Um. Decent take on the man of sorrows. Be better without the hands and shadowdick possibly. But hardly terrible imo

Def not tech either. At The Gates worship gone a bit Black now

Also uncomfortably close to Carcass' Surgical Steel in some respects. Which is fuckin great imo

Shite, though. I really hate the current Orb logo as well. Really ugly font, and the R is basically a backwards F.

Some of those are good. "Born Again" by Black Sabbath is a really cool image, and I don't know why Scorpions' "Lovedrive" always pops up on these lists. It's great.

I do hate Bonded By Blood's cover though.

And worth saying both Battleaxe - Burn This Town and Wolf - Wolf (which has a fun back cover actually) have been replaced on the rereleases. Battleaxe was a mistake where the draft of the artwork went to press without the band's permission. It would've been cool if done properly, esp since the town was supposed to be Sunderland.

It's by a well-known Swedish illustrator who's done horror and childrens books that the band wanted to use. It's weird but i think it's way more individual than the usual airbrushed manowar sword n dragon shit as well as looking a bit 70s retro

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Arnold

After they broke through they had stop using him as he was a bit niche to Swedes. I saw them last year at Camden Underworld, great bunch of lads. Meat and potatoes metal

Eh? I was just comparing the reasonably, indeed arguably, bad Love Drive cover with the famously bad, or should that be infamously bad, Virgin Killer Album by the same group.

Oh hang on, are you same guy who had a go at me the other day about something harmless I'd said, even that wasn't even directed at anyone yet alone anyone in specific. I think, I can't remember what I wrote now.

The joke is that the Virgin Killer is so infamous to the point where it got wikipedia classed as a child porn site in the 00s for hosting it, that by even mentioning it, you are are accusing someone of paedophilia.

Scorpions had so many fucking awful covers. God knows where they got them from. Uli had a narrow escape.

Where's the accusation I was linking to any specific person? Is the album so corrupting it stains the very soul of any mentioned in its presence?

The album, with artwork is still on Wikipedia. BTW.

I've always quite like the artwork for what I think is their first album, lonesome Crow. Never heard it.

Haha, cheers for that. It raises so many questions I never expected to be pondering when I saw the front cover. I originally thought he was a terrifying beast that might haunt a moor, feasting on unwary travellers and the like, but now it seems like he's heading to a flooded dog brothel and may actually be quite a regular bloke by the standards of the area. Does the album have any songs about him? I need more information.

Post by: idunnosomename on January 16, 2020, 09:33:02 PM
they did send Arnold the lyrics and some aspects of the back cover are from them, apparently. I think it was a bit of an esoteric commission and they were just happy he did it.

here's the bigger image

honestly I remember when I first saw the cover I thought it was a terrible solo Black Metal effort rather than a trad heavy metal band. but now I love baboon wolf and the almost Funnybones house/brothel on the back. it's probably their best album even though they don't play anything off it now. Fucking great guitar tone.
Title: Re: Terrible album covers thread Part 2
Post by: Egyptian Feast on January 16, 2020, 09:49:42 PM
I'll definitely give that a listen. Hans Arnold sounds like an interesting bloke, I'd have been happy if he did my album cover and wouldn't have replaced baboon wolf for a reissue even if people laugh at him. He's above their sneers. They're just jealous.

I was tempted to change my avatar to him, but it came out shit.

Have you ever heard Fish-Thing?

It was originally done for the Lather box set (which never materialised), before Joe's Garage came into existence.  When Lather was cancelled, Zappa decided to just use the Lather photos to save money on new designs for Joe's Garage.

The reasoning behind the photos from that shoot is unknown, but it's more likely to be an ironic comment or even outright critique of racism in American music at the time.  Say what you want about Zappa, but being racist is one thing no one can accuse him of.

Ones from that Kerrang list that I thought were alright:

I like the lo-fi, teenage-outcasts-in-a-small-town vibe of the first two, and the aesthetic of the Scorpions albums is pure American Psycho (although the music would be a little too new wave for Patrick Bateman's taste).

And although I don't like the NOFX or Frenzal Rhomb ones, they are deliberately bad. That's the whole point. Loads of 90s pop punk bands had gross-out album covers.

Germany's first 'independent' band, krautrock-prog vibes, this is their last album...but I prefer the original

That's back to front, of course. Bit subtle...

A shit load of absolute corkers from the world of rock and metal in this list

Some nice droll comments with each one too.

You're right there's some utter shit in there though I was a bit disappointed it included Rush's Hemispheres in there. Nice artists impression of Richard Herring's brain circa 1998.

I really hated the cover of Damned Damned Damned when I was a kid. I found it in my brother's collection and it must have crossed some sort of line with me. I thought they were horrible people.

The Damned were always wacky and cartoonish and a bit end of pier, I don't see the Margate cover as offbrand or a 'how the mighty have fallen' moment. If anything, it was the eras where they were closer to taking themselves seriously (ie the two phases where Captain Sensible had left) that are the aberrations. Even then they weren't above daft moments like the 'Gigolo' video with Vanian wearing a mortar board while stuffed animals rained down on him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F41oY5CXpAE

Yeah, it's great. If I saw that in a record shop in the jazz or avant-garde or post-rock sections I'd buy it without knowing needing to know anything about the artist. Shame it's not, and is instead the art for a band so utterly stale and turgid there's no connection whatsoever with the cover art and the music.

"Good afternoon lads, I've called you into the office about your new album... what's is it called again?... ah yes, no rest for the wicked."
"Now I've been informed that you had your hearts set on the cover being a... 'hot leather clad vampire chick emerging from a coffin'... but the thing is that earlier this week my dear old friend Keith Richards popped into the office and we ended up going to lunch."
"I don't really remember much about what happened after that but apparently at some point I promised Alan and Marge in accounts that if they got the quarterlies in before friday they could be on the cover of the next album we released."
"As I'm sure you're aware it's now thursday and here are the quarterlies on my desk."
"Yes yes I understand it's not ideal but I'm afraid a promise is a promise so we'll just have to make the best of it."
"Maybe we can stick horns on them or something."

Jim Davidson actually released quite a few singles back in the day, including a cover of " White Christmas". I wonder if a certain one of his distinctively- voiced friends make a guest appearance on it? I don't know, and am not going to make any effort to find out. I think it's jolly good of us all at CaB to even acknowledge the existence of Jim Davidson.

I think any album cover that has little easter eggs that are references to song titles or lyrics are something of a lost art, and probably served a purpose by preoccupying lonely, isolated teenagers and steering them away from murdering their parents. So, yes, 'good' in my book, too.

Still though, ironic/cheesy intent or not, that cover art is an absolute stinker.

my copy comes with a signed setlist rather than a signed photo (which I assume is just of the cover). I've got a much more tasteful signed photo from 20 years ago of her anyway.

I love Yello to bits, and they've got a new album called 'Point' coming out at the end of this month.
But the artwork for their albums really has gone from sublime to pretty bloody awful in recent years, and this latest one is no exception.

Yes, their minimalist style over the last few albums have been appalling, nearly as dull as the music, sadly. Last good cover? Zebra? Baby? Flag...probably Flag. Baby had some good single sleeves, but the mullet was awful.

Yeah, I love the songs on 'Baby', but was never really a fan of the artwork for that one.  Like you say, Dieter's hair was horrendous.
Last half-decent cover in my opinion was Zebra.

I don't know if it's exactly the design that's the problem with this, more the combination of image and songs about hitting people, nasty groupies, Anita Ward's "bell", and whatever Desmond Dekker wants.

Clearly a horrible misfire as a portrait, but as a piece of art work (airbrush/diffuser and stencils?) there's something satisfying about it; the forms are strong and sinuous, and the tonal balance is well done. The area occupying the left third, with the dove holding a sprig of something, is lovely.

Metabolist (aka The Man Who Sold The World) comes in both a 180g black vinyl edition and a 2020 limited edition handwritten numbered copies on gold vinyl (# 1971 - 2020) and on white vinyl (# 1 - 1970) all randomly distributed. We will not be checking the colour of your record before shipping to give everyone an equal chance.

November 2020 sees the 50th Anniversary of the release of David Bowie’s The Man Who Sold The World in North America. The album marks the beginning of a collaboration with guitarist Mick Ronson that would last through classic works including Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane—as well as the first in a 10-year series of indispensable albums stretching through 1980’s Scary Monsters…

Originally titled Metrobolist, the album's name was changed at the last minute to The Man Who Sold The World. The 2020 re-release of the album under its Metrobolist moniker has been remixed by original producer Tony Visconti, with the exception of the track ‘After All’ which Tony considered perfect as is, and is featured in its 2015 remaster incarnation.

The Metrobolist 50th anniversary artwork has been created by Mike Weller who was behind the historically controversial “dress” cover which Mercury Records refused to release.

Wow, that's a stinker. A masterpiece of a stinker. The concept of the eight-armed floating head (like a giant COVID made from indie) is terrible in itself, but coupled with that wanksnap's face...it's a beauty.

Listening to them now. It's like a post-hardcore Arcade Fire. I wasn't expecting them to be this creative but it is still shit.

Kudos to them using the exact same hand repeated on the album art but using lighting effects on half of them to make it look a little bit authentic. Ploppy looking lads with awful hair and no clothes though... ugh.

This is a great album of groovy jazz and funk versions, let down by an incredibly naff cover. It looks like some kind of bootleg/self-released amateur project, rather than a Blue Note album. Bizarre.

It should be noted that that comes from a Germany-only 2-disc compilation album that Ms. Simon likely had nothing to do with being released. It was also only used on ther first pressing, the second pressing used this artwork (by the same artist, Patrick Von Spreckelsen):
(https://img.discogs.com/8LF_tZvs4vSZ3XN5Fm4lYDhSFcc=/fit-in/600x600/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-4347988-1362431961-3333.jpeg.jpg)
I can only imagine that when she finally saw the original version, Simon asked for it to be redone. The inner sleeve of the gatefold reproduced the oriiginal album artwork:
(https://img.discogs.com/6L0vtmzdp2BsDGY4LXvbN31KDkM=/fit-in/446x218/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-2993160-1310835046.jpeg.jpg)

Patrick Von Spreckelsen did the artwork for 28 of the releases in Warner's '2 Originals' series (which repackaged a pair of early albums by each artist) in the early-to-mid 70s. They were mostly only released in Europe:

Yes, I've had plenty of them come through my record shop, including the far superior second Carly Simon cover. As you note, they're not compilations per se - they're 'twofers' which house reissues of two complete albums in a gatefold sleeve.

They're all pretty cack to my eyes, especially as they tease you with the full original album sleeves on the inner gatefold.

Yeah, that's not one of Von Spreckelsen's. That was designed by Rosie Coole at the Seabrook Graves Aslett design agency. They basically just reused the artwork from the original Halfnelson debut album (before they changed their name and reissued it), which had been put together by Ron, based on an old promotional photo for a car he had stuck on their rehearsal room wall.

Seems a bit low for Ozit/morpheus records. They are pretty much a country bumpkin label but have put out some good stuff previously. Although now looking at their discogs page, they do look like a poor man's Cleopatra records.

Unusual Sounds is a fantastic album and I rate it > BBC radiophonic.

It was reissued a few years later with a different (better) track listing, but not much improvement to the cover:

fake album too according to discogs
https://www.discogs.com/release/10764813-Hannetts-Electronic-Recordings-Homage-To-Delia-Derbyshire/reviews#c847207

"mtd October 25, 2017
Kind of amazed that this has now been out at least 2 months without anyone commenting on the fact that this LP basically isn't what it says it is. Most of the material on here is from a De Wolfe library LP ('Sounds Unusual' by Derek Scott) and would appear to have nothing to do with Hannett at all!
https://www.discogs.com/Derek-Scott-Sounds-Unusual/release/1598507

Bit of a cock-up right? What's the story Ozit-Morpheus?"
From that Discogs review page:
Quote
Chris Hewitt most likely found an unlabelled tape of the De Wolfe LP in question amongst some of the Martin Hannett artifacts he seems to have acquired, put 2 and 2 together and got 7.
Chris Hewitt is the former co-owner of Cargo Studios and friend of Hannett who 'came into possesion' of a load of Hannett's stuff after he died. It's through him that those 'Hannett's personal mixes' Joy Division bootlegs started appearing, and he was also the source for a few of the items of questionable provenance in Peter Hook's 'Grand Charity (definitely not tax bill related, honest guv) Crap Clearout' auction a couple of years ago.

Very probably. The Farm's bassist, Carl Hunter, was also their sleeve designer and is a big fan of both The Clash (he had that very sleeve as his FB profile pic for a while) and Peter Saville. He used the Radion packaging as a basis for his design.

Yeah it's an album of orchestral reworkings of past tracks. Deutsche Grammophon have done a fair few questionable pop-crossover records in recent years. They still have a lot of exceptional stuff, but they definitely edge towards Classic FM fodder at times.

Was that Maurice Von Oswalt and Carl Craig thing on Deutsche Grammophon? That was good.

Library I worked in got rid of a collection of Stockhausen Deutsche Grammofon vinyl in perfect nick. I'd borrowed them all and returned them, should have kept them. FFS.

As if the title wasn't bad enough, they somehow felt the need to commission a sleeve that stood out as particularly shite even at a time when shite artwork was everywhere.

Someone actually drew an arsehole on the chocolate starfish because I guess they feared the subtlety of the pun, either by itself or in combination with a picture of a chocolate starfish which didn't have an anus, would be lost on the audience.

I'd love to know why it was decided that the original version, which matches the shy, understated feel of the music, should be replaced by the 'drunken bloke about to start a fight with you' shot.

I'm quite fond of the Like You Do cover, it's intentionally silly in a very '90s way. I do love the Lightning Seeds, but most of their covers are slightly naff, other than Tilt (which is just straight-up ugly), and Four Winds, which is quite nice.

You're thinking of James Newman, but I can forgive you for it, as both these fellas look like they should be slopping out the grease buckets in a chippie, rather than pursuing pop stardom.

Yer man Arthur here was one of them X Factor contestants.

Why has he chosen 'slightly low budget pretending-to-be-arthouse futuristic sci-fi film poster' as an album cover style?

I bet the music is wistful acoustic shite with a couple of more bombastic-by-numbers rockers

It made me laugh out loud the second I clapped eyes on it, so I'd counter that it is a great cover...for an Ian Brown album. The shit sidebar, the stance, the stupid expression on his face, perfect. The only way it could be improved is if there were a pair of shoving hands instead of the sidebar and the back cover showed him landing on his arse in the pond with a huge splash and a proper 'oof!' expression on his face. I'd buy it and leave it in the shrink wrapping to preserve it.

That looks like Kyoto Garden in Holland Park. If it is, you’re not supposed to stand on those decorative stones. His way indeed, a rebel to the end (hopefully soon).

This is a ton better than shit like the Ian Brown album but I still think it's poor. A poorly rendered pastiche of a pastiche.
