Sounds like it was the cast's gut instinct that the funny couldn't overcome the seriousness of handling a gun in character or even on set.

Have many other light-hearted comedies had success introducing a gun into proceedings? (contemporary shows - historical stuff like Blackadder doesn't count)

Trailer Park Boys regularly features the characters waving/firing guns around, and Arrested Development had a few of the characters wielding firearms.

But yeah it is otherwise fairly rare to see.

Wasn't that the moment where everyone involved in the show realised that Michael Richards' gift for physical comedy was something they could rely upon for Big Laughs? Up until then, Kramer was just Jerry's oddball neighbour.

I can only guess it's because they only made that decision after it came out - isn't it only the second or third episode? If the pilot wasn't broadcast, then I suppose technically it's the FIRST which might explain why it sports a major inconsistency with the remaining few hundred.

Trailer Park Boys is centred around a group of petty criminals, so it does make a bit more sense in that world, it was ingrained in the shows DNA from the start. I can deffo see how it would be jarring if you suddenly introduce that to the Seinfeld vibe, even if it is set in New York.

Honestly, I feel a little squeamish about the idea of an episode where Jerry buys a gun and Elaine keeps pointing it at herself, kind of glad they demurred.

They both do. And in The Race, that guy has a starter pistol. And as mentioned earlier there's a dream sequence where Jerry gets shot. Different contexts, different feelings.

I don't like Newman, but that's just because I don't like the actor very much. I used to watch third rock from the sun as a frustrated teenager and I hated that he got to be with the sexy alien and it made me angry. Infact, I don't even call him Newman because of that, I call him third rock from the sun.

I did like the first appearance of Newman though where you only hear his voice and you can hear that he is clearly voiced by Larry David.

Glad I'm not the only one with a grudge against actors based on their other work.

It goes deeper though. I told my wife about my hatred of Newman and she pointed out that in the famous Sharon Stone scene where she uncrosses her legs, who's in the same room staring straight at the garden of Eden? Third rock from the sun/Newman!

why did they build up Crazy Joe Davola for all of season 4, then cut away from his "attack" at the end without following up on it at all? did I miss something? Is the joke just that it amounted to absolutely nothing?

Thanks for posting that, it's great. Laughed out loud severals time while reading it, it was like having a brand new episode of Seinfeld in my head. But there is a mean-spiritedness to parts of it that reminded me of the finale, and one thing George said made me wince, here in 2024.

Yep, thanks for the link. Not only interesting to read a whole new episode but also cool to have the little notes on there to show how they made adjustments here and there.

I can kind of see now why they gave up making it though, it just feels off. I think the quote from Larry Charles about the darkness enveloping the humour rings true.
