This was a bit meandering and toothless; it didn't quite give me the catharsis I was hoping for. But it was nice to hear JC in chatty mode; never really witnessed that before. Decent fly-on-the-wall opportunity.

It seems that neither JC nor Alexei believes there ever was a brick through Angela Eagle's office window. Am I right in saying that? Alexei was pretty clear but he has license to sound a bit cranky and paranoid if he wants to. What lent credence to it was when Jeremy said "alleged."

I liked the thing about "let's campaign for something instead of against something".

I liked/was amused by how earnest Lynn sounds (and whoever that voice from the Gorbals was - if she was introduced, I missed it).

Mr_Simnock

That was great, more of that if at all possible.

Yes, very much enjoyed this today. Noticed Alexei try a couple of time to sort of get Jezza to say out loud that he thinks Starmer's a cunt but he didn't get drawn in. Probably a wise decision.

I really like the music in this podcast too.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Genuine spoiler about the latest episode, so, y'know.

Spoiler alert
Hats off to whichever one of you lot told Alexei and Talal about this thread! What a lovely plug for the site. Alexei sounded genuinely pleased that this thread exists, while adding that he'll never read it.

Also, it was fascinating to hear that Morris tried to prank Alexei with the Carla the Elephant stunt in Brass Eye. Alexei told him to fuck off, as of course he didn't buy into the idea of an elephant jamming its trunk in its anus. Morris probably knew he wouldn't be fooled, but gave it a go anyway.

Lovely stuff. Chuffed that they read out my message too - it was 6 Months In A Leaky Boat that got banned by the beeb, not Defunkt btw.

Excited by the prospect of some tasty Dudley Sutton anectodery in the next ep, I must say.

Ah, so that was you! Nice one.

Talal, if you're reading this, don't forget to ask Alexei about Dudley Sutton!

Petey Pate

Hi Alexei, if you are reading this I just want to know where do you get your ideas from?

It was insulting of him to even ask never mind if thought he would fall for it or not, he's gone down in my estimation a bit for that.

It would be great if Stewart Lee could be a regular guest. They clearly adore each other.

Stewart Lee, Alexei Sayle and Alan Moore in the same room, just chatting.

Take my money etc.

Hey, nice one. I just this minute heard the mention. What a bizarre coincidence of timing that he talked about celebrities who fell for the Cake sting...

Hi Talal, you seem nice

Seconded. I like the episodes with more Talal.

The Ian Dury/Toshiba 1984 story was interesting. I hadn't known that Dury did the vocal for the ad.

Yes, we must protect the sacred cows at all costs.

Young Ones special has just "dropped", as they say on the streets:

Mr_Simnock

It's very good. He mentions dropping listener numbers so doing this to get some more although not too seriously.

Panbaams

I enjoyed it, but it made me think that a commentary/watchalong where they dissected an episode would be better still.

What's Alexei Sayle's problem with Ben Elton?

Perhaps they could rope in Edmondson, Planer and Ryan too? Mind you, Ade doesn't really like to dwell on his past work for some reason. He can be quite curmudgeonly about The Young Ones, posisbly because he didn't have any involvement in the writing. I dunno.

There's obviously not a chance in hell of Ben Elton appearing on the show.

Quote from: Mobbd on December 11, 2021, 11:40:22 AMIs it that he's a cunt?

He's not though, is he? I get why he rubs people up the wrong way, but he's always struck me as an essentially decent person. From what I can gather, Alexei regards Ben Elton as a careerist stand-up arriviste who ripped off his 'ranting' stage persona. A fake.

I don't think that's particularly fair, as apart from a shared propensity for talking very quicky and loudly, they don't really have that much in common as performers. There's presumably more to it than that, though.

It was interesting to hear that Mayer and Elton wrote separately then merged the scripts. I wonder whether that relationship had a lot of creative tension.

Fun fact: Mayer's brother-in-law was Andy Gill, who married her sister in 1999.

I like a good story about BBC bars/hospitality/parties and this delivered.

Well I really liked the Saul Williams episode, if you're reading this Alexei.

Yeah likewise, and I'll definitely be checking out his film when it's available

Elton married an Australian and has spent a lot of time out here not doing very much, until prior-COVID he tried to get a comedy show going on commercial TV that was arse.
Apart from writing those mostly bad books, squandered talent yeah?
(oh, forgot Upstart Crow. Probably good to keep forgetting that, yeah?)

Brundle-Fly

I haven't liked everything Ben Elton has created but enough to slightly defend him here. He's hardly resting on his laurels.

Blackadder it might not be, but Upstart Crow has been pretty successful and has opened as a show in the West End. Elton has also recently finished a big stand up tour and performing a London run in December. He's written seventeen novels over the years. Are they all bad? I haven't read them all though. Maybe, he should start his own podcast?

Laurel resting is not the charge against Ben Elton. The charge is cuntery. Grifting, lying, schmoozing, lowbrow/philistine cuntery. Burp!

The fact that Upstart Crow is on in the West End is emblematic of cuntery, not a defense against it. You don't get your late-career telly programme turned into a West End show by being good. You get that by being a cunt.

He's written a tonne of lamebrain jukebox musicals too and (do we have to strain our brains to remember this?) a "celebration of the American President," George W. Bush. All built on an early career posing as a radical Socialist and disguised as one of the cool kids.

His books are not all complete shit. Stark, Gridlock, and This Other Eden were enjoyable at the time though, I suspect, a little dated now (in style more than subject matter). The others, dashed-off pish like Inconceivable, were obvious springboards into the kind of romcom-and-jukebox-musical-writing "success" he presumably craved from day one. You know, like a cunt would.

I wasn't defending Elton's political credentials or career aspirations, just his work ethic.

Also he's not going to invest in a West End production of his sitcom if he didn't think people weren't going to come along to see it. I don't remember The Wright Way show playing at the Criterion.

The Bush inauguration thing was massively hypocritical, yes. Is he a cunt? Don't know. Probably? But then it seems on CC that nearly everybody is a cunt in comedy so business as usual.

EOLAN

Was Elton a self-avowed socialist. I thought that he was just a comedian who rose at the time of Thatcher and his ire was focused on those in power. Rather than espousing political philosophy, which in some ways is fair enough for a comedian.
