Quote from: Rich Uncle Skeleton on July 26, 2022, 10:19:49 AMTV Movie is a special kind of bad (especially on an album that should be this career defining classic but sunk by some right filler). but the unintended comedy value of Silence definitely wins it.

Love that not only did they have the neck to play Silence live back then but on the only recording I've heard the crowd goes nuts for it and it got a special mention in a gig review!

I don't think I've ever seen them do Silence live. Or if I did I've blanked it out. But when they played Finsbury Park after This Is Hardcore released, they did every track off it except I'm A Man. Which certainly wouldn't be the one I'd drop.

Anyway, did you know that apparently Pulp have never done exactly the same set twice. Can't verify it not having seen every concert they've ever played. But I'm hoping Shakespeare Rock, Turkey Mambo Momma and Being Followed Home will make an appearance this time. From before they sold out.

New page Pulp diction.

What, I love TV Movie! A Little Soul is easily the worst song off that mildly overrated album.

SteveDave

I went to the launch party of "This Is Hardcore" at the Park Lane Hilton. The invite (courtesy of Alex at Pulp People) said 9pm start and me and my friend got there dead on 9, got our wristbands and took the lift to whatever floor it was on. We heard live music and ran into a room to see Pulp soundchecking in street clothes. We were shooed away by Jarvis and went to the free bar where they weren't measuring anything. The night passed in a blur but Danny from Supergrass apologised to me after I shoulder barged him and I did a wee next to Jamie Theakston.

16 year old me may agree with you "fuck this Phil Collins shit" but 16 year old me was wrong.

I really like TV Movie too. Hardcore is one of those albums where there's probably 2 different albums in there, particularly considering outtakes like Dirty World and the Professional.

The Professional and Cocaine Socialism are definitely in my top ten Pulp songs ever. And I used to drink in the Grove pub - as mentioned in Street Operator - on my trips to London. Although I've never seen Jarvis in there. but I knew he lived nearby,

JohnnyCouncil

I worked a close walk from the Grove pub for the last 6 years. Had no idea, and never went there. Dammit.

SweetPomPom

Genuinely surprised they're doing more, thought they were pretty much perfect in 2011. Candida's hands looked absolutely fucked though.

Missed the big Finsbury Park show but my first was when they played a tent in the park around 92
But bring it on, as long they they're playing My Legendary Girlfriend.

jobotic

I saw Pulp when they were supported by Stereolab at Brixton Academy. I got hammered and although I enjoyed Stereolab (who I was there for really) I can't remember anything about Pulp. My friends couldn't find me after and a security bloke woke me up passed out in front of the stage.

Jealous? Beat that Jockice!

Blur were there as well?

Surely it's high time they bought "Tunnel" to the live set. Come on lads, don't disappoint me again. 45 minute extended Tunnel jam or GTFO

they'd better, I know it was on the longlist during rehearsals in 2011 but never made it to a gig. His N Hers only got played once during a warm up gig too* which was a pity but can't really complain, the fact they were playing at all was brilliant/bizarre.

*on that subject, the gig's up here if anyone fancies it. one of the better recordings from 2011, "Festival set" then a cracking encore

I can't. I once missed most of their set because the person I was with (a well-known music journalist) decided after about 30 seconds that they were shit and marched off to the bar. A few months later she was claiming they were brilliant and recently messaged me about the time we'd seen them together. Er, I did sneak back in and watch a couple of songs but you stayed in the bar for the whole set...

Long time ago though. Early 90s. A schoolmate lived in Camberwell at the time and was also quite matey with Jarvis so I'd see him at parties etc occasionally. Just never in the Grove though.

But another school friend once bumped into Jarvis there who was apparently quite rude to him. Strange. Especially since they have the same birthday.

Opinions like this should carry a custodial sentence.

Am I to infer from all this that people actually like Seductive Barry

I do. For the first five hours or so.

I'm not sure but didn't OU and Countdown immediately get dropped and never returned to the setlist?

sutin

As much as My Legendary Girlfriend is one of the best songs ever, Jarv Is... played it pretty perfectly on last year's tour, i'd rather Pulp played a song i've never heard live before.

Small Man Big Horse

I was at one of those gigs, iirc there were two consecutive nights with the same line up, but I really didn't get on with Stereolab (though I'm much fonder of them now) and shamefully my friend and I heckled them by making lots of bleeping noises during one song, it was only for thirty seconds but all these years on I'm still embarrassed by my drunken idiocy.

I was lucky in that I saw them about ten times from the mid-nineties to the early two thousands (with about half being festival appearances), but I have to confess I've no urge to see them again, if only because of my shit knee would mean sitting down for the majority of the gig while my brain would want to be jumping up and down at the front.

dontpaintyourteeth

would just like to say I just listened to The Will to Power and I would like to reiterate that it's  absolutely worse than anything on This is Hardcore

They did Countdown at their last proper show at Sheffield Arena in 2012.

What do you like about? I'm genuinely asking. It sounds like a Snow Patrol ballad to me.

I'm almost definitely alone on this but i've never been too fussed on This Is Hardcore (the song) either. It's an impressive piece of work but I could almost never be arsed listening to it. I usually skip about half of This Is Hardcore whenever I listen to it, I much prefer We Love Life and Jarvis's first solo LP.

As does any sane individual.

sutin

Ha, I feel like we've had this conversation before on the Jarvis thread a while back.

This Is Hardcore could be a great LP if it they cut about 20 minutes off it, which would make it about normal length.

JohnnyCouncil

Late 90s syndrome, all the post fame records got really really long.

Ah I'm joking really, I think it's a good little song and it hardly outstays its welcome. I also like This Is Hardcore (the song and the album) so we might just be polar-Pulp-opposites.

JohnnyCouncil

Despite it's flaws, for me Hardcore was great because the band had moved on. When DC was released I was 13 and Pulp became 'my band' and probably the biggest inspiration as to why I play music to this day. Also, it's a record for outsiders and that's exactly how I felt.

By 16 I wanted something more expansive (and darker) and this (along with Smashing Pumpkins Adore) showed how bands and their music could evolve.

I do like This Is Hardcore, I just like it the least of the Island albums. It still has some of their best ever songs on it (along with a ton of filler).

Separations if you please!
