Just caught up with this - I loved that. Self-indulgent? Maybe, but I didn't care, frankly they deserve to be for this finale. I thought it was actually rather touching (especially for the long term fans) and there were several laugh out loud moments throughout. And that cheeky ending was joyous.

That'll do Reece. That'll do.

Think I gave up on this halfway through series five (or whenever the refree episode was, which was the nadir for me). Was always torn on this as a programme - loved the ideas, but always found it a little bit too pleased with itself. I also think with a dark drama slash comedy program it is extremely hard to get the balance right, and certainly enjoyed the former part more than the latter. Is it worth diving back into or was the best stuff early on?

Kankurette

Series 5 was the one with the referees, yes. Definitely check out the later series.
 - Series 6 is one of the weaker ones but How Do You Plead?, Lip Service and Simon Says are all ones I'd recommend (although I admit with Simon Says, I'm biased because it reminds me a bit of Stephen King's Misery), and Hurry Up and Wait to a lesser extent. I'd definitely not recommend Wuthering Heist, because that episode was very pleased with itself and if you don't know anything about Commedia dell'Arte, you won't get it. I'm still not sure how I feel about Last Night of the Proms, although I liked that the liberal Remainer turned out to be more of a dickhead than the Brexiters. And the old English sheepdog was called Boris.
 - Series 7 is a very strong series and Wise Owl is one of the best finales. I can't think of a single episode I disliked. A Random Act of Kindness was the weakest as the ending felt tacked on, but Nine Lives Kat, Mr King, Merrily Merrily and Kid/Nap are all decent enough (apparently Steve's Welsh in Mr King is crap though).
 - I've not watched all of Series 8, I've still got 3x3 left but it was a clever bit of misdirection and I saw the ending (and there's a Chris Morris reference!) Best episode is probably Mother's Ruin, it's very darkly funny, and I also liked Paraskevidekatriaphobia, The Bones of St Nicholas (even if Simon Callow is a bit too hammy in it) and Love Is a Stranger, even if I saw the twist coming a mile off. Steve is amazing in The Last Weekend, but it left a very nasty taste in my mouth.

I think there have been episodes this season which have been as good as anything they'd done before.

Kankurette

I think I'm one of the only people who liked CTRL/ALT/ESC, but that was because it was a huge gut punch and very close to home. Speaking of gut punches, Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room will always be one of the most poignant episodes.

He's notoriously anti-Liberal.

My big gripe from the last one is this:

I'll let the weak 'Bank' go as it could be seen as an allusion to Robin's poor writing, but a bus stop called Nelson's Column? No, the bus stop is called Trafalgar Square - it should have been Monument, or even Cockfosters would have been better.
Not to mention that if it's a list of stops, Shepherds Bush is in the wrong direction from Bank. I mean, who writes this crap?!!

Underturd

He never says Nelson's Column is a stop, only that they can see it. Number 9 bus route :-)

He literally does. Askwith's 'posh' character is reading a list of stops.

Underturd

Does he actually say "stops"? Because OK, I could have missed the bit where he did.

Yes, he does. I even double-checked by looking on iPlayer while I'm at work. You're welcome!

Cheers for pointing out my inadequacy :-D

I thought that was the point... he's using random stops (either existing, or ones in his own head) just to fit in with his weak innuendo? Hence highlighting his shit writing?

Sorry it's been a long day and I'm not sure what's going on anymore.

idunnosomename

i've never been on one but presumably those hop-on/off tourist buses just call the stopping points by landmark

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

I loved that episode and felt quite emotional at certain points towards the end, but... the Askwith and Anne Reid stuff was all rather reminiscent of Extras, wasn't it?

Cuddly old national treasures ‐ Reid in 9, Corbett in Extras ‐ snorting coke backstage at a showbiz gathering. An oblivious actor ‐ Askwith in 9, Patrick Stewart in Extras ‐ bothering someone with a dreadful self‐penned script. An oblivious actor ‐ Askwith in 9, Les Dennis in Extras ‐ getting their saggy old arse out while one of the main protagonists looks uncomfortable.

I'm not suggesting that Reece and Steve were consciously ripping off Extras, of all fucking things, but I was struck by the similarities.

Hi Reece. Please don't fume, it's just a stray observation. Calm down.

Glebe

Yeah just popped in to post about the Corbett in Extras similarity. In any case it was a lovely send-off.

Just to add to those loving it on the Cook'd and Bomb'd forum, I really enjoyed that.

Haha! That'll be the party when CaB finally ends.

Missed a trick by not having Reece dressed like this for the occasion:

lazyhour

I enjoyed this too, especially the Key/Parkinson opener. Key's got a great physical presence.

I found Nick Mohammed's self-obsessed podcaster to be funny at first, then it quickly devolved into repetitive Extras-tier shite as it kept going.

So which pair of us were disguised as hares? YOU decide!

popcorn should have been invited for his brilliant performance of being put into a bin

Fuck off with your "Easter egg" wank, DoG.

Surprised how sad I feel now this is over. I said back in Series 7 (I think) that I wished they'd sack it off as it felt tired and the quality was slipping but I feel quite foolish now. Can't think of any other TV series that was so consistently inventive. Almost feels like an old friend that I took for granted has passed away.

Anyone heard anything of their plans for after the live shows?

Plunge

Didn't really get that but suppose it was a nod to all the tedious bores who like noticing hares and getting references when they watch this series

Mellors' review is also wonderful as I've come to expect from her.
