Oh shit, try the guys other game, it's even better!

Maho shoe

This is much tighter. You can see how far he's come from the last game!

Collecting the medals will build your "1 up" gauge along the top of the screen.
you get an extra life when that's full.
This is also tied to scoring since at the end of the game you get a bonus for how many lives you have left.

Keep shooting baddies until you fill the gauge on the left. This gauge determines how long you can spend as the second character. Then you can switch to the more powerful character, and stay as her until the gauge on the left nearly runs out if you like, but the idea is to fill up the gauge on the right and then switch back to the first character before that gauge on the left runs out completely and when you do that, you shoot a big purple gem and that'll give you loads of medals when it hits enemies.

Here's an example, you can see that I haven't bothered staying as the second character for hardly any time at all here as I want to cash out against this big enemy. As you can see, you can also fill up the gauge on the right as the first character once you've built up the one on the left.

Gauges may fill quicker the closer you are to enemies, not sure.

Really good fun!

Very much enjoying that mini DOJ on the Switch.

Anyone with a Switch and a JPN account, get Dodonpachi Daioujou DX. It's really good! Less than a fiver. Got to the True Last Boss before with no bombs left and fluked it down to half health. Hopefully get the clear tomorrow, I'm knackered today.

I thought this would be a bit of a joke but it's a lot of fun and it gets nicely challenging. I also really enjoy the trimmed down stages, there's no repetition, just one new wave after another like a mini highlight reel. Bosses also go down pretty quickly, phases don't go on so long but they cycle through them nicely.

Chedney Honks

Clumpster, uploaded a DOJ DX clear if you wanna see:

a) What it's like

b) Me stride through the first four stages and then bimble my way over the line.

c) A great little game.

Nice one! I'll watch that tonight.
It looks adorable! I hope it comes to pc. Hope they do all the other cave flip phone games as well, there were a fair few of them apparently.

edit: Aw man. Losing that extend as soon as you picked it up.
Sickener!

Woah, shit gets real on stage 4! I thought normal would be nice and slow and gentle all the way through but it really kicks up a notch there!

Was beaming at the end when you took on the final boss with no lives left :D Clutch!

I hate moments like that, always feels like it shaves at least a month off the end of my life :D

Chedney Honks

Cheers for watching, I enjoyed that last bit! I rarely bomb enough playing these games anyway, but having no lives encourages you to just go for the dodges. I knew I'd need at least one for the washing machine albeit it's more like water down the plughole in the port.

That bit where I died at the 'zippers' in stage 4 is a total shitter in the proper game, no idea how to do it. I've been playing a bit recently and that tends to be near where I come to an end. I probably try to macro it too much, need to just hold my nerve and squeeze through the walls.

Just gone back to the 360 version for a run and it feels like it's running at 120fps in comparison! And where are all these bullets coming from?! Didn't make it past stage two boss so the port has clearly broken my muscle memory :)

Haha, yeah, it seems different enough to be it's own thing, but not different enough that it wouldn't mess with your memory and royally fuck you over when you go back to the real thing!

I like how a couple of bosses from dodonpachi are repeated in that last stage. "The gangs all here!". Nice bit of fan service.

Yeah, I had a couple of goes of doj when you were banging on about it a while back and stage 4 was always where it ended.

I fired up the first donpachi in shmupmame the other day, and wow, that is easy peasy compared to the later games, at least with the blue ship, using the wide shot mostly. I got to the final boss on like my third go or something!
Was gonna try and get the 1cc on that but I got sidetracked by daffy doujins.

I've done dodonpachi, so after that, I'll have to move on to the ginger step son!

Wow, this is fantastic!
Just a one stage demo so far but it's really promising!

Second Legacy

I think the idea is to point blank a few popcorn enemies and then use the focus shot to get blue gems which build up the gauge.

Then you press hyper and anything you hit with the focus shot drops lots of stars.

Then just before the gauge runs out you press hyper again and that gives you a powerful laser just as the hyper is ending.

Feels amazing!
Not too keen on the bullet wobble, but I did get used to it really quick.

Cleared this game called Hishou Ayu last night.

I like how it's nice and chill but the bullets are still quite fast.
It's very simple mechanically and the bullet patterns are pretty simple too, but it's nice and nippy and good fun!

Not entirely sure on the scoring, but you can hold up to three hypers which makes your shot more powerful for like 30 seconds or something and when you start off the hyper you cancel bullets in a small radius around you, so I think it's all about hypering as much as possible and keeping your chain going.

After you beat the game you unlock hard mode which I had a quick try of, the bullets get faster and it feels great! Once you've ran through normal, you know all the simple patterns so hard mode sort of makes it way more fun and exciting without adding too much to the difficulty.
Hoping to get a chance to play through that mode tonight.

You get to fight a frog, if that helps sell it.

There's your score to beat - 4,425,150

I actually scored better on my first go where I died on the last stage!
Ignore the hi-score at the top of the screen, that's not mine, it's the devs. He updated and uploaded the game and forgot to clear his scores I think!

That capcom arcade stadium thingy came out on pc today.

Tried the free game, 1943 and it feels very nippy to me.
Playing at 144hz, vsync off with all the daft cabinet settings turned off or low.
Very similar to shmupmame in terms of input lag. No problems there.
I don't know how the other games fair, but that one plays well.

There is some slight hitching in the scrolling though, which isn't too bad, but it's ultra smooth in shmupmame, so it's still preferable.
Must be the forced triple buffering on consoles that's causing most of the input lag problems. Runs OK on pc.

Nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. For the none computer savvy folk who just want a hassle free, pay your money, plug and play experience, going off that one game, I wouldn't talk people out of getting it.

There's your score to beat. Not bad for a first go!

Pinball

Darius Gaiden. Nice fish :-) Beautiful soundtrack too.

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/darius-gaiden/

Yes mate!
Honks got me into that one.

It's trippy as anything. I'm clean as a whistle, sharp as a thistle the noo but just before I gave up the heavy drink/druggin, I was playing that for a high score competition and it genuinely felt like things were starting to unravel at times!
Got a scrub clear, but didn't win :(

G-darius got the m2 treatment recently and that's great fun, I think I prefer it to gaiden - https://store.playstation.com/ja-jp/product/JP0305-CUSA19340_00-GDARIUSHD0000000
I like the bits where you make friends with the big fishes and the game turns into a sort of escort mission, you're like protecting them as they do big damage.
and then the big counter beam. Bwwwwawawawa.
Was squeaking and clapping like a happy mouse when this first happened :D - https://streamable.com/b2e69v

I think this is my best score.
I've only just done the easy routes.
Loads of game there for when you start learning the other routes!

Yeah, they're worth playing just for the far out space jazz soundtracks alone!

Have you played Natsuki Chronicles, pinball? My favourite game of the year so far. Feels very Darius at times - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1175190/Natsuki_Chronicles/

Electric Underground is a good shmup channel, I find.

Yeah, Mark's a good lad. He's got a review of Dangun Feveron coming up soon.
Wonderful game, love how fast it is and it keeps you moving constantly, swinging back and forth across the screen grabbing the discomen like you're dancing in time with the music.
"Heaven is here inside my soul!"
Had some good fun with the recent M2 port earlier this year. The arrange mode is great fun!

Love cave much better when they go completely batshit.
Muchi muchi pork, chubby lasses in latex on hoverbikes shooting lard beams at an evil chicken.

We doing shmup-adjacent games here?
May as well, if only to irk the purists.

This is intense!

Alien Death mob

Unashamedly brainless twin-stick arena shooter.
It's great fun!

Collect the sirens to call in the waaambulance and it'll throw you some weapon pickups.

Was looking at the new EDF game last night and they revealed the price today :S

So let's all get this instead!

Clear nods to EDF, there's a stage where you're on the beach and they all invade from the ocean and it's totally that stage in edf but top down :D

Woohoo, got my first five star clear!

Got at least 3 stars on every stage, so I'm calling that a normal clear.

Great fun. A no brainer for the price.
Will try and get 5 stars on the ones I'm missing.

Yus! Take that, alien scum! All the stars, baby.
Form an orderly queue to feel my muscles!

Mark's Dangun review is up.

Quote from: madhair60 on May 20, 2021, 11:55:07 AMIn fact some fat, useless cunt reviewed that one: https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/nintendo-switch/shmup_collection

Their games are on sale at the minute so I decided to pick up wolflame on the strength of that.
I'm not big on those mech platformer games, and I don't really like teleportation mechanics so I skipped zangeki warp and I have the others so I just went with that one.
I can remember cacking my knickers and running a mile from the demo after the first sniper tank stole my dinner money, but it's not so bad at all, normal mode at least.

Effing state of this though. Double KO on the final boss.

Same thing happened with the final boss of zenohell the other week

Did I murder someone in a past life or something? :D That can't be just bad luck!

I really love the weapons in this game, they're all viable and mixing and matching them strategically will be a big part of the harder difficulties, I'd imagine.
Looking forward to jumping up to hard once I get the clear.

it's good!

Anyone else think that the music on level 1 of Truxton 2 sounds like a 90s game show? Going for Gold vibes.

Ha, yeah, goes a bit record breakers here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r-2z5BP7Eg&t=73s

Have you played Jet Buster?
The soundtrack is very much in that style!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSQLJZGRyI4&t=222s

Cold Meat Platter

Yeah, relentlessly cheery stuff :) No, not played that though. Jet Buster is such an old school nonsensical name though, I assume influenced by Air Buster.

Yeah. A joyous, bouncy stage 1 theme is what you want. Plays a huge part in drawing you back in for another shot.

You want pure optimism and fun, not some ominous military dirge, "oh christ, there's another 10p down the swanee".
It has to sing "this is the one, this is my 1cc! Lollipops and rainbows! Let's go!"

Muchi muchi pork nails it! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTb0FEaqsv4

No miss to DOJ St 4 again. Fed my way through because I got no real strats but St 5 seems so so much harder again. You can't speed kill fast enough to really reduce the number of bullets, so it comes down to almost constant herding and very tight dodging. I can feel myself getting better at certain sections but it's a question of both strats and being really good at finding tight routes under sustained intense pressure.

I may never do it because of time, age and motivation but I do also think the skill barrier is incredibly, improbably high!

The St 5 boss isn't actually that bad, probably flukeable on a good day with a handful of bombs. TLB is an absolute clown, I was just laughing.

Yeah, I remember playing that stage and feeling like it had suddenly turned into ketsui!

Stage five on dodonpachi is a bloody nightmare as well. When you get to stage 6, it feels like a nice leisurely stroll to the finish line by comparison.

You're the guy who just jumps straight into playing ultra mode, so you'll probably not listen, but maybe you should work your way up, Honks! You'll pull your shmup muscle putting so much on the bar like that.
Might be an idea to play some of the easier games in the series first. Donpachi, Daifukkatsu and dodonpachi are all easier than doj black label.

A change is as good as a rest and you'll teach yourself strats that'll translate, I'd imagine.

Wolflame normal 1cc in the bag!

Can anyone recommend a couple of these that are avaiilable on PS4? I've not played anything like this since my early teens, but this thread has had me all nostalgic.

Quote from: DenzilHolles on May 29, 2021, 01:39:44 PMI've not played anything like this since my early teens, but this thread has had me all nostalgic.

I'll assume you'll be rusty then!

The Aleste collection has some nice gentle games in there and that'll stroke your nostalgia receptors nicely.
Even though I hadn't played the games, the 8 bit stylings had me feeling like a nipper playing on the nes again.

Cotton reboot. The arrange is more about scoring than being a hard clear, but it does have some tricky bosses. That should be OK.
I believe that's coming to the west soon if you want to hang on.

Dangun Feveron is nails but the fever arrange is toned down and great fun, there's an easy mode as well, I think.

Natsuki chronicles has an easy mode and is fabulous.

Nex Machina is godly if you fancy a twin stick.

If you're wanting something a bit cheaper, void gore is a nice daft endless procedurally generated game that'll scratch the itch, and if you don't have ways to emulate old arcade games, the hamster arcade archives are well done - http://www.hamster.co.jp/american_hamster/arcadearchives/title_list_aa.htm

You can get Battle Garegga and Ketsui on the PS4, two of the very best top tier shoot em ups ever made. They also have plenty of modes and settings to ease you back in and tweak things to your liking. They'd be my recommendations. Amazing soundtracks and art design and incredible depth to the scoring and tactics if you fnd they really click.

I only have DFK and SDOJ, but to be honest I'm just enjoying playing for the sake of it and gradually improving by credit feeding and seeing more of the later stages. Not long ago, stage 3 was an impossible barrier. Now I've kind of got half of stage 4 locked down. I feel like I see different patterns better for playing this way instead of relying on muscle memory and microscopic score chasing. No stress or goals really, just giving it some time and seeing how things go.

I'm mixing it up with some Ketsui (probably harder), Muchi (nice and fun) and Esp 2 BL (good but I enjoyed 1 more from what I played at Arcade Club). Still enjoying a bit of the Aleste Collection here and there. Not doing much gaming at the mo but predominantly shmupping when I do.

Good work on the 1CC. You're racking them up at the moment!

Thanks, man!

Yeah man, just keep credit feeding and having fun.
It's the sanest and most fun way.
One day you'll just do it and realise that your pocket is still bulging with 10p bits, enough to get a bag of chips on the way home to celebrate!
