Ballad of Ballard Berkley

The School - All I Want from You is Everything

Thread regulars The School are a '60s-swathed indie-pop group from Cardiff. This is taken from their third LP, Wasting Away and Wondering.

Susanne Sundfør - Fade Away

Some sleek Scandinavian pop from the album Ten Love Songs, the third number one album in a row for Susanne Sundfør in her native Norway, but still relatively unknown in the UK.

Norton Canes

Was waiting to see who had the most taste by going for Susanne Sundfør. Fade Away was the one I put on Summersolstice 2015 but the track from Ten Love Songs I absolutely obsessed over was Delirious, the best Bond theme never used

Reverend And The Makers - Something To Remember

https://youtu.be/GFaL_Cz0JRA

English rock band from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Formed in 2005

From "Mirrors "

"The result is the sound of a band at the top of their game. The potential has always been there, but Mirrors harnesses it."

jamiefairlie

Richard Hawley - The World Looks Down

https://youtu.be/mwabUpVhbJ8

British guitarist, singer-songwriter and producer, born 17 January 1967 in Sheffield.

From "Hollow Meadows"

"These are brooding songs of love and loss and life, music for gown-ups in the best possible way, music for people who've lived."

Saint Saviour - Nobody Died

https://youtu.be/UmlX7HYrQiU

Becky Jones, better known as Saint Saviour, is an English musician from Stockton-On-Tees.

From "In The Seams"

"In The Seams is Saint Saviour's best yet, and if she carries on like this, she could well become an artist far, far beyond the circles that adore her already. Her songs go from North Sea turbulent to letting your heartache melt in whisky, coupled with a sense of renewal or giving things another shot."

Butchers Blind

Wade Jackson - Dark Mirror

"Taken from the Sydney, Australia singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist's album Whiskey Alpha Delta Echo. An 11-song collection that adds a perfect blend of hooks, harmonies, structured melodies and the right production for these songs.  Picture the amalgam of R.E.M., Big Star, Teenage Fanclub and naturally The Beatles."

Going to have to post a few stinkers now in case I get a reputation as some kind of tastemaker.

Talking of playlists, I compiled the 2014 thread entries on Spotify for anyone who's interested.

Brundle-Fly

Be Right Back - Dutch Uncles. Released on Memphis Industries in 2015.

Maybe held slightly in the shadow of similar sounding label mates, Field Music, but an excellent art pop outfit in their own right. Talented buggers.

Dutch Uncles are an English indie pop band from Marple, England. They are known for their use of atypical time signatures within a pop context, and the androgynous vocals of frontman Duncan Wallis. Their influences include Kate Bush, King Crimson, Steve Reich, XTC, and Talking Heads.

Thanks Clatts. And everybody here for your continuing great nominations. It goes to show to old gits like me that music is still in rude health and one just has to listen beyond the Brit Awards suspects to discover this.

Sarah Cracknell - It's Never Too Late

https://youtu.be/TB5tWmTVK_k

Sarah Cracknell (born April 12th 1967 in Chelmsford, Essex, England) is the lead vocalist of the pop group St Etienne

From "Red Kite"

"Red Kite, the first solo project in 15 years from former Saint Etienne vocalist Sarah Cracknell, is a cozy record, one that sounds comfortably lived-in upon first listen. Cracknell's voice has lost none of its luster, save a world-weary undertone that's developed"

The Apartments - The House That  We Once Lived In

https://youtu.be/wus5LA28Alk

Australian indie band, first formed in 1978 in Brisbane

From "No Song No Spell No Madrigal"

"Yes, fans have something to be very happy about, because the album has some of Walsh's best tracks - atmosphere-soaked, heartfelt, elegant ballads which haven't totally shed his earlier post-punk leanings"

jamiefairlie

The Innocence Mission - Washington Field Trip

https://youtu.be/qJPyYXAV2UI

From "Hello I Feel the Same"

"...reflective, atmospheric, grounded by Karen's voice and this supreme detail in her lyrics about the everyday.  Simple images rendered quite beautifully."

Yeah, likewise - thanks to everyone for the recommendations. I'm happy to try and keep doing Spotify playlists when I get the chance as it's too good a thread to end up disappearing down the forum when it finally reaches the present day.

Samantha Crain - Kathleen

Samantha Crain is a folk and folk-rock singer songwriter of Choctaw heritage, from Shawnee, Oklahoma. This track appears on her fourth album, Under Branch and Thorn and Tree.

The Leaf Library - Tilting

https://youtu.be/DXahqYX234w

started out in Reading after Matt Ashton's previous band (John Peel favourites Saloon) split in 2004

From "Daylight Versions "

"full of wonderfully woozy, drone-pop tunes about meteorology, the seasons and the incoming sea; from songs about the ghostly Suffolk coastline to the slowly rising waters of London marshes, these ten tracks channel the warm fuzz of Yo La Tengo, the spacious repetition of Talk Talk and Movietone's seaside melancholy to beautiful effect."

jamiefairlie

The Left Outsides - Out of Time; Out of Place

https://youtu.be/y3nFTIaOj4g

From "The Shape of Things to Come "

"Its ethereal folk and dreamy psychedelic songs have the power to hypnotise. Heartfelt, introspective Englishness has never sounded so good"

jamiefairlie

The Leisure Society - Tall Black Cabins

https://youtu.be/RGb1vrhvJh0

From "The Fine Art Of Hanging On"

"The Fine Art of Hanging On is another capably written set, but turns its back on the band's pared-down folk roots in favour of baroque-pop arrangements that reach for the heights of Rufus Wainwright and Illinoise-era Sufjan Stevens"

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

The Spook School - Burn Masculinity

I first nominated this thrillingly gender political Edinburgh band back in 2013. This is the opening track from their second album, Try to Be Hopeful. In your face, L*n*h*n.

Mikal Cronin – Made My Mind Up

Hook-filled guitar pop from MCIII, the third solo album by longtime Ty Segall collaborator Mikal Cronin.

Dick Diver - Year in Pictures

Not really sure about the name, but apparently this Australian four-piece took it from the name of a character in an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. This is from their third album, 2015's Melbourne, Florida. As a jangly Australian guitar band, they received inevitable comparisons to the Go-Betweens, but this one has some shades of early Prefab Sprout, to my ear. Since they don't seem to have released anything since, presumably they are no longer a going concern.

Brundle-Fly

Shades Of Blue - Eska. Released on Earthling Recordings in 2015.

This was one of those 6Music rotation tracks for awhile. Why weren't Radio One behind it? I'm sure it coulda been a contender. Mind you, my other half has literally just come in the room to ask me what is that awful shit I'm listening too. Oh well.

Eska Mtungwazi is a Zimbabwe-born (1971) and Lewisham, London-raised singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist.

This Is The Kit - Cold And Got Colder

https://youtu.be/A8H15RLF1Ck

From "Bashed Out"

"It's an understated yet absorbing work, full of delicate arrangements that are elegantly swept along by Stables' gloriously tender vocals. "

jamiefairlie

Twerps - Back to You

https://youtu.be/7n-3z3vkLFg

From "Range Anxiety"

"Twerps are an Australian band that works exclusively in chime and charm, with guitars jangling in brisk rhythms beneath warm and fuzzy melodies. They've named the Clean's "Anything Could Happen" as their gold standard and the Go-Betweens as a formative influence, and the music is enjoyable for its simple pleasures"

jamiefairlie

Vetiver - Edgar

https://youtu.be/pMVJ6zfG-Dw

From "Complete Strangers"

"This collection of gauzy, rainy day indie-folk doesn't seem to congeal into a uniform effort, but instead gives each adjacent track the elbow room afforded to the unfamiliar."

Pipped me to the post, James!

Weyes Blood - Cardomom

https://youtu.be/Hhn6m7AHRmc

From "Cardomom Times"

" sounds like a lush, pristine folk-rock gem rescued from the 1960s. Project leader Natalie Mering sings with a dusky, soulful soprano that draws you into her world as well as into a larger tradition, and her arrangements are at once classic and sneakily innovative"

jamiefairlie

Wire - Burning Bridges

https://youtu.be/9h4Ur4hagMY

From the album "Wire"

"An album that finds Wire once again proving that they're still one of the most inventive and exciting bands around"

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Simon Love & Stewart Lee - The Meaning of Love

Simon Love is a Welsh singer/songwriter and former frontperson for The Loves. Stewart Lee is a comedian who has let himself go.

This Stax-waxed track (oh yeah), which is taken from Love's debut solo album It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time, features Lee reading from the Wikipedia entry for the complex and abstract nature of love.
