Doom metal

I discovered Bell Witch recently, thanks to a joke on Twitter, and I learn they're doom metal. I imagine most bands won't do a double-album consisting of, effectively, one song, but it seems like a genre I might dip into a bit more. But then I went to the Wikipedia page and my eyes started glazing over with the sheer number of sub-genres so I thought I'd ask the smart folks on here for any recommendations.

The album I heard was "Mirror Reaper", and it's a fucking belter. Available on Youtube, should you feel like dipping in.

Captain Crunch

I love Bell Witch.  I used to really like a band called Grimpen Mire.  I always felt they were slightly overlooked, they toured with Conan who got more attention (people go mad for Conan), but I felt Grimpen Mire were a bit more interesting.  I made some flippant comment on facebook about them going quiet and turned out the main guy had died!  Blush.

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

Dopethrone by Electric Wizard is where I got started.

chveik

Harvey Milk, Courtesy and Good Will Towards Men
SUMAC, Love in Shadow (only tangentially, but you might enjoy it anyway)

idunnosomename

i like this old band called Black Sabbath

no but really English carriers of that early sound Cathedral, Witchfinder General. And Candlemass, Skepticism for Nordic stuff.
sorry if you know those inside out but the wiki page is really all over the place and far too catholic to help introduce the genre. so Exhorder are doom now are they? hmm

Gradual Decline

My doom faves don't really include classic acts such as Candlemas, Saint Vitus etc. I favour the extreme-metal deviations of doom...

EyeHateGod - Take as Needed for Pain (best album of the 90's? Yes, in our house)

Sleep - Jerusalem (sounds much better than the weaker Dopesmoker)

Khanate - Khanate
Khanate - Things Viral (my favourite 'doom' band live experience - genuinely suffered post-gig low frequency related fatigue)

Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics... (close tie with Dopethrone, admittedly)

The last.fm page for the genre tag might be more useful:

I once went to audition for a doom band in the days of MSN messenger. I confirmed in the afternoon that I'd still be coming and the guy started asking if I would grow my hair. Even aged 23 I was aggressively bald and told him that if the hair thing was important to them they should probably look elsewhere as growing it isn't an option. It was obviously a big deal to them so I declined to turn up. He got fairly shitty about it too.

Metalheads and the subgenres being what they are, can anyone tell me if a bald guitarist changes the genre or does it still pass as doom?

The Mollusk

You can only be bald in a metal band if you're a bassist or a drummer, everyone knows that! Unless you're in a dome metal band in which case it is a requirement that all the members be bald.

Shaky

Another shout-out for Cathedral. It signaled their move away from pure doom but The Ethereal Mirror is a fucking classic.

Captain Crunch

I prefer stuff without vocals (like Blown Out or Rotor) but there are a few doom bands with female vocals that are well worth checking out:

Undersmile, they split off into more shoegazey stuff sometimes but a track like 'Cutter's Choice' is amazing heavy doom but with different vocals:

https://undersmile.bandcamp.com/

Witch Mountain, closer to classic rock but that signer has got some proper lungs:

https://witchmountain.bandcamp.com/album/witch-mountain

Dark Castle, nice and stripped with just the drums, guitar and vocals:

Windhand, I need to check these out more, some of it is really sweet:

I had an old ninehertz compilation years and years ago featuring a band called Doom (but not that one).  No chance of finding them again.

Dropshadow

My favourite web-based repository for all things Doom is Opium Hum.

The owner knows his stuff...... I'd say I agree with his mini-reviews of what he offers a good 95% of the time. Just grab a selection and give it all a good listen. I know I have. Any albums with dead links you come across will almost certainly be found on Soulseek. Have a look at his other genres too; his tastes are very eclectic (the shoegaze section is also very nice).

jobotic

I love this by Japanese band Corrupted

I think it's doom

Shaky

Not strictly doom as they also mix in black metal, grindcore and stoner rock, but Beggar are great.

Pink Gregory

So in about 2017 or something Stuart Dahlquist and Edgy59 from Burning Witch did a collaboration under the name The Poisoned Glass

It's really quite good, been rediscovering it lately.

I saw that tour, Grimpen Mire were fucking great, overshadowed even Conan for me.  Tragically cut short.  Proper grimy straightahead doom.  Worth checking out Wiht as well, who I found around the same time.

Pink Gregory

One of the members of I *think* Harvey Milk did a record under the name Depression Blues a while ago, only got around to it recently, also very 'eavy.

Cheers for that, nice to see it spanning time not just focusing on new stuff.

I should really pay more attention to Obey The Riff (used to be Stonerobixx) and there's The Obelisk which is useful although I find he has too much tolerance for that horrible glitchy Torche-y stuff which I just can't get behind.

I rarely hear anything that I like as much as My Dying Bride or Year of No Light. The Bell Witch album cover was very doom metal but I don't remember a second from the album.

I saw the dude from Sleep doing a Collab with an electronic musician called The Bug at Roadburn, that was special. Good album too

Magnum Valentino

My Dying Bride's the one for me, too. Their doomiest album for me, the terribly-titled-and-covered Songs of Darkness Words of Light, has some delicious thick gloom to it, layers upon layers of black fog in your lungs, great atmos, as Eddie Hitler might observe. Their early EPs are also peak doom music, and their latest 2020 album and EP are absolutely brilliant too.

I listened to Mirror Reaper too, and like you say, can't remember a thing about it. An enjoyable in-the-moment 90 minute experience though.

Conan rules as well, brilliant song titles.

It's a shame because so much doom falls into that sort of stoner crossover thing with the same production tics. The stuff that qualifies as 'generic' is of no interest to me.

Is doom metal basically millenial Black Sabbath?

Black Sabbath definitely tried to evoke moods that doom metal explored further. I remember listening to Sabbath's Paranoid Album on acid and laughing at Electric Funeral because of its proto-doom elements. Like a scary Ozzy creeping up at you. I don't think you could call it millenial really either - My Dying Bride had been going for ages when this millenial got into them as a teenager. I was just four years old when their album Turn Loose the Swans was released (at the time I was more into brutal death).

Katatonia deserve a mention too. Cerys Matthews made some important doom metal albums with them like Brave Murder Day, although they got a little bit poppy with songs like Sleeper, My Twin and Mulder and Skully. Still good songs for what they are though.

I do enjoy a spot of doom metal played by a competent beat combo.

At the more extreme end of the spectrum is Buried at Sea, their album Migration is probably one of the most dense, heavy and hateful sounding things ever committed to tape:

I'm a big fan of Yob, their last album Our Raw Heart is a triumph. Live they're trouser ripplingly loud, but in a way that is pleasing not painful

Sleep are fucking ace too, The Sciences was a comeback album for the ages:

It was actually the dude from Earth and here's the album and Earth aren't really doom either

I'm posting here so I can come back tomorrow when I'm at work and bored and someone bumps this.

This is brilliant, and I will be listening to more Buried At Sea forthwith.

Noodle Lizard

Inter Arma are a newer band doing well at this sort of thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g82e8fOE3rQ

As have already been mentioned, My Dying Bride are about as good as anything with "doom" in the description got for me though.

Alas their output is limited to an album and an EP. The EP is on streaming sites but not the album.

Good old youtube has it though:
