Season 20 - Episode 13 - Gone Maggie Gone

Odd to note that the TV in the couch gag is the old TV. I wonder if this was an unused gag that they repurposed. The HDTV did not fall from the wall.

Springfield is going to experience a solar eclipse. Really out of place space shot of the moon moving in between the sun and the earth. The Simpsons are watching the eclipse. Homer damages his camera obscura so Marge gives him hers. Marge looks at the eclipse and we get a shot right out of a creepypasta with her eyes going red. Dr Hibbert says that Marge must keep her eyes covered for two weeks and explains to Homer that he must not cause her any stress over the next two weeks otherwise she could be blinded.

The family have cooked Marge a nice meal to relax her. Homer enters the kitchen to find it overrun by rats. Homer goes to the pest control store with Santa's Little Helper and Maggie and he buys some poison. Santa's Little Helper wants the bunny teddy that Maggie has and Maggie wants the poison that looks like candy. Eventually Homer has to cross a river like that classic riddle about taking only one across at a time and not leaving one with a certain thing. Homer sees Professor Frink and tries to ask him for help but accidentally throws poison into his mouth. Homer works out the riddle but leaves Maggie on the doorstep of a convent where a nun thinks she has been left for them. The nuns will not let him have Maggie back.

Homer returns home and tells Bart and Lisa and they tell him not to tell Marge. Lisa pretends to be a young nun to infiltrate the convent. Lisa must find clues to find a gem for some reason according to one nun. Homer turns his hand into Maggie to fool Marge. Lisa continues to find clues and must find the biggest ring in Springfield. Lisa goes to the belltower. Bart has to pretend to be Lisa. Principal Skinner and Comic Book Guy are also seeking the gem. Skinner tells the story of the gem. Turns out the biggest ring is actually the word ring in the Springfield sign. Mr Burns is there and also wants the gem.

A message on the Springfield sign is unjumbled and reveals that the gem is Lisa. Lisa thinks she is the gem child that will bring world peace. Mother Superior then reveals that the gem child is Maggie. Maggie is on a throne and rainbows shine over Springfield. Peace reigns over the town. Marge barges in to rescue Maggie and her eyes are magically healed. Bart replaces Maggie on the throne and hell reigns over Springfield. Credits roll.

3/10 - The second half was fucking weird. Why the hell couldn't it just be a standard story about Homer having to fool Marge while she has lost her sight? Oh well.

I came across a Season 22 episode last night on TV with Simpsons puppets and it ended on a Moe puppet and live action Katy Perry pussyeating joke .I have nothing more to add.

That one of those examples of modern Simpsons just having a celeb there for no other reason than "look a celeb!" No smart jokes, no natural plot value, just a boring cameo.

Season 20 - Episode 12 - No Loan Again, Naturally
It's nice seeing the Simpsons doing an episode that sort-of recognises that economics exists, some of the bank jokes are quite funny (even if they seem too extreme for the Simpsons universe), and the idea of Ned as the Simpsons' landlord is obviously one with a lot of comic possibility. But the suggestion that the Simpsons have a Mardi Gras party every year just seems like a random fuck you to people who've actually watched the show before. Still, it is quite entertaining.

This is another that feels like it's a parody of something but again I've no idea what it's a parody of - a bit like some Japanese video games (with their odd portrayal of a still quasi-medieval Europe), a bit like Da Vinci code? Nonetheless, it feels like the parody is very well done, it's just that there are no fucking jokes after the first 5 minutes. Again, a decent idea squandered.

As for Katy Perry, who doesn't want to see Perry in a tight rubber dress next to the puppet Simpsons? Who cares about plot or logic or suitability for children or whatever, I think that all of us no matter our gender or sexuality want to see Perry-puppet porn.

Well, it was a parody of the Muppets so having a celeb there made sense in that instance.

They've been doing that since season 8 to be fair

The episode that heavily features Werner Herzog comes to mind.

I think this is an area where The Simpsons has struggled for 20 years. In the classic era you didn't need to see the thing they were parodying to enjoy it.

Reading through these I'm struck by comparing This Simpsons and Viz.

Both Viz and The Simpsons have been around for over 30 years, and 30 years ago both were two of the funniest things in existence - essential viewing/reading.

Yet now, while I don't think I've bothered to watch a Simpsons episode through in about 20 years (the Behind The Laughter one is the last one I remember), I'm still laughing at each new issue of Viz. E.g., just this week we have the genius of "Professor Howard Carter and the Unstoppable Sex Machine".

Longevity is no barrier to quality, and there's no excuse for The Simpsons being so bad for so long.

Wonderful Butternut

We're 2 steps away from:

Homer shits into his own mouth. This is apparently hilarious.

Marge has an Onlyfans. Homer feels like a cuck, but then remembers he can shit in his own mouth which makes him happy.

Bart and Lisa die and are resurrected. Donald Trump guest stars as himself in a 2 second cameo.

The end.

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

They'll definitely do Marge having an OnlyFans and she'll naively join up with it because she thinks only people who like you can watch you on it or something else sad and depressing.

There'll be an episode where Marge is concerned about Homer taking an hour to do a shit because he's always mildly constipated from his lousy diet, and then on a new diet he shits like clockwork but oh no now he ends up having to work more because he doesn't get an hour long shit break in the afternoon so he goes back. There's no B plot because of all the time taken up showing Homer bare-arsed on the toilet groaning and straining. People tune in because it's all over the Internet that they'll actually show a shit and then at the very end of the episode there's like a half-second of a shit disappearing down the toilet. And now you're all picturing what a shit would look like if it appeared on The Simpsons. Buzzfeed and similar websites go absolutely crazy reposting the one frame of animation that shows the shit most clearly and talking about how The Simpsons is still pushing boundaries even 31 years after its debut.

As a brief aside, have there ever been any popular animated series that throw out the idea of a 'floating timeline', and have their characters grow old as the show does?

I'd be interested to see that - especially instead of Homer & Marge having a pick-your-own backstory depending on which decade you prefer, or the South Park kids remaining in the fourth grade from 9/11 through Obama to the pandemic.

The only example I can think of is Fry's time-travel duplicate Lars, who is 12ish years older than him because he spent 12 more years than Fry living in the 21st century.

I think that's part of the problem with long-running animated family sitcoms though. To be fair, nobody could've predicted that The Simpsons would be so popular and such a money spinner that it would stay on the air for 30 years. And then when do you age up the characters? After one season or four seasons or ten seasons, and how much by? If you change the characters too much, do you risk losing the audience?

notjosh

F is for Family exists in a very specific time period and I can imagine it might age the characters up if it continues for a few more series.

I think the South Park characters have gone up two grades since the show started. If you recall, Ms Chokesondick was their new teacher when they entered the fourth grade, and Eric Cartman even sang a song about it.

QuoteRemember how it used to be in the Third Grade?
We used to laugh and play and cherish each day in the Third Grade.
We learned wondrous things from a teacher so nice
Sat on marshmallow desks with teddy-bear smiles
The world seemed to all make sense
But that sense seems to slowly fade
After Third Grade.
In Third Grade we used to write with crayons
We would make sparkly pictures with glitter and glue
We had warm cookies and hearts full of love
And there wasn't a care in the world for me... of you...
There's not a thing in this life that I wouldn't trade just to go back, for one minute
To Third Grade.

but more importantly a clear cutaway "joke" where Lisa says she forgot she was playing hide and seek with Milhouse [cut to] Milhouse in a dumpster "3 weeks, gotta be some kind of record"

Season 20 - Episode 14 - In the Name of the Grandfather

PISS OFF HDTV FALLING OFF THE WALL. PISS OFF

The Simpsons are visiting a garden expo. Homer buys a hot tub and the family are very relaxed. They are so relaxed that they forget the father son wheelbarrow race at the Springfield Retirement Home. Grandpa destroys the hot tub. The Simpsons vow to make it up to Grandpa, so they take him to Ireland to drink in a pub he used to drink in which is the plot of the episode.

Leprechauns pilot the plane. The town is now all modern and commercialised. The bar is still there but nobody goes there anymore. Marge and the kids visit the sites. Guinness is 50% bog water and 50% chocolate syrup. Bart paints his arse grey so people kissing the Blarney Stone will kiss his arse. Homer and Grandpa get drunk and buy the pub. Homer asks Moe for help in making the pub a success. Moe suggests letting people do illegal stuff in the bar. They realise that it is illegal to smoke in Ireland so let the patrons smoke, and they become an instant success. The Irish authorities close them down and deport them. Chief Wiggum arrives to take them back but he tases and maces himself. Credits roll.

Season 20 - Episode 15 - Wedding for Disaster

The HDTV did not fall off the wall.

The Parson (like a Bishop, I think) is visiting Springfield and everybody is really excited for some reason. He speaks to Reverend Lovejoy and tells him his ministerial certification has lapsed, so the various ceremonies are invalid which includes Homer and Marge's marriage which is the plot of the episode.

Homer tells Marge that the next wedding will be one she deserves. Homer is really romantic and proposes to Marge again. Homer and Marge plan the wedding. Marge is controlling and won't listen to any of Homer's suggestions at all. Homer accuses Marge of being a bridezilla. On the day of the wedding everything is as Marge wants it, but Homer has gone missing. Homer is trapped in a room like off of the Saw films.

Lisa and Bart discover a keyring on the floor with the initials SB which they believe to be Sideshow Bob's. They visit Bob and he is making a bust of Krusty. Krusty confirms he was with Bob all day, so it couldn't be him. Turns out the keyring belongs to Selma Bouvier, and it is Patty and Selma that have taken Homer hostage. Homer asks for his wedding vows to be read to Marge and reads them out for his captor and they have a change of heart. Homer reunites with Marge. Lisa and Bart confront Patty and Selma and force them to pay another wedding. Credits roll.

Season 20 - Episode 16 - Eeny Teeny Maya Moe

They think they are so fucking smart with their little addition of will the HDTV fall off the wall or won't it. They aren't smart. It is shit. It isn't going to become some iconic thing that everybody talks about when they think of the opening. It is just shit. FUCK OFF.

Homer is watching hockey but Marge wants him to spend time with Maggie. Maggie thinks Santa's Little Helper is her father. Homer thinks Maggie is called Mugsey. Homer takes Mugsey to Moe's. They find a playground behind a newly discovered window in Moe's where a group of babies gang up on her. Moe tells a story about how he met a woman called Maya on the internet who he gets along with which is the plot of the episode.

Moe meets Maya in person and finds that she is a little person. Maya hid that she was a little person from Moe as she was worried how he would react, but he doesn't care. Their date goes really well. Moe is worried about telling the gang at the bar about her and he thinks they will treat her badly. Maggie has to fight to the death with a baby in the playground but Homer picks her up just in time. Maggie is acting really worried and Marge thinks the time Homer has been spending with Maggie is to blame. Marge buys a teddy bear with a hidden camera in it.

Maya asks Moe why he hasn't introduced her to his friends. Moe decides to have a double date with Homer and Marge as he doesn't think they would be judgemental. They go to the fair together and Moe asks Maya to marry him but screws things up by making too many short jokes. Moe asks the guys at the bar how he can win Maya back. Moe wants to get surgery to make him short. Maya convinces him not to but tells him she wants a man who doesn't define her by her height. Marge watches the CCTV video to see Homer get beaten up by a super strong baby and Maggie rescues him.

Moe is sad at the bar and Homer arrives and tells him that he found love once, so he will find love again. Credits roll.

4/10 - Some good jokes can easily elevate an episode which would usually be quite ordinary. It is quite strange that they seem to act like this is the first time they have done a Moe love story.

Even the Flintstones did this a bit, with the main characters having kids.
