Slasher Flicks

It seems there are thousands upon thousands of low-rent often Italian slasher flicks out there and I don't really know where to start.

What are the best slashers, in your opinion? Where do I begin?

I'm happy to watch American examples of the genre but I'm also up for a certain kind of Italo/Euro vibe, though preferably something with cinematographic flair.

For info, I've seen enough of the 90s Hollywood takes on the genre and kind of enjoyed them in a moronic way, but I'd be interested in something a bit artier and maybe sleazier.

Ideally, I'm looking for a genre like Walerian Borowczyk's Dr Jekyll and Miss Osborne which is genuine arthouse but also quite erotic and a little bit demented. Something like that crossed with Suspiria would be amazing.

Any suggestions?

Jess Franco and Jean Rollin would be great places to start on that specific front

more schlocky try Lucio Fulci

Thanks, I've been meaning to try Franco and Rollin for a while but not inclined to buy anything in case they're shite. Seen there's some Rollin on Arrow Player so will try Requiem...

George White

Tourist Trap (1979) - Post-Halloween weirdness about Chuck Connors as a telekinetic wax museum owner who brings his dummies alive, and his disfigured brother.
Eaten Alive (1977) - Tobe Hoope's film after Texas Chainsaw - also about a roadside motel owner (Neville Brand) who keeps a croc in the swimming pool and chases people about with a scythe to feed them.
A Reflection of Fear (1972) - Strange, icy Canadian-ish thriller with Robert Shaw and Sondra Locke as a mental teen.
The Weekend Murders (1970) - Bonkers Italian giallo set in rural England, featuring Chris "Pollard from Emmerdale" Chittell as a. Featuring a dubbed Ballard Berkeley as the butler, Gastone "Don Homer" Moschin as the local PC and Lance Percival as the Scotland Yard inspector.
The Clown at Midnight (1999) - Rather dreary Canadian post-Scream cash-in with Frank the Bunny and Ashley from the Fresh Prince, but with a terrific performance by Christopher Plummer.

I mean they produced quite a lot of films between them so I dare say there's some awful shite out there in the mix but there's some terribly good atmosphere and effective stuff amongst it as well. I've only seen The Grapes of Death from Rollin but can definitely recommend it, for Franco I would put forward A Virgin Among the Living Dead and Succubus.

There's a ton of Rollin on the BFI Player subscription section too if you've got that.

Cheers. I was mistaken, I was thinking of BFI player rather than Arrow. Will finish off my Tsukamoto binge and then resub to BFI.

Arty and porny slashers, hmmmm.............

Yeah, as said, Jean Rollin and Franco are good bets for both of that, if you watch Franco's later ones you'll get the surprise i got where i was all, "hang on, that snake monster lady is actually sucking that guys deenus irl!!!!!", so watch out for some of the stuff being actual hardcore porn, though that's late period stuff. They aren't all slashers and that too btw.

I don't really love either of these two but they've made some good films, like requiem in particular.

Not quite the full on porn or art you are so desperately aching for/wanting to jostle to, but i would furiously demand you watch:

All of Argento's stuff god dammit, from Bird with Crystal Plumage to Stendhal Syndrome inclusive. At least watch *Bird with, *Cat o 9, *4 grey flies, *Tenebrae, *Phenomena and *Terror at the Opera, which will tick all them boxes.

*Blood on Black Lace - First giallo i think, looks like a gorgeous 50s/60s hollywood film, all nice to look at.

Don't torture a duckling - Another early giallos that's a bit arty with lots of jugs and that for you to look at for porn.

*A Bay of Blood - The slasher prototype what got ripped off by the USA men (esp for Friday 13th 2) and has a nice twist. More nice Bava.

*The killer must kill again- lesser know stabbing. A dude comes across a dude dumping a murder body and is all like hang on i've got you with blackmail and stuff, do a murder for me, but all doesn't not go as planned with regards murder dude..............

*Spiders Labyrinth- you probably can't get this, but might be on youtube in dirt quality as i believe only a Japanese vhs exists of it. Dude goes to hungary to find out about why Professor dude has stopped sending messages about the intexus project. Crazy shit happens and there's jugs as points so you'll like that. I love this though the main special effects are a bit bogus. There's all that creeping dread and inescapable fate type business, Lovecraft style. Can send a copy if you like.

What have they done to your Daughters - More Italian murder, i remember this being good but can't remember it lolzzzz.

Here's USA one:

Just before Dawn - a bit like deliverance and that with a crazy ass end that's nice and it looks ok too.

There's some for ye. I've watch about a gillion so i'll probably 'member more in times, it's hard to remember all them films.

*I strongly recommend you watch these ones if you can't be arsed with all o' them. If not i'll message you a picture of my fists.

Many thanks for reading between the lines, champ. They sound very much in the line with my intentions.

oh yeah for some reason i misread your initial post and thought you didn't want any giallos (mainly because you already referenced Suspiria) - but as petercussing says those are terrific for what you're after. blood and black lace definitely a great one. would also maybe recommend:

Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key
The Strange Love of Mrs Wardh
The House of Laughing Windows
Zeder
The Perfume of the Lady in Black
Short Night of Glass Dolls
The Bloodstained Shadow

(not all of these are particularly in the "erotic giallo" vein except those first two by Sergio Martino)

Big Mclargehuge

If we're talking "purebred" slasher and not just exploitation horror with a side helping of gore, then I'll go for:

Black Christmas (1974)
Tourist Trap (1979)
Inferno (1980)
Tenebre (1982)
Pieces (1982)
Sleepaway Camp (1983)
Sledgehammer (1983)
Nail Gun Massacre (1987)
Robot Ninja (1989)
Candyman (1992)

And of course, you can't go wrong with the mainstream slasher movies (pretty much any of the Friday the 13th, Halloween, Childs play films)

The trouble with a lot of Itallian horror films is that it's never just one element of horror. Like, there isn't really a "Pure" itallian slasher. It's always Slasher + something else. Giallo is about as close to pure slashers as itallian cinema goes, but really Giallo predates the "modern" slasher and is generally considered to have inspired the slasher genres creation rather than it being the other way round. Giallo in essence itself was born from the Film Noir genre but with added nudity, gore and violence. Its a fascinating history honestly...

If your looking for Gialo I have you covered!

Blood and Black Lace
Cat o Nine Tails
Deep Red
Don't Torture a Duckling
Night Train Murders
Bloody Moon
The bird with the crystal plumage
The Beyond
House by the cemetery
Absurd
And for a more modern example "Francesca"

The last two men said good things, i endorse their message.

I 'memebred another i think you might like that i recall being good and have indeed just bought to watch this weekend, Stage Fright aka Aquarius. It's about a group of actors who lock themselves in a theatre overnight to practice their play about a murdering owl man but there's a murder man in there with them!!!!!! Overnight!!!!! With them!!!! Sounds underwhelmage but not true actually i'll have you know.

Directed by the man who was a prodigy of Argento and who was also the metal face man in Demon(d)s and a cop in phemonena, among other things, and directed Cemetery Man and La Chiesa, Senor Micky Soavi.

Of what i said before, I think you said you have Phenomena a while ago so watch that next, that's good for your chunk watching ways as long as you do the last 30mins all in one go. That will defo scratch you itch for weird, stylish and murders, there's not really many films like that strange beast. It's kind of like an anime.
