Russell Brand - now "a Christian" [split topic]

Quote from: Operty1 on July 24, 2024, 02:30:23 PMWhy would anyone in America care what Russell Brand's opinions of the Presidential Candidates are? Is he that politically influential there?

6 million or so subscribers, not all of whom are doing so for a laugh, one would think. Numbers doesn't automatically mean influence, of course, but it's more likely to correlate than if he had 500 subscribers and was doing politics from his shed.

Quote from: Dr Rock on July 24, 2024, 02:22:44 PMM.I.A. is now a Christian also. Got baptised and everything. Hmm

I don't think there's nothing wrong with sincerely finding religion (though it's not for me).
Just in Russel's case it's transparently to gain favour with Bible-belt Americans.  And/or to atone for being a rapist.

Why do you think it's bad in M.I.A's case?  I've always quite liked her music, but not paid too much attention to the politics it stands for.  But she seemed a decent sort?
[EDIT] Just looked her up and apparently she's an anti-vaxxer 5G nutter now.  FFS.

6 million people is surprising, one assumes that's global. I used to follow Brand a long while back, his Radio show and Ponderland. Was never keen on his stand up, but i've read a few of his books. His films and acting were entirely forgettable from what i've seen. He seems to be an absolute nightmare to know in real life. I can't see how his new found Christianity chimes with his current output and who he supports, some of what Trump and Vance have been spouting has been crazy. But then, i would say his pre Trews self doesn't chime with what he's made himself out to be now. He doesn't have a Matt Morgan to puncture the self absorbed pomposity bubble and point out when he's being obnoxious to the world. He is now a man with a complete addiction to the smell of his own farts, and it seems 6 million people are happy to watch him inhale.

One thing about subscribers though. I have seen streamers with 3 million plus subscribers, but only ever get around 45k per stream. I don't know how this works, if there are bot followers or something else? Also, have seen when streamers post videos and within seconds these videos have thousands of views, despite being hours in length, so again have no idea how these numbers work or how accurate they are?

No, but he's that desperate. Just another right wing idiot pundit for RM Brown to rip on.

There are many things in my life I'm happy to admit to being wrong about, but Brand has got to top the list. Sticking up for him in the '10s while he got shit for his political comments, and of course he actually always has been the vapid, thoughtless ideologue people said. It's clear now that if it wasn't for someone like Matty Morgan taking the piss out of him, there would never have been any pretence of humility or self-awareness.

But there I was for so long - standing in front of a puddle, desperately telling people it was an ocean. More fool me.

I'm a big fan, but she has maybe lost the plot of late. She's been through a lot.  She says she saw a vision of Jesus Himself.

I remember her giving interviews to socialist magazines back during her first flush of fame, so she's gone quite a long way too.

McChesney Duntz

Pretty sure nobody of any value here in the States gives the first, slightest fuck about Russell Brand. He's bloviating into a troll-and-bot-filled echo chamber.

Red82

I've seen people claiming to have foreseen Russell Brands far right turn but surely it was pretty fucking unforeseeable twenty years ago. See also Glenn Greenwald/ Matt Taibi.

All these cunts are social media addicts that's the problem. Twitter has rotted their brains.

I think the Fox crew like him because it can be portrayed as some road to Damascus-like conversion they can peddle - to them it's "here's this British rock and roll ex drug addict hellraiser who used to talk about being wild and free but who's now realised being right wing and in thrall to Trump is correct."

I wouldn't say he's a megastar over there but I also wouldn't minimise his profile either - his marriage to Katy Perry did make him tabloid fodder for a while and he had the whole MTV Awards scandal thing that raised his profile. Plus he had leading roles in a couple of Apatow vehicles and did Letterman and the talk show circuit a bunch of times. I'd wager the average American knows exactly who Brand is, at least through the lens of his work over there.

McChesney Duntz

I should clarify that, yes, a lot of Americans may know who he is, but they still don't give the first, slightest fuck about him. (Did his short-lived, highly embarrassing US chat show Brand X slither back over the pond at all? What an utter cringe-fest that was...)

I think even when he was at his biggest in America it was a bit of a joke how he was the best we could send across the Atlantic to break the US

While I'd be delighted if this was the case, where is this absolute certainty coming from?

MIA being antivaxx isn't remotely surprising tbh, she's always been a bit of a conspiracy theorist. And I say this as someone who actually likes her stuff.

I'm an American. Haven't you noticed? Absolute certainty without any stats or facts to back it up is kinda our, um, brand.

His stuff about not voting was pretty inane but he had a brief phase of putting out pretty decent content. I specifically remember his campaign to stop poor people in London being kicked out of their neighbourhood by developers.

It's very much a stopped clock thing, he was in the right for a moment but it turns out that it was just him trying on different personalities and he doesn't really believe in anything except himself.

He never recovered after that goalkeeping clanger against Southampton.

Speaking of which, guess who else has decided he's a Christian?
QuoteRev with a difference Jamie Franklin sits down with Premier League and all-round legend Matthew Le Tissier.
They spoke about Matt's life, his career as a top football professional with Southampton and England and his subsequent life as a pundit, after-dinner speaker, and very good golf player. They also covered Matt's decision to air his views on the Covid situation, his sacking by Sky Sports, and his inside take on what Premier League players really think about the politicisation of football. They touched on Matt's recently found Christian faith and where this fits into what he sees as a societal and cosmic battle between good and evil.
In Rev'd Jamie's monologue, he provides a Christian interpretation of recents events in the US and the CofE's latest 'guidance' on teaching transgender ideology in their schools, and he answers a couple of emails on how Christians should engage under the new Labour regime and the thorny question of hell.

It's so predictable with these people. (I noticed in an article about Kevin Campbell that Le Tissier now has a crucifix in his Twitter header, googled 'Matt Le Tissier Christian' and got this.)

I'm guessing this Reverend Jamie is another Calvin Robinson.

Do you think this cunt ever looks at his Youtube comments and hates himself? He should. Utterly craven soft soapery on miserable display here once again and in all his coverage.

Where are Swahali people from?

Personally I find nationalism unpleasant but I don't reject the right for other people to have patriotism or be proud of being British, or even to want to protect "British values" though I would question how you define that. The problem is of course that all of those things are often just smokescreens for racism, xenophobia and intolerance.

When this dick keeps bringing everything back to globalism and the liberal elite why doesn't he also add that it is the reactionary elite that want to sow this discontent and foment culture wars to distract from the real issues. He might say it in that video. I don't know I couldn't take more than three minutes of his waffling word salad nothingness

I always find this strange.  Do we have to believe someone who said this, just to be polite?

Not in the sense of thinking someone didn't genuinely have a personal experience, or denigrating their faith or whatever; just when someone takes an extreme about-face on their personality and values.

And which Southampton player was it who scored? It's ALL PART OF GOD'S PLAN.

I met this woman in the course of my studio work (she was a singer) who told me that Jesus was floating, up on the wall of the control room we were in (she pointed to where he was) and was talking to her and that this happened to her on a daily basis. Gobsmackingly spooky, but other than that she seemed quite normal.

Cunt's already declared that Trump is the only hope for democracy.
