I'd say it was more the case that the technology becomes successful because the porn industry adopts it - VHS won over Betamax because it was easier and cheaper for the porn makers to record on, even though Betamax was apparently better quality. Although, with porn now being a massive multi-billion dollar industry, maybe that factor isn't as important these days, and they'll be able to churn these out at the same rate as regular ones within a few years.
