Yes, the total puerility of his output was pushed so far that it comes full circle and just becomes strangely innocent, if anything.

I remember a Withnail and I thread a while ago where a few people said they don't find it funny or particularly well written. I posited that you can open the script on any page and point your finger randomly at any line and it would be something amazing ("We're coming back in here" was the example, incidentally). Now I'm not saying poo is Bruce Robinson or people who don't appreciate either are comedically tone deaf, but there is absolutely a high level of language skill going on in poo's best stuff. You can dislike it, but it's there.

I'm sorry, I really don't want to be too critical, but "language skill" is exactly the sort of thing I'm crazy about in comedy - hence this site - and I just don't see it. I also find the peurility - the obsession with semen, shit and shoving things up arses - entirely boring, repetitive and unamusing. You and pancreas seem to think people who don't find him funny are thick or something, that seems to be the subtext at times. It's judt not funny to me, and people comparing him to Chris Morris or Aphex Twin or whoever make me cringe

As did his comment about writing "internationally read papers" or whatever it was.

It's all just so Peter's Friends. Is it a middle class thing? * The notion of an academic writing clown cum jokes just seems crap to me, rather than an endless source of hilarity.

Pijlstaart really is amazing. I've been studying his post history to try and analyse exactly why the majority of what he writes is so fucking funny and I just can't figure it out, but there's a turn of phrase (or two) every single post that gives me a genuine laugh.

It's just a matter of taste. Language is a broad thing and liking 'language in comedy' won't cover everything. There must be tons of comedy you like that you're aware other people don't get, and you know what it feels like to appreciate the cadence or tone of a good bit of comic writing. I don't think we in the poo fan club like him as an affectation or statement, he just genuinely tickled our funny bones.  I don't care for the Boosh or lots of other empty whimsy, but what he wrote clicked with me. I don't think you're  aesthetically impoverished, but I do think you're missing out. But, hey, neither camp will convert the other. It's an interesting discussion and it's good to have one's tastes challenged and reflect on such things, your posts have been fine, not cunty at all.

I agree, it's just when you say a "high level of language skill", then I think of clever wordplay and such, and don't see any of that - in fact quite the opposite, I see a crude bluntness that I can't find any skill in. But yeah, I don't think you like him as an affectation either, I know people didn't see all the complexity I saw in Bellamy's People or wherever, so I get it.  Oh well. Good night all.

This is me, only I have an extra chip on my shoulder, and automatically don't laugh if I perceive even slightly someone is using a crutch or a mask to be amusing, and if it's got a layer of being utterly contrived on top of that, I just find it repellent, the very idea you'd use a crutch or even an entire artificial persona as setup for something pedestrian, and the low-hanging fruit just reeks - no amount of artifice can disguise reaching for the low-hanging fruits of "masked" sexism, "jokey" racism or things the body does, no matter the setup, no matter the coat. These are just puerile nonsense punchlines, automatically stripped of their comedy value.

I'm the opposite on that, it was what amused me about poo, that he was a middle aged man in a position of responsibility in society who spent his spare time writing about space clowns bumming people. Stripped of that context most of his stuff was just stupid, but situationally it was made funny by that context (imo).

That said, a lot of what he posted was still crap, but sometimes it just hit the mark perfectly in a way few others can.

Thank you for the positive responses. My original post was more in admiration of SGN's pro-Rock attitude. The description of myself was never intended as fishing for compliments.

I'm sure wer all have our own dysfunctions, but collectively our broad range of specialist areas of knowledge and viewpoints are what keeps this place interesting..

I would also like to add to the Pilj love-in - his post history is a thing of wonder and beauty. Also, while I understand the objections to the nature of the language he used (though most of my interactions with him were out-of-persona cycling-related), Poo's odd brand of absurdism led to the poetry recital competition, which was one of the most creative and funny things that the site produced in time I've been here.
