The police watchdog has launched an investigation after the death of a 93-year-old disabled care home resident, who was Tasered and pepper sprayed by officers.

Police had tried to detain Donald Burgess, who was wheelchair-bound, had one leg and suffered from dementia, following a report he had threatened care staff with a knife.

Two officers from Sussex Police attended the home, in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, on 21 June.

One of them used Pava spray, which is similar to pepper spray, while the other deployed a Taser. The knife was then removed from Mr Burgess and he was then handcuffed.

He was taken to hospital, where he remained until his death three weeks later on 13 July.

So far the IOPC investigation has included taking witness statements, reviewing the officers' body-worn footage, and attending the post mortem examination on 21 July. The cause of Mr Burgess's death is not yet known.

Gross misconduct notices have been served on the two officers involved, both police constables, with letters advising them they are under criminal investigation for manslaughter.

The IOPC says these actions do not necessarily mean disciplinary proceedings or criminal charges will follow.

The Metropolitan police force is facing a fresh allegation of racism after a black man walking his dog claimed he was choked for 90 seconds in a headlock before being taken back to a police station and strip-searched.

Following a decade-long legal battle for justice, the Met last month accepted that Zac Sharif-Ali was illegally stopped and searched by a white officer, PC Duncan Bullock, on London's Chiswick Common in December 2012.

Bullock, who was dressed in plain clothes, did not properly identify himself, failing to give his name or station, which made the search unlawful. Sharif-Ali was released without charge the same day...

The duty sergeant during the incident told the IOPC that Bullock did not have a good work ethic and would stop and search people around lunchtime, and then "think he would not have anything to do for the rest of the day". She said: "I remember that day PC Bullock had gone out for his sandwich, so I knew he would bring back a stop and search record form as he always conducted a stop and search when he went to get his lunch."...

An immigration official at the Home Office has been suspended after a BBC investigation revealed he had been posting racist content on WhatsApp.

Rob Lewis, an ex-Metropolitan Police officer, is understood to have created the group chat, which also included other former Met police officers.

Newsnight has been passed dozens of messages, all shared within the group chat, by a member of the group. Many of the images are racist and too offensive to show. Some contain the very strongest racial slurs.

Some of the posts reference the government's Rwanda policy, while others joke about recent flooding in Pakistan, which left almost 1,700 people dead. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also feature in several memes, alongside racist language.

Several of the members of the WhatsApp group used to work for the Diplomatic Protection Group (DPG), a specialist operations branch of the Met that guards the Houses of Parliament and protects ministers.

The unit has since changed its name and is now called the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection (PaDP).

Newsnight understands serving police officers were part of the group in question until recently, but many left following the murder of Sarah Everard, last year. Ms Everard was murdered by Wayne Couzens, who was a member of the same specialist branch.

It comes as a serving officer with the Met has also shared a racist image with Newsnight, which he says has been doing the rounds on WhatsApp in recent months. The image is too offensive to publish and involves a picture of black babies.

Chris Kaba was not a suspect and was being followed by a police car without lights or sirens before he was shot dead by a firearms officer, an inquest into his death has been told.

The unarmed father-to-be was killed by a single shot to the head fired by an officer referred to only as NX121, in a residential road in Streatham on 5 September, Southwark coroner's court heard on Tuesday morning.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Metropolitan police said Kaba had been shot "after a vehicle pursuit". The Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is investigating the shooting, made no mention of a chase in a summary of the incident read to the court.

Can we really say that The Metropolitan Police is a criminal gang? Sure the dictionary defines 'gang' as "a group of people with compatible or mutual interests", and sure The Metropolitan Police is institutionally racist and comprises members who often commit crimes or are convicted criminals with offences ranging from petty theft, to racist and misogynistic offences against the Communications Act, to rape, to murder, to rape AND murder...but "a criminal gang"? This is surely unfair. If this sort of thing is allowed to go unchallenged then the same sorts of names will be getting applied to Premiere League footballers next.
