All the flavours of crisps

Not sure, think this routine has been recorded twice.  Once during Comedy Vehicle and also at a separate performance.  "He loves all the flavours of crisps.  Plain.  All the flavours of crisps".  I remember that.  Maybe on the other one he mentions two flavours, plain and perhaps cheese & onion?  Googled it and all I got was an article by a comedian saying she went to see Stewart Lee and all he did was actually list all the different flavours of crisps.  Surely not?

Dr Rock

Ok, never been on telly naming all the crisps, so doubt he ever did live not on telly.

superthunderstingcar

All the times he did that routine.

Comedy Vehicle 2.1

All the times.

Twilkes

If only there was a flavour of crisps called Red Leicester.

I was asking how many performances of the routine were well known, how many flavours of crisps were mentioned.  Also noted that a comedian on Chortle might well have been talking bumshite.  I could have articulated it much better, I'll cheerfully grant you that!

Magnum Valentino

He does use the structure of the joke a few other times though doesn't he?

All the X of thing.

A single thing.

All the X.

lankyguy95

There are loads of comedians better than I am.

There's...Daniel Kitson...

Ah there's loads.

Lankyguy95 and big fella, have you two ever thought about teaming up

Captain Z

Far be it from me to tell comedians how to do their job, but I'm always slightly disappointed he didn't go with 'cheddar' (surely the plainest of all the cheeses) when he did that variation.

If it helps (i.e. anyone has a recording of it), the performance Laura Lexx seems to be referring to in the Chortle article would be from the 'Invisible Dot Club: By The Sea' (she mentions they were bussed to a seaside venue) at Portobello Town Hall on 20/08/2010.

There's a picture from Flickr of the gig, with the title 'Stewart Lee went a bit mental':

Here's another of him laying on the stage (presumably during the 'Crisps' bit):

There's a review here that mentions Lee stood onstage in silence for a minute in response to a heckler.

As we both remark how that activity could be a lyrical rewrite of a popular song by The Turtles.

Surely Richard Herring has done enough cheddar-based material for the both of them?

lankyguy95

Plain is a better word choice than cheddar, for it implies the existence of other flavours, underpinning the silliness of the punchline.

Try again, Captain.

I got the impression he was referring to a list of cheeses, although what the cheese Lee chose to illustrate cheeses is is currently a mystery, presumably because 'obviously everyone knows this routine'.

EDIT: I just realised that in your reply you may have been aware of this, and suggested plain as the best example of a cheese, which is clearly nonsense.

lankyguy95

I'll be honest, the only part of the routine I remember is the quoted part. It was ages ago.

dead-ced-dead

I'm going to be honest, I thought you had posted to the wrong forum.

pigamus

He did the '.....plain' punchline again at some point I think

Captain Z

I forget the context but there's a later series of Comedy Vehicle where he calls back to the crisps routine whilst talking about cheeses.

"All the different types of cheese...

... Red Leicester...

...all the different cheeses"

Is it when he talks about his imaginary wives fighting?  I seem to recall that was cheese dreams.

Unintentional diametric opposite of Monty Python's cheese shop sketch.  If it had one less type of cheese.

Mobbd

He did the crisps bit at Silver Stewbilie.

Yes, it's in S3E04 'Context', in the setup to the punchline of the 'Imaginary Wives' bit..

That was part of his 2010 Fringe run, the day before the Invisible Dot gig at Portobello Town Hall. He was doing Vegetable Stew, which was the workup for material for Series 2 of Comedy Vehicle (the 'Crisps' bit became part of the first episode).
