I recently watched Pauline McLynn in one of several terrible Barbara Taylor Bradford TVMs made here, that often have Ted faces in them, cos 90s Irish film industry.
One, Remember is set in Amsterdam and England, but shot in Amsterdam and Ireland, and begins with an air crash overseen by 'British' police in a people carrier with Police stencilled on the spare wheel, overseen by Pat 'Mustard' Laffan. In true Irish style, it stars actual nonce Stephen Collins.
Another one, Her Own Rules, where Melissa 'Laura Ingalls' Gilbert goes to England, after being a child slave in an orphanage there, and discovers her mother didn't die, which feels very close to what happened in the industrial schools here, and is shot here, but is set in a strange fairytale England where McLynn is the local Northern WPC, and there's pub singers utterly unlike anything in the UK (shot in Malahide).

If any of the non-Irish Cabbers missed it, Second Captains Saturday featured an interview with Ardal O'Hanlon yesterday. This follows hot-on-the-heels of a somewhat stilted interview on their Patreon with Arthur Mathews, who was on last week plugging his book (not very successfully) about Kevin O'Higgins. But the O'Hanlon one is perfectly nice and has a few bits about Fr. Ted.

For context, Second Captains is a predominantly sports podcast and there's a thin veneer of sports content in these Saturday radio broadcasts as the (always non-sports) guests are supposed to recall their own greatest sporting moments.

No - but it really felt like the elephant in the room in the Mathews interview, as Mathews was very defensive about the subject matter of his book and kept reaffirming that he wasn't an extremist of any type (even when this wasn't being implied...) partly why this episode was a rare Second Captains dud, I'd say.

That kind of thing gives me more respect for Matt Berry, who I had never particularly cared for, when he completely dismissed GL. I remember some interview where he called him "the writer" of "that comedy", and how he had nothing to do with it all.

My opinion of Berry changed completely with Toast of London. Something just clicked and now he only brings me joy. This affirms that change of heart.

Yeah it's from an interview with Vulture in 2021.

The episode looks "ridiculous and dated" now, he says, and he hopes people can accept that it was a product of an earlier time. He comes back to the idea later as we're getting ready to leave. It bothers him that he wasn't clear: "I don't condone anything that that comedy portrayed, you know? I don't share any views that the writer has."

I was also at a House of Fools taping where he stopped the recording when there was a transphobic adlib made by one of the other actors and when they started filming again that joke was gone.

He seems a decent bloke.

Yeah, I really love this bit, the fact that he came back to the point after the interview had ended. It wasn't just a simple damage control answer, but something that genuinely concerned him.
