Quote from: The Mollusk on April 01, 2024, 12:40:21 PMFor an extra layer of shamelessness that name was first used in the Brass Eye special. IRL a paediatrician had had their home vandalised because of the tabloid lynch mob mentality, and in the Brass Eye episode Morris plays on this by reporting that a man named Peter File had been attacked.

Starting to think Gary might be a bit of a cunt.

He wrote for BrassEye didn't he? So he can't claim not to know.

On the subject of controversy, I've always found it baffling that they considered this episode too dark and controversial to finish filming

Sounds like it was the cast's gut instinct that the funny couldn't overcome the seriousness of handling a gun in character or even on set.

Have many other light-hearted comedies had success introducing a gun into proceedings? (contemporary shows - historical stuff like Blackadder doesn't count)

El Unicornio, mang

Trailer Park Boys regularly features the characters waving/firing guns around, and Arrested Development had a few of the characters wielding firearms.

But yeah it is otherwise fairly rare to see.

It's Always Sunny did a good episode about it

They did have Jerry being gunned down by the police in slow motion but I guess that was a dream sequence so it's ok?

One of my favourite bits of Kramer slapstick is a really early one, where he's trying to unload a bag of cement into a washing machine.

Wasn't that the moment where everyone involved in the show realised that Michael Richards' gift for physical comedy was something they could rely upon for Big Laughs? Up until then, Kramer was just Jerry's oddball neighbour.

Apparently there was a reason why Male Unbonding was the only episode name that didn't start with 'The' - anyone know why?

I can only guess it's because they only made that decision after it came out - isn't it only the second or third episode? If the pilot wasn't broadcast, then I suppose technically it's the FIRST which might explain why it sports a major inconsistency with the remaining few hundred.

Yeah I think that's right. The other crucial scene they cite is when he goes round to retrieve the statue in The Statue and pretends to be a cop

Trailer Park Boys is centred around a group of petty criminals, so it does make a bit more sense in that world, it was ingrained in the shows DNA from the start. I can deffo see how it would be jarring if you suddenly introduce that to the Seinfeld vibe, even if it is set in New York.

Dr Rock

I'd give George a Magnum 44, Elaine a katana, Kramer a giant mallet, and Jerry laser-vision.

Quote from: Terry Torpid on April 01, 2024, 02:26:27 PMSimpsons did it.

The Cartridge Family, right? Considered too shocking for UK audiences, so I don't think it was broadcast here at the time, or even in repeats. In fact, it might be only classic era Simpsons episode I've never seen.

madhair60

it was shown on channel 4 but they cut the ending so Marge just puts the gun in the bin then walks out

edit: it also isn't classic era but it's pretty good

lazyhour

Ah, you're right - it's Season 9, aka 'the beginning of the end'.

Stinky Lomax

Honestly, I feel a little squeamish about the idea of an episode where Jerry buys a gun and Elaine keeps pointing it at herself, kind of glad they demurred.

But then I think the series finale is great, so what do I know?

Icehaven

Doesn't one of the neo-nazis pull a gun out in the limousine in The Limo?

Stinky Lomax

They both do. And in The Race, that guy has a starter pistol. And as mentioned earlier there's a dream sequence where Jerry gets shot. Different contexts, different feelings.

NICE LOOKING LUGER

I don't like Newman, but that's just because I don't like the actor very much. I used to watch third rock from the sun as a frustrated teenager and I hated that he got to be with the sexy alien and it made me angry. Infact, I don't even call him Newman because of that, I call him third rock from the sun.

I did like the first appearance of Newman though where you only hear his voice and you can hear that he is clearly voiced by Larry David.

Ha, one of my friends didn't like George Costanza because he hit on Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. :)

Have to say, I can't stand Colin Farrell because the first film I saw him in he chatted to a woman in a shop for a minute and then punched her in the face.

Glad I'm not the only one with a grudge against actors based on their other work.

It goes deeper though. I told my wife about my hatred of Newman and she pointed out that in the famous Sharon Stone scene where she uncrosses her legs, who's in the same room staring straight at the garden of Eden? Third rock from the sun/Newman!

Stinky Lomax

And who gets to live out every kid's dream and play fetch with a dinosaur? NEWMAN!

(Re. disliking actors based on other work: after watching his disgraceful behaviour in Shaun Of The Dead, it took a lot longer to warm up to Bernard in my next rewatch of Black Books.)

madhair60

timely, looks like the script for "The Bet" has just been recovered and is floating around.

madhair60

why did they build up Crazy Joe Davola for all of season 4, then cut away from his "attack" at the end without following up on it at all? did I miss something? Is the joke just that it amounted to absolutely nothing?

I'm taking a break now.

I assume it's because they didn't have the time / money / talent to stage a big attack scene without it looking silly.

Thanks for posting that, it's great. Laughed out loud severals time while reading it, it was like having a brand new episode of Seinfeld in my head. But there is a mean-spiritedness to parts of it that reminded me of the finale, and one thing George said made me wince, here in 2024.

El Unicornio, mang

Yep, thanks for the link. Not only interesting to read a whole new episode but also cool to have the little notes on there to show how they made adjustments here and there.

I can kind of see now why they gave up making it though, it just feels off. I think the quote from Larry Charles about the darkness enveloping the humour rings true.

Only a matter of time before someone AI-generates it.
