"The story of an irreverent critic in 1970s California who reviews mainstream movies for a porno magazine called The Popstar Pages."

Described by QT himself as "if Travis Bickle was a movie critic" I expect this to be a somewhat muted swansong. I just can't see him doing anything as wonderfully taut as Reservoir Dogs or visually stunning and bonkers as Kill Bill. I found Once Upon a Time in Hollywood exceedingly pointless and boring. This looks like it might be another indulgent yawn-fest building to an ennui inducing violent climax.

I could be wrong. I want to be wrong.

Loved his first 5 (or four if you count Kill Bill as one film) films. There's been excellent scenes in most of his other films since then but The Hateful 8 is the only one I've been engaged start to finish and even that is too long.

I think he still has another great film in him but I suspect this will be watchable with some great scenes but not a classic.

Magnum Valentino

Is that link in the OP the actual source for this?

Good lord no, otherwise I'd be holding out for six Lynne Ramsay films in the next 12-months.

The source is him saying that this will be his final film during a Cannes interview. Unfortunately, the source happens to be Quentin Tarantino so possibly bollocks. But I reckon it to be true, as he has said his final film will include porn magazine journalists which is a subject he loves but has never dramatised.

Goldentony

way too far into Stephen King territory ie writing himself as the main bloke, hopefully this goes the way of Vega Brothers and all his other shit ideas

Johnny Textface

Love me a QT, always brings the event cinema!(I think I've actually seen them all in theatres apart from the proper Grindhouse).

I'll be there with my bag of popcorn, spoiler free and ready for action. This will do big business I expect.

Guessing the intro will have "The last film by Quentin Tarantino" in there whatever it is lol

Broadly agree that editing and writing has got a little loose over the last few.

Operty1

The initial rumour was that he may have attempted a horror movie as his last film, which I prefer the idea of. Though a sleazy Tarantino movie set in the 70s... I can see it. Will the porno mag be for foot fetishists?

Theres no way it'll actually be his final film. He'll have a 9 year hiatus or something and then be back

Petey Pate

Hoping that this is just 2 hours of Gregg Turkington showing off all his popcorn classics on VHS in the Victorville Film Archive.

dissolute ocelot

I don't know the details of his career, but someone should make a Kim Newman movie.

Minami Minegishi

If this heavily features Pauline Kael, as some have suggested, then I think this could be a real winner. He might even do an alternate timeline where Kael kills a few of her most disliked Directors, and changes the future of film and maybe even the career of a lowly videostore worker.

I'm pissing around but this wouldn't surprise me.

But who to play Kael?

She was in her 50s and a bit chubby in the 70s so he'll probably cast Margot Robbie. But I would think Melissa McCarthy would work well. However, this would be perfect for my favourite (and his) Jennifer Jason Leigh who should be cast in everything.

I watched Death Proof again the other week. Good lord, his foot thing is off the scale in that film. If I was an ice cream van driver and saw Quentin Tarantino running out of his doorway licking his lips I wouldn't even need to ask him his order.

Operty1

You could make a small fortune off of him, and get Morricone to do the van jingle.

Agree except not mad about part one of Bill but really love part 2. Everything since has been sort of filler with the odd amazing scene, start of Basterds comes to mind. Hollywood was okay but I couldn't make head nor tail of it.

Pulp Fiction is his magnum octopus imo.

Oh god I forgot about that Kurt Russell muscle car thing. That's the worst thing he's ever done and one of the biggest pieces of shit ever. Wonder if it's worth a rewatch to see if the dialogue is as bad as I remember.

Isn't it meant to be a bit crap? Genuine question. I'm not sure how much of a parody it was intended as.

Is he ever going to do a third Kill Bill? I don't want him to as I think the story's pretty much done, but he was talking about Vernita Green's daughter and BB having to fight each other.

Dr Rock

His final film will be Samuel Jackson Into The Multiverse

dissolute ocelot

He could do a film about John Milius hunting and killing a Roger Ebert-like critic who felt the script for Conan the Barbarian was derivative. Throw in a young Arnold Schwarzenegger getting his ass kicked (like Bruce Lee in the Hollywood movie), Brando still pissed about Apocalypse Now, and a recreation of the making of Spielberg's 1941 (which Milius co-wrote), and you'd have a hell of a chase thriller.

It's supposed to be lurid, trashy and exploitative I'm sure. But Tarantino's strongest suit has traditionally been his dialogue and it's hard to imagine him writing it intentionally badly.

I spose why it didnt work, most of the rest of his career has tended to be taking pulp cinema and Band Aparting it, just making a genuine pulp film not something he's ever done.

Johnny Textface

Deathproof just stinks of a pretty lazy project overall. And the lead actress who does the lapdance just didn't work for me.

Why its probably a good idea he's not followed up any of the other Quentin's mad thoughts.

El Unicornio, mang

I don't mind it but I think it probably works best in the Grindhouse format with the fake trailers between it and Death Proof.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

I reckon this probably will be his final film, he's too hung up on his legacy to renege on the plan of making ten great (tastes may vary) films before bowing out.

He'll probably spend the rest of his life writing books, articles and curating film fests at the New Beverly Cinema. And he'll almost certainly exec-produce the occasional film or two while promoting younger filmmakers he admires.

I think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would've been a perfect swansong, it's one of his best and most heartfelt films, a grand summation of his love for cinema, but maybe The Movie Critic will work as an addendum. I hope so anyway, as I do like old Quent.

Bourgeois Pig Shit List

Last film? OK...does that rule out tv stuff, then?

Critcho

He's said he wants to do a tv show I think, and not just the Bounty Law spin off.

That's why I tend to believe him when he says he wants the next film to be his last. He always said he wanted to have a kid, do some novels, do some criticism, some tv, some stuff for theatre. He's already started doing some of those things and it seems like enough to keep him busy for the next decade or so, and he's 60 already.

I even respect his reasons for doing it - he wants an even catalogue where every film is a winner.

The problem is he botched that plan 15 years ago with Death Proof. I saw it again last week (first time seeing the solo version, I had a Grindhouse bootleg back in the day) and it's really not particularly good. Maybe if both Grindhouse films had been cropped down to 1 hr each it would've worked.

For the sake of his 'perfect legacy' maybe he should've said that one was an anthology bonus film, like Four Rooms, instead of counting as one of the ten.

Not counting Kill Bill vol 2 never made a lot of sense to me either seeing as the combined cut never got a proper release and I'm pretty sure it works better as two films anyway.

He should have quit after Kill Bill Vol. 1 then!

I have a bit of a weird relationship with Tarantino admittedly, I loved Reservoir Dogs when it came out and up until the first Kill Bill I wouldn't say a bad thing about the man, but I struggled with Basterds, Django and Hateful Eight, and the older I get and the more films I see I can't help but think that he's a master thief, able to put together a number of great films which steal ideas (or entire scenes) from other, obscurer movies. His dialogue can be impressive, but I feel he's easily the most overrated director out there, which isn't a popular opinion I know. Sorry.

madhair60

i think Death Proof is pretty alright

i love Kill bill also (sorry)
