none stop mode that chucked you straight in to the action.

You need to get through it without dying to get a decent score, I think, so I'll try and do that.

This is coming to the steam and switch in the future.

#140
You were right about world explosion, crenners!

Good lord, dem arrange modes! I thought Blue Wish Desire was a shoo in for my game of the year, but I'm thinking this might have just pipped it to the post.

Arrange boost, beat that first go, crenners style. That is gonna be so much fun to score in! The bullets get a lot faster but the patterns are much more simplified and intuitive to make up for it, and I'm guessing your hitbox is smaller and you sort of get an autobomb with you not dying from getting a hit while your break is active.

Arrange normal, I'm having trouble with the ex 2 boss, but I'm making sure I pick the the shield upgrade from the double break powerups more often and I reckon I can get there with a bunch of lives and cheese it in a few runs time.

It's like a whole new game. The arrange modes are just like m2 arrange modes you get, the perfect intro to the game.

The original game was great, but this is like the perfect package. Couldn't be happier!

edit: Woohoo, got the arrange original clear, didn't beat my best score though.

There's my boost score as well in case anyone else is playing.

Crenners

Really great to hear you're enjoying that. I should have given it even more time, and I think it's a fucking amazing mode and makes the game even more spectacular than it already is. Good stuff man. I'll defo give Moth another go, just proper Belsen right now with work and plan b doesn't really help. Plan Belsen. I'll check back on those scores when I do get back to it. Enjoy fella!

Mecha Ritz 2.0 is gonna be a free update on pc, coming next year. I wanna throw more money at hey, but hopefully he'll make megabank off the switch release.

Don't sleep on this, switch lads, if you've not tried it yet. It's godly.
The best implementation of rank in any shmup, for my money. Lots of subtle gradation. It does a great job of constantly fine tuning itself to meet your current skill level.

One of the best shmups ever made, eschatos has made it's way to the japanese eshop - https://store-jp.nintendo.com/list/software/70010000037346.html

@Crenners Demo for Moon Dancer is out - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1790250/Moon_Dancer/
You like terarin games, don't you? Do you still not have your pc set up?
It's the full caravan stage with leaderboards like his last game. Loads of fun!

Here's your score to beat if you get round to trying it (831,840) - https://streamable.com/dvzwqe

Someone on resetera has been posting impressions of the deathsmiles ports - https://www.resetera.com/threads/shmups-shoot-em-ups-ot-the-full-extent-of-the-jam.1752/page-95#post-78788419

"-The DS1 side of the game has essentially arcade-perfect slowdown (they actually invited top DS1 players to playtest the port) and very low input lag.
-The DS2 side of the game has wrong coloring, wrong contrast, almost no arcade slowdown, but very low input lag.
-In both sides for some strange reason you can't zoom in so the screen fills vertically (it stops at 102% in DS1, for example)
-The DLC girls act like a different version of DS1 and you can switch between them (so you can't mix original and DLC girls for P1 and P2)
In summary: the DS1 part of the game is a fantastic port, the DS2 part is a dumpster fire (but with low input lag!)"

Mark was streaming the game before and I popped my head in, and yeah, in deathsmiles 2 it looked like they cranked the gamma right down low, you could barely make out the zombies you're supposed to lock shot in the background of the first stage.

I've already got both games on the 360 and the first one on pc, and the arcade version of the second one I can play, so I was only really gonna pick this up for a convenient way of playing the 360 mode of deathsmiles 2, and since it sounds like they put all there effort into DS1, and just threw that on as an afterthought. I think I might skip this. The DLC characters only working in the first game and costing 20 quid is a bit much as well.

Sounds OK if you don't have the games though, and hopefully any issues can be fixed.

I read mega black label runs great in this version with much better slowdown. The PC port is effed in that regard. That mode has almost zero slowdown.

Hopefully they can fix up DS2 with some patching.

greenman

Shoot up up info request/reminder, looking for vertical arcade shooter from some time in the late 80's/early 90's. My memory is in was a bit like Twin Bee in design but you had a trail of bomb weapons(one a big sweeping flame) following your ship which you used in order, first stage boss was some kind of fish/lion hybrid that appeared out of a waterfall.

Crenners

@ImmaculateClump Will defo give Moon Dancer a go, looks decent from what I seen on Twitter. Not got PC plugged in but may try over Chrimbo if I'm not too pissed or hungover. Will skip DS though, same reasons as yourself.

Yeah, I'll keep an eye on it. See if they patch the slowdown back into DS2. That was the best thing about it! It was so chill and it would crawl to a slideshow at times, with all the spooky rings floating about, it was so hypnotic. Definitely part of it's rough diamond charm and if it ain't there, I'm not likely to beat my score, which would be the whole point of playing it again.

Oh! Apparantly the swich version of DS2X has more slowdown than the 360 version. Haha, might be the one to go for if you're happy playing on that - https://twitter.com/ratikal/status/1471566814819889153

@greenman , I don't know nothing about no cutesy lion coming out of a waterfall, sorry, but it's a nice image.

Might it have been twinbee yahho? The third in the trilogy?
That has a waterfall near the end of the first stage and a boss that could have morphed into a lion behind the mist of time.

https://youtu.be/A6-YLS1W3uI?t=216

Woohoo! I beat the developer in Moon Dancer :D
Top of the leaderboard for now!

Great skills, looks like a really solid game, must be a sequel to Missile Dancer surely. A lot of his games look and seem rather similar now but I feel like he gets what is inherently satisfying in the genre.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that it had the same sort of lock on missile mechanics that you really dug from that game.
Yeah, the campaigns are always a bit too easy, for my money, but the caravan stage is always the star of the show. If his games were just 3 different caravan stages instead of the campaigns, I'd be happier.

Like Danbo said that time, he put into words what I'd been thinking for a while, but it was something like there's far too much kudos awarded to novelty in gaming. Taking existing things and putting them together or just doing something that's been done but really well can be far better.
A great new thing is great, of course, but you don't always have to chase that.

Yeah, he makes decent games and you can see the progress with each one. Hopefully the campaign on this one gets me more pumped.
